Where can I pick up about 8" of 2"x2" square stock? Need to make
some new mounting towers for my KC's since I cut my bumper down to
the frame.
TIA

Subject: [TR] Trip Report - Box Canyon - Sunday, January 21, 2001
Hello All,
This is an automated message from the website, please do not reply to it!
Ray B. lead a trail run Sunday, January 21, 2001 across Box Canyon
Well, Since this is my first time as a trip leader,
please forgive me if this isn't the best trip report!!
Most of the group metup at Texaco, then came down to
the turnoff for box canyon. We started with 9 jeeps (sorry,
but I can't remember names and jeeps, and I didn't write
anything down!!). We all aired down there and began the
trip at about 10:00. The run thru the canyon was un-
eventful...Everyone seemed to enjoy the scenery, and the
mild obstacles. There was some water in the canyon, but
for those who wanted it...there was more to come later!!
We stopped at the end of box-canyon, and talked/ stretched
and got to know each other a bit. Three more jeeps showed
up there, but didn't stay with us for long (think they were
looking for one of the other groups).
After a bit of chatting, we got running again and
headed for the Coke ovens trail. After a brief side trip
(I was having directional dislexia) we got on the right
track and the fun began. One of the jeeps was experiencing
a bit of carb. trouble, and it did NOT like anything other
than level ground (and resonable speeds it seems), so we
had some fun watching him climb (repeatedly) the first
'step' at the "stair steps" obstacle early in the trail.
Once he got over that spot, all of the group got together
on a fairly long straight stretch of trail just above the
steps and had lunch. Durring lunch, a group of dirt-bikes
wove thru the group of jeeps (the went fairly slow, and
didn't throw a bunch of rocks) I think all told we saw bikes
about 5 times during the day.
When lunch was over (the high point of which was
watching Ryan ('51 willy's) cook on the top of his engine)
we all started up again. On the descent from the first hill
one of the newer, stocker jeeps found a couple of holes
that were spaced the same as his wheel-base, and discovered
that the front diff. makes a good parking brake on a hill.
With a bit of insight, one of the group came up with a
novel way of getting him out of his tight spot...DRIVE!!
By turning the wheels and stuffing a few rocks, he was on
his way again...ON to the coke-ovens.
The scenery from the tops of the hills was great!!
the climbs were challenging enough to be fun, but easy
enough to not tax anyones abilities. After several ups-
and-downs, we were finally at the coke ovens (about 2:00ish)
and everyone oohd and aahd about them, and the area. It
was at this point that a Jeep ???(full sized thing) caught
up with us. He commented about how fast it looked like we
were going until he caught us. I'm sorry I don't remember
his name, but I gave him our web address, and my email so
he could join the group (he expressed alot of interest).
The new jeep'ers decided to follow us out (he also got to
close all of the gates THANK-YOU).
This brings us to the extra water I mentioned earlier.
Having spoken to a 'quad' rider earlier, we had decided to
try to cross the river instead of backtracking. He told me
that the river was less than a foot deep, and there was
SOME water in the ruts along the fenceline leading to the
river. That SOME water turned out to be quit a bit (my co-
driver was looking for her snorkle as water lapped at the
door sills) and unfortunately, a couple of full-sized
trucks were stopped about half way thru the substantial mud
holes. We all discovered that we were just passengers as
there was NO way we could go any direction other than the
ruts took us. After a short stop (trucks in the way, and
my jeep stalled) we started running again. We followed
(??? lead) the fullsize trucks out...they had to back-up
all the way (they both decided having seen OUR progress
thru the water that they were NOT going that way!!) and
all met up on a sandbar near the river.
While stopped at the river, my codriver (Amanda) found
out the boundless humor of a bunch of muddy jeepers, and
attained the coveted position of Joke subject. Amanda had
taken on almost as much water as the jeep and therefore was
a great subject for comment. :-) I'm sure she will be on
many runs in the future (((thanks for the warm welcome
gang!!))). On our way again, we took what the group thought
was another detour. We did a u-turn on a sandbar just past
our turn a bit...actually what I was doing was counting to
make sure everyone was still with us! (do you believe me??)
We crossed the river repeatedly, crossed the RR tracks, and
stopped by an old rock building for a round-up, and quick
chat with some more 'quad' riders. Out the fence, up the
wash, and onto the dirt road out.
We all stopped at the corner of the Florence/ Kelvin
highway at hwy 79 for a final meet. A lot of positive comments
were floating around which made me feel real good about
this run. After a fuel-up stop and some air at Chevron in
Florence with a few of the group, we all went our own ways.
I have to thank again the jeepers that helped me to
navigate. And I want to thank all the participants in our
run for a GREAT day. You all make jeeping worth while!!
If I missed anything, or left out something I didn't see,
pleas post it for all.
Thanks!!!

