Subject: [TR] Trip Report - Axle Alley - Saturday, January 20, 2001
Hello All,
This is an automated message from the website, please do not reply to it!
Ross Skinner lead a trail run Saturday, January 20, 2001 across Axle Alley
Well, this was a fun day. We started at the Cotton Rd turn off at 8am Sat. We ended up with eight rigs...not six ;-), but it worked out.. One CJ7, One YJ, Two CJ5's, One ZJ, Three TJ's. The flag was not up for the range. We drove up to the camp ground and unloaded. We were going to the trail by 8:50 or so.
Chuck and Pete took tail and we had a couple people going to watch also. I had not been through the trail before but Ken and Tim had walked it. We started up the wash and I came around a corner and found the first obstacle, a 8 plus foot very vertical wall. It is a very even surface but it is straight up. I locked the front and basically went up until my very expensive tire carrier :-) was buried in the sand. I was as close to vertical as I have been. Ken and my son Chris hooked my winch up to an anchor point left in the hillside. Thanks to whoever put it there. The other options would really stress the springs while going up. I got the old stock carb running, barely, and went up and over with the winch. Everyone made it up this wall with no problem, we worked together and nothing broke. We made it through in about an hour and a half. Tom Le really did great with his ZJ.
We then went through some more narrow wash with some well-placed diff whackers. Just a quick note, I would not mention this if I really did not think it was important. The guys that had the new Goodyear tires experienced some strange behavior. The tires would not hold side to side. Tims front end slid/jumped to the side off of a couple of rocks and could have bent his axel tube easily. Don't want to put anyones stuff or choices down but we all saw this several times and just wanted to mention it. The rocks were dry but a bit slick. I think the locker contributed to the slide but this was way beyond normal. We made great time and made it to the second waterfall towards the end of the trail. This one is not as tall (7') and not as vertical. I almost got my tires over the top but was just short. I winched off a small tree and went up. The cool part on this obstacle was that Tom with his ZJ was able to go up without a winch. His extra length was all he needed. Then we hit the end of the trail and again thanks to the winch point I drove up to a big ledge and then winched over. Everyone made it up okay. Chuck did a good job considering he did not have a front locker yet; his new lift seemed to work well. This is a 35" trail, winch required.
It was a beautiful day, flowers were out and the views were great. A good group of people and lots of fun. I only have a couple of pictures but Tim should have a bunch. We will get them up soon.

Sounds like a great trip. Wish I could have come along. We went to the
military vehicle show on Saturday for a few hours. The ZJ engine
compartment is half torn apart so that we can install an on-board air
compressor. The work is going very smoothly.

Last night I had pretty much decided to buy a nice CJ to replace my stolen
XJ...but then this morning I got a call and found out that there is an 88YJ
with 4.2L, auto, and 42k miles on it for sale for $8000.
Would I be better off going with the YJ or going with something like an
83CJ7 with stock 6cyl, auto, and in the range of 80k-100k miles for less
money but still good condition?

Ross,
I've never had any problems with lateral traction with my MT/R's, you've seen that yourself. The maximum PSI I run on rocks is 10. If the back end is heavily loaded I MIGHT go up to 11-12 psi as long as it appears to have the same size footprint as up front. Any more pressure than 10 psi on a normally loaded short wheelbase rig and you don't really experience the performance these tires offer. I'm also running 15x10" wheels.

For about two weeks I've seen a very clean white 2 door XJ for sale off the side of the road near 7th St and Bethany Home. I noticed it has a diff up front so its definitely 4WD. Doesn't appear to have ever been offroaded. Price on the window is $5000.
Might be worth checking out...

expensive, but way worth it, sound clear and very strong.
My 2 cents...

In my last email I vented about the leaderless runs, but failed to thank a few people who made for a great day:
1. Glen Davis - many thanks for the great t-shirts. They look spectacular! If you didn't get yours contact Glen to make arrangements to pick them up. If you didn't order any, you can do so on our web site and pay shipping to your door.
2. Larry Turnquist for being the only leader to show at Texaco. Doug actually led Ajax because we wanted to do upper and lower Ajax and Larry hadn't done Upper. Great lead, Doug. I had a wonderful time, especially on Upper.
I hope everyone else managed to have as good a time as the 22 Jeeps who started out for Ajax. Christi put on a rock climbing show on a couple of obstacles on upper and it was a wonderful thing to see.

Being VERY new to jeepin and only a club member since Friday, all the help and tips were GREATLY appreciated. I would have gone on the Coke Oven run, but couldn't disconnect my sway bar, and didn't want to risk my daily driver.
Speaking of that, can anybody recommend a good place to get sway bar link quick-disconnects for a decent price here in the valley?
Thanks again for the warm reception, and I look foward to actually running a trail with you guys in the nearest possible future!!

To add my two sense, I would vote for a good Uniden that suits your needs.
Uniden built Cobra radios for Cobra until a few years ago (maybe 6). After
spending 2 and a half years on the interstates driving a big rig, everything
I have heard and personally experienced points toward Uniden being the best
bang for the buck.

Subject: Re: t-shirt runs again
Just a quick note to echo my thanks for the trail lead today. HUGE
outing (possible too big...spotting 20 Jeeps over an obstacle can
make for a long day). We had a great time as always. As far as the
shirt delivery for those that didn't make it, we'll set up something
this week. I have about 15 shirts that are paid for and sitting in
my garage. As far as me mailing them to you, sorry but no. I'm not
in the T-Shirt biz, nor the mailing biz. I hope it doesn't sound
selfish, but I arranged this out of the tiny bit of goodness in my
heart. I make no $$ on the deal. in fact, I lost a few bucks on
them. Not whining. I'm very glad to have done it, but can't (OK,
maybe won't) do individual delivery. As I have posted b4, I live in
teh far NE valley (Tatum/Jomax) and work at I-10 and Elliot so we can
make arrangements at either location. Email me off line and let me
know your preference. Thanks for the thanks I've received here and
by email. I'm glad it worked out for the members that picked up over
40 shirts today. I'm looking forward to seeing you on the next run.

Might be worth checking out...

I would just like to say thanks to everybody I met today at the air-down spot. I will defenitely be back for the next run I can. I was very encouraged by the warm welcome I received.

Well, sorry about the leaderless runs. I tried hard to get the leaders to all show up at the Texaco station, but... Well, the Woodpecker group had a good time anyway. I don't know what happened with the Coke Ovens group. I hope you all met up with Ray and had a good run, or at least one of you knew the route and led you himself. If not, sorry. That is the last time I will organize a run like that without committed run leaders.
