They use these in the summer at Canyon de Chelly for tours. They call them "Shake and Bake" since there is virtually no suspension and the people get hot. I followed one for a couple of miles in the Canyon and I was surprised people weren't bouncing out.

Joe,

It's a Unimog. You can see the Unimog specs at:
http://www.umog.com/swiss_specs.htm
And pricing at: http://www.umog.com
My step father was just asking me if this group was a Jeep's only
group because he wanted to get one of these things. They sell them
(if you visit the web site you'll see) in Prescott for $8K.

I don't know look at the turning radius 42', that would be scary.
Also top speed of 59 at 100+db, loud and slow.

Sorry if I'm being retarded here, but removing the t-case drop kit will also
raise the case 1". But neither addresses the original question of driveline

Your engine and tranny are attached to the vehicle at two points....the
motor mounts (up under the engine near the front of the vehicle) and the
tranny mounts, located about in the middle of the skid plate).

If you raisue the motor mounts, the entire engin/tranny pivots on the tranny
mount, causing the output shaft from the t-case to angle down a bit. This
reduced angle can sometimes be enough to compensate for adjustment brought
on by the t-case lowering kit.

So....the angles between your pinion and output shaft come close back to
being parallel and your vibrations are reduced (or eliminated) if all goes
according to plan.

Results can vary from one vehicle to another because, as every knows,
everyone's Jeep is unique (ask the owner, they'll tell you it is). :)

Subject: Re: BL + MM = TC Up

Here's my opinion:

The motor, tranny and t-case are all bolted together into one assembly.
When you install a t-case drop kit, you do two things. First, you tilt
the whole assembly which decreases the u-joint angle at the t-case end
of the rear driveshaft. Second, you lower the t-case yoke which decreases
the difference in height between the t-case yoke and the rear axle pinion
yoke which, in turn, further decreases the u-joint angles in the rear
driveline. Of course, you also lose ground clearance by lowering the
t-case.

If you install a motor mount lift instead of a t-case drop, you get the
benefit of tilting the whole motor/tranny/t-case assembly. But you don't
lower the t-case yoke so you don't get the full advantage of the t-case
drop. (Well, technically, since the pivot point of the tilt is forward
of the t-case yoke, the yoke will swing down a small distance but I think
this is a very small, insignificant amount. And this is true for both
the t-case drop and the motor mount lift.) Of course, you don't lose any
ground clearance either (although you do raise your center of gravity).

So, I would think the motor mount lift would help but not as much as a
t-case drop. If you need a big correction in driveline angles, an SYE
and CV driveshaft may be your best bet. If you only need a small to
moderate correction, then a t-case drop may be appropriate. Small
amounts of correction may accomplished with the motor mount lift.

If anyone sees a flaw in my thinking, please let me know.

I've never seen a 4:1 kit for the 203, but Off Road Design ( I think ) makes
an adapter that allows the low range unit from a 203 to be bolted up to a
NP205 in place of the transmission to transfercase adapter. Essentially
this creates a stacked transfer case with a choice of either 2:1 or 4:1
reduction.

The 203 is exceptionally strong, but it's a bit large for use in a CJ sized
vehicle.

Subject: need input from ~4" range lifted TJ owners

Hi guys,

As I piece my new lift together (brand loyalty is not an issue here), I have
a control arm question or two. First the background details.

I am going with Procomp 4" coil springs (which provide 4" of lift, as
compared to the taller 4" lifts from Tera or RE). I will probably....a bit
further down the road, toss in 1.5" spacers when I opt for bigger tires, but
that is for a different part of the project plans.

A RE SYE equipped t-case with a CD-driveshaft is sitting in the garage,
waiting to go in.

I will be installing RE adjustable rear upper control arms. I plan to keep
the rear stock lower control arms as is. Will this combination present a
problem in adjusting my pinion angle for the CV driveshaft? I am sure that
having adjustable lowers would make things easier, but I am looking at what
I *need* to have, at this time.

The current plan is to also leave the front control arms as is, although I
am wondering if I *need* to change out the uppers and install adjustable
uppers while keeping the stock lowers in place.

In summary, I am trying to determine what are the MUST HAVE control arms for
me to get rolling down the road. Installing others later on is always an
option as the budget allows.

TIA for any helpful comments........Stu

Need more details - especially about how you're comparing height between
your 93 and the 95. The difference in height could be do to any combination
of the any of the following:

- tire size
- body lift
- spring lift
- shackle lift
- spring-over vs spring-under configuration
- spring/shackle mounts
- shackle reversal kit

Subject: oil leaks

In an attempt to control oil leaks on my 86 cj7 (with 258), I'm
planning on replacing the oil pan gasket and re-doing the valve cover
seal.

Two questions:
1. I hear the valve cover originally did not have a gasket, but you
can get one. Is it better to use just permatex ultra blue or the
ultra blue and the gasket? I also heard it's better to let the ultra
blue cure (10-12 hours) before putting the valve cover back on (when
used without the gasket). Any experience on this? I'm trying this
route first, if it doesn't work I'll look at aftermarket valve covers.

2. With the oil pan gasket is it recommended to use sealant with the
gasket? Also, any advice on torque and sequence?

OK, maybe more then 2 questions.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

oops, sorry about the blank one..