Are you saying that the tires don't grip well side-to-side like when
you're in an off-camber situation? Or that they don't grab well when
riding on the sidewalls? If the latter, do you think it's because the
sidewalls are too stiff an don't wrap around rocks/ledges or something
else?
I'd like to hear comments from others in addition to Dion.

I have a set of goodyear mtrs and have been running them for along time not only do I find that the wet onroad traction is superb but the trail traction is amazing I can;t believe the way the tires do stick on the table mesa trails where most of the rock you encounter is sandstone they totally rock but when you get into washed that are hard granite they leave a little to be desired but only when they are wet you go nice and easy on the gas and the tires will grip. The have put me into bad spots gripping when I expected them not to
it all depends your driving style and what your tires are trying to grab. water or sand always changes everything dry trails you run you may walk with any tire then you throw in mud and water now your fighting to get over everything.
What I really wanna say is I love my mtr's I have never run swampers would like to try them but for my rig being my daily driver I will not get any tires other than mtr's

Subject: D60 Rear For my YJ Questions
I am acquiring a Dana 60 rear from a friend, here is the deal for the
front, I was thinking that I would go with a ford front, mainly
because the pumpkin is on the Left side, So I could keep my NP207 for
the Mean time, I would look for like a 79 f250 I think that they have
the Sixty front, But that is probably not necessary, even a fourty
four would be more than I would need, But if I were to go with a
Chevy and have the diff on the right, what are any suggestions as to
what tranny and t-case I should use(Besides the Atlas) to expensive
right now, my wife and I just had a Baby. here is what I was thinking.
I get a tranny and t-case out of an early to mid eighties Jeep CJ-7
they have the Dana 300 if i am not mistaken, and would bolt right up
to the motor in my jeep, and the shaft drops on passenger side. Then,
later I could just go with a tera-Low (Cheaper than Atlas),SOA,35's
with 4.56 gears. And does anybody know if Fullwidth axles on a YJ are
street legal in AZ, Or what I would need to keep it within the limits.
I wonder because I see all of these poor jeeps in tucson with
wheelspacers and 16 inch wide rims and like the entire wheel and tire
are sticking out almost 2 feet from the Jeep. Oh yeah, anybody know
of any shops that do custom backspacing on wheels. and Can that
center part in the rim where the HUbs are on Chevy front axles, be
shortened so that it does not stick out so far.

Subject: TJ owners: does Body Lift + Motor Mount = TC Up?
I've been doing some research, and have read a few writeups on people
combining a 1" body lift w/ a 1" motor mount lift in order to raise
the stock transfer case skid plate on a TJ back up to its original
location after a suspension lift. Obvoiusly cheaper than doing a
SYE/driveshaft (but you wouldn't get the strength etc), but I'm not
sure if it will do the job safely and or without damage to the
drivetrain.
Has anyone done this?

I'm running MT/Rs. Ross emailed me and said he has noticed this on mine as well. I think he means that the MT/R sidewalls don't grip as well. That makes sense since the sidewall tread is not as aggressive.
Ross, can you give more details? I may switch to the SX's next time around if this is a big issue.

Dan....I have done this, but it is NOT a replacement for when you *need* a
SYE. I was able to get rid of my t-case 1" drop kit when I did mine. I was
running a Tera 2T lift at the time.
If you are doing a 3" or better lift, it will not get rid of the rear
driveshaft vibrations that the lift will introduce.

Subject: Re: TJ owners: does Body Lift + Motor Mount = TC Up?
the whole reason for the 1" body and engine lift is to place the transfer
case skid flush to the frame rails so you gain about 4" of ground clearance
the reason for the sye is the length of your stock driveshaft will cause
sever vibration in most cases at that angle (if you left the tcase in stock
location with lift) the sye shortens the rear output shaft on the tcase
makeing the rear shaft longer and cutting down on driveshaft angle which
takes care of the vibrations caused by lifting I am about to do an sye on my
jeep and will be posting an article on WWW.ALLOFFROAD.COM also I am going to
gloeco (arizona driveline) to get the new rear drive shaft needed after
doing the slip yoke eliminator I will also be doing an article on the custom
built rockcrawler shafts from gloeco.

