Outside of C6 in Chandler looking like a homicidal VW bus on PCP, a
Pinzgaur (probably 710M). Looked just like this:

Way cool.

Portal axles, softop, the works.
Looked like about 1" of suspension travel though.

Subject: XJ 3" Skyjacker lift

Hey there,
just finished installing a 3" Skyjacker lift in my 87' XJ ( about 6:00pm and its stopped snowing! ), took it out on US 60 ( between Show Low and Springerville) and I am getting a little vibration from the rear when I stand on it from a dead stop,( goes away about 45mph or so ) otherwise it feels good all the way up to 75mph. Anybody have any ideas, should I go ahead and get the TC lowering kit or the slip yoke eleminator or upgraded drive shaft or just live with it and see if when the new leaf springs settle in a little it goes away? Im pretty new at this, and would appreciate some thoughts from some of you who have lived with a lift in your XJs for a while. Also I am trying to decide on some ( strictly off road ) tires , My "Thing" is playing in the snow, but of course most of you guys are desert rats,( I was too for about 30 years) I don't see much in the off road magazines or AZVJC or anywhere else for that matter , about good SNOW and mud tires, everybody talks about rocks and sand. Anyway, any thoughts or ideas would be welcome!
P.S. if some of you want to play in the snow , give me a holler, I live in the national forest and try to spend at least two days a week in the woods jeepin. Doc

Subject: Re: DISCOUNT TIRE VS. ANY BODY

I respectfully disagree. Since Discount Tire got in the "big to do"
with BF Goodrich for selling AT's at below cost (or whatever the case
was). You can get prices from Big O, Walmart & Price Club, these I
know for sure, at below what Discount Tire sells their tires for. As
a consumer I love the idea of getting the best price around and have
used Discount Tire's tires on my vehicles from 1978 to 1998 (20
years). But, I loathe the idea of calling around making somebody
believe me that I can get cheaper tires at another store. I feel it
is not up to me to check everybody's prices but, like I said, since
the thing with BF Goodrich I have had to do it. I realize it is not
your fault you cannot price a tire for less than you get it for but,
you can cut the cost on balancing, road hazard, and other services.
I will give you the chance next time, I won't report what
everybodyelse is selling them for, I am not your marketing firm.

Sincerely,

James Towle

want people to take you seriously.)

Joe,

It's a Unimog. You can see the Unimog specs at:
http://www.umog.com/swiss_specs.htm
And pricing at: http://www.umog.com
My step father was just asking me if this group was a Jeep's only
group because he wanted to get one of these things. They sell them
(if you visit the web site you'll see) in Prescott for $8K.

I don't know look at the turning radius 42', that would be scary.
Also top speed of 59 at 100+db, loud and slow.

There's been a bit of a buzz about putting Unimog axles under Jeeps

Reply to: Getting main eye bushings out?
Howdy: Anyone got tips on getting main eye bushings out of stock Wrangler leaf spring packs? Building my packs for SOA and picked up some greaseable main eye bushings today, but can't get the bloody old ones out. So far I've made copious use of the BFH, screwdriver, penetrating oil and more BFH to little gain.

Help?

Also, anyone have a source, online, local, whatever, for good pricing on Rancho RS9000 shocks? Thanks for any help.

Hey all --

I'm trading in my '98 XJ and have a few parts that you may be
interested in. I have an ARB bull bumper (winch model) installed
that I'm willing to sell for $350 (was $600 new) if someone has an
unscratched black stock front XJ bumper (97+ bodystyle) I can install
in it's place. I've also got a Tomken swing-away tire carrier rear
bumper that I will sell for $150 (I still have the original bumper).

Only catch is that if someone is interested, I need to do the deal
VERY quickly as I am will be trading in my XJ and don't want to wait
until the weekend to do this. I thought I'd toss this to the group
so that I could get some return on the $$ I spent on these bumpers,
but if not then they go with the tradein.

If interested please email me (jeffm @ desertwave.com) or call me at

In the mags they burn those suckers out most of the time but I
believe that taking a good sized drill bit to them all around the
metal center piece works also.

Subject: Re: pitman arms

My stock pitman arm measured about 6-9/16" from center to center. It is
off of an '83 CJ7 with power steering.

As for not liking the dropped pitman arm. There are two big reasons.
First, my turning radius was GREATLY increased when I went to the arm.
After closer inspection, I found that the center to center on the
dropped arm is actually shorter than the one that came stock. I did a
lot of searching and measuring and found that all of the dropped pitman
arms for my vehicle (sold by various manufacturers) are shorter
center-to-center than the stock one. Why......I don't know. Second,
the dropped pitman arm puts more stress on the steering box due to the
4" of extra lever arm. I like how it brings my drag link back into
"closer" alignment with my tie rod (bump steer improvement), but the
turning radius issue is a real hinderance. I'm working on a bent drag
link of some sort so as to try to get back to the stock arm. I'm SOA,
so the springs are in the way. That's why I'm having problems. I guess
some day I'll wise up, swap in a D44 with flat top knuckles, and go to
the high clearance steering thing. But until I get some $$, I'm stuck
with the dropped arm or the bent drag link. ;-(

10 degrees but you can run up as much as 14. I would only lower the

Oops, I replied, but in email to James.

To everyone else who thinks this is a unimog: it ain't.

It is a Pinzgauer (that is the correct spelling).

It is superficially similar but is smaller, goes faster on the
highway, doesn't have the extreme low gearing of the 'mog, started
production decades after the unimog, and is made by a different
company than the unimog. It has geared hub and offset axles, but in
some kind of independent suspension setup. Technically I don't know if
this counts as portal axles, but it is similar. It has manual lockers
front and rear. it has a 45 degree aproach and departure angle, and
can handle a 40 degree sidehill. It lacks in the suspension travel
department, though.

I've seen quite a few unimogs; they are rare but around. I suspect
that the Pinz' is a lot rarer as this is the first for me.

Jame's reference site (http://www.umog.com/) has stuff about both.