Anyhow, whatever you do avoid Pitre Jeep.. They
rebuilt my rear after it blew up (when it was stock)
then I found out later that it was rebuilt wrong and
the pinon was overtightened and spun the bearing
sleeve in the housing (trashing it) also 6 bolts in
the carrier that held the ring gear in place unseated
themselves and came out then sheared off against the
carrier bearing caps, then floated around in there
getting bound up in the gears, which ripped 3 teeth
off the ring gear and destroyed the pinion.

This all happened after having my lift on for a year.
So they blamed it on the lift and voided my warranty
for drivetrain.

I'm such a happy customer of theirs,

Stu,

I hardly a suspension expert, but I think you'll be fine with just the
adjustable UCA's in the rear, especially if you're keeping the stock
t-case skid (not going with a belly-up) and running an SYE and CV-DS.
I've got adjustable upper and lower in the rear and I've only got some
minor vibes due to my belly-up. I hope that the cam bolts I picked up
a couple of weeks ago will take care of that minor problem. (I just
need to find some time to get them in).

I think you might be alright in the front too. I was checking out
Teraflex's web site and it doesn't look like they sell UCA's for the
front with their kits (although, I may be mistaken - but that's what
the picture shows). RE does sell adjustable UCA's for the front with
their kits.

Also, I can't remember for sure, but it seems like the LCA's (they're
the same in front and rear) that are sold with the RE 4.5" kit are a
tad bit longer than the stock arms. They also recommend that you
adjust the new UCA's (front and rear) a tad bit (about an 1/8" or so)
longer than the stock arms. But, if you're running a kit that ends up
at 4" (rather than the RE and Tera kits that might settle at 5"),
you'd probably be OK.

Just try running with what you've got planned. If you have any
driveline vibes, I doubt that they'll be anything severe. If they are,
you can always space down your t-case until you get the funds for a
fix.

Also, if you think you might need some LCA's, I've got an extra pair
of RE arms taking up space in my garage (the non-adjustable kind).
They're brand new and have only seen the light of day when I checked
to make sure they were actually in the box. Let me know and we can
work out a deal on them.

HTH,

Brent

Dion,
While hammers, chisels, air hammers and fire will all work, I prefer a
less "abusive" style. To remove mine I got a 7/16" diameter 12" long piece
of "all thread" from Ace Hardware with two appropriate size washers and
nuts, I put a socket that was the same size as the sleeve on one side of the
all thread and put it through the sleeve then put a larger one on the other
side, with the washers and nuts on the outside I just used a couple of
wrenches and pressed the sleeves out. No muss, no fuss.

Ok here is the nuts and bolts.

Steve has a 94 YJ with a D35c and I have a 97 TJ with a D35c. I have a
Lockrite locker for mine and he wants a Lockrite locker for his.

Will the 97 fit in the 94?

Subject: RE: Mod Friendly Jeep Dealer List

I have had multiple warrantee claims at Glendale Automotive (was Biddulph).
They have never once questioned that my vehicle was lifted, had after market
axles, diffs, etc. Most of the claims were resolved by fixing or tightening
something in the driveline/suspension system. (none of them were any items
that I replaced or did a mod on). For that, I am very thankful.

However, they almost never put the vehicle back together
properly/completely. I have found switches, screws, brackets, etc. laying
on the floor boards, stuck in the glove box, etc. Each time, I go back to
the service manager (I have learned now to completely inspect my vehicle
before leaving the lot) and discuss the problems. Given that this has
continued to occur over a multi-year period (I just went out of warrantee on
my TJ, so I hope I never have to go back), I can tell you that they don't
learn from the mistakes. Their 5 start dealership rating is a complete
joke, IMO.

My last visit ended in grease all over the driver's side floor area (that
does not include the part of the dash assembly that was not put back
together properly). The service manager and I had a long talk about that
one. He told me that it was just amazing that this problem could somehow
make it past 3 inspections, all done by different people. He did not seem
very receptive to the suggestions I gave him concerning the long term
employment opportunities for his employees. (Now I know why AZ has such a
low unemployment rate!)

In summary.....the dealership does not mind lifted vehicles (they sell them
off the front lot with 3" lifts)....and you shouldn't mind an incomplete job
when you're ready to drive it home. :)

Subject: Re: oil leaks

I've got a Chevy motor. If it quits leaking, then I need to add more
oil!! ;-)

Seriously......Some have good success putting the gaskets onto a 258
without gasket maker. I always did mine with gasket maker and a gasket
and STILL had some leaks. I attribute this to my lack of patience and
attention to detail. But NOW I have a Chevy 350! Can't get anything to
seal on that sucker. Oil pan gasket is a 4 piece job that never seals.
Valve cover has 4 bolts to seal an entire cover!!!! No chance there! I'm
interjecting sarcasm, but the problems are real.

This is one of those questions where if you ask 4 people you'll get 6
different answers. I am aware of people who do it without any gasket
maker and use only a gasket on a 258 and have good success. I am also
aware of poeple who use both at the same time and have success. I guess
you pretty much get to decide for yourself.

I will add this.....when I replaced my wife's transmission pan filter on
her 1998 XJ (automatic), the oil pan had been sealed both with a rubber
gasket and with a pink gasket maker added. Now....transmission fluid is
much more viscous and costic, but this is how the factory did it!

Wow!! Wish I had thought of that. But that is why I love this list so much.
Very elegant and effective!