Subject: TJ Cat Convertor
Have any of you with TJ's every had a problem with the Catalytic
convertors? I have seen some post, other places, about the baffles
going out (vibrating). I am getting this wierd vibration on hard
accelerations, it sounds like the muffler is loose. I have checked
around the exhaust system and everything seems to be tight.
I guess the main concern with taking it to the dealer is two fold,
one, I don't have the time too be without it and two, I have a 2-1/2"
Cat back system on it.
Any input would be appreciated.

I just wanted to thank Tim ( Barney ) for taking the lead on

helpful and I would enjoy doing any run with any of you guys.
As far as the run went Things were going pretty smooth until
Tim bent his tie rod climbing this huge rock (fortunatly Rick had a
spare)so while some made repairs the others took the opportunity for
lunch. We then made our way to Highway to Hell ( after 2 flat tires )
where Tim and Rick decided to take it a little farther. My nephew

you guys for making it a successful and enjoyable run. hope to see

I would not have brought it up if it had not been so prononced. Here is a desription of what I have seen. On dry hard rocks with angled surfaces left or right I consistantly have seen them slide rapidly away from the angle (PSI about 9-10). I don't think it was on the side wall. It was very drastic and it was on several Jeeps. Not sure why and I am buying them for my Dodge 4X4 so I am not totally against them. Again, it was a drastic movement on more then one rig and on several trails. There is no perfect tire and each has its issues, I was just wondering if it was just me because I modified how I spotted those rigs. I agree on the wet stuff, they really stick when wet but not muddy.

33-12.50-15's they also work well as far as sidewall traktion
they do grip well,we did upper woodpecker yesterday and about
2/3 through you come across a rock mound you can go over the
high side or take the low side.the low side takes alot of
hits from rear corners but i went up and turned in to the wall
and used the sidewall to clim the side of the wall over the hit
spot with the good spoting from rick norman no body damage!!

Thanks!!!

Hello, I am sorry if this email is going to sound repetitve, but I
ordered a AZVJC from the AZ Cap Co on 1/5/01. The problem is I live
in WA and when I called AZ Cap Co. to find out if my shirt had been
shipped yet, the gentleman said my shirt was delivered to Glenn
Davis.
Glenn, I tried to find your email address from the AZVJC website but
couldnt find it, so I appologize for sending this to everyone. Can
you please let me know if you need further information besides what I
provided to AZ Cap Co. to send it to me? Thank you!!

I've been doing some research, and have read a few writeups on people
combining a 1" body lift w/ a 1" motor mount lift in order to raise
the stock transfer case skid plate on a TJ back up to its original
location after a suspension lift. Obvoiusly cheaper than doing a
SYE/driveshaft (but you wouldn't get the strength etc), but I'm not
sure if it will do the job safely and or without damage to the
drivetrain.

If you are doing a 3" or better lift, it will not get rid of the rear
driveshaft vibrations that the lift will introduce.

the whole reason for the 1" body and engine lift is to place the transfer
case skid flush to the frame rails so you gain about 4" of ground clearance
the reason for the sye is the length of your stock driveshaft will cause
sever vibration in most cases at that angle (if you left the tcase in stock
location with lift) the sye shortens the rear output shaft on the tcase
makeing the rear shaft longer and cutting down on driveshaft angle which
takes care of the vibrations caused by lifting I am about to do an sye on my
jeep and will be posting an article on WWW.ALLOFFROAD.COM also I am going to
gloeco (arizona driveline) to get the new rear drive shaft needed after
doing the slip yoke eliminator I will also be doing an article on the custom
built rockcrawler shafts from gloeco.

I guess the main concern with taking it to the dealer is two fold,

HI ALL
Randy here, the goodyears are a nice tire i know a few that are
running them and they work well but i run the pro comps in
33-12.50-15's they also work well as far as sidewall traktion
they do grip well,we did upper woodpecker yesterday and about
2/3 through you come across a rock mound you can go over the
high side or take the low side.the low side takes alot of
hits from rear corners but i went up and turned in to the wall
and used the sidewall to clim the side of the wall over the hit
spot with the good spoting from rick norman no body damage!!
i love my pro comp mt's
