Don't know about the 2.5L switching to TBI but according to
http://www.jeeptech.com the 4.0L was installed in 1990.

Mre Reasearch at www.jeeptech.com says the 2.5L TBI was first used in
87. Then again the section the engines says the 4.0 was started in the
wrangler in 91.

I have a 90YJ it had a carb. Up to 90 the YJ had 4.2L with a carb. 91 and
above had 4.0 with MPI. I have seen some 90 YJ's listed in the paper with
the 4.0L engine. I am not sure if this is a misprint or that year was
mixed. I have never seen a 90 with a 4.0L in person.

I just reported what jeeptech had. Under the Wrangler section they said
the 90 had the 4.0 but under the engine section they said 91 was the
first year. Knowing Chrysler they could both be correct as Chrysler has
been know to do mid year changes. Regardless 91 and up had 4.0L motors.

Hi all,
Having just read the story in 4W&SU on page 96, "What's is a name?", I
have several questions.
I noticed where they are driving the doesn't appear to be an
established road. I thought going across country was a no-no. Who do you
contact at BLM or the State to find out if this is ok?
I have an area that is part state and part BLM land that looks like
Moab!
It sure looks better that the Travis trail, but there are no established
trails into this neat area, but there is a flagstone quarry there.
Any Ideas would be appreciated.

Well, I didnt have the patience to wait for a reply, so I went ahead and installed the 260-x in the driveshaft. It went in real smooth. I assume that if it was the wrong one, it wouldnt have fit. I am going to put the driveshaft back in and test drive. Thanks Doug!

They will be different. The axle joints should be 260's and the d/s may be 1310's, though I'm not certain of this on the XJ.

Subject: Re: My Custom Long Arm - Rear Is Half Done
The arms are the existing RE super flex arms cut in half. They are
1.5" .120 wall. I then used a .120 wall 1.25" chromoly rod down the
center from end to end and used a center section of 1.5" .120 wall
chromoly to spreak it. The sleeve is welded in as well as the butt
joints welded. The TIG welder who did it said that these are even
overkill for a full size truck and if I ever break them I he doesn't
think my Jeep will be running anymore anyway. I made up the design
and gave it to him to weld. The upper arms will come down to a
bracket on the lower arm (2 axle mounts, 1 frame mount per arm).
This is how RE does their front arms in their long arm kit. I am
definitely doing my fronts this way but in the rear I may do a three
link setup. If I don't do the three link then I'll do radius arms in
the rear also. I have to do front and rear one at a time since I
only have one spare set of longer lower control arms (by longer I
mean longer than stock) so that I don't have to reset my pinion
angles and stuff. I will be taking the front RE super flex arms out
tomorrow and cutting them in half, I already have the sleeve and
spacer for them and it will get welded Monday or Tuesday.

It looked like a Jeep could get through ok (we were alone so we didn't try). We climbed up on one of the big rocks there and beyond the narrow spot was a clear area and more narrow canyon. Beyond that were some serious rock obstacles but it looked passable. This is the upper end of Lower Sycamore. Has anyone gone through there? Does it go all the way through to Upper Sycamore in the creek? Except for the thousand or so quads, it was gorgeous back there today. I would like to try that area when the water drops a bit. There's a road into the area, and you can get to the quarry, but that
road is just a road. The area I am talking about is on SR 377 between
Heber and Holbrook. The area is call "Pink Cliffs" and is just north of
the dry lake area.If you look at a area map its checkerboarded with one
section BLM and the next State land. This area has sink holes and some
neat cracks in the flagstone. Some of the cracks are a foot or so wide
and run for a 100 yards. Has anyone been in this area? There is a hugh
sinkhole in the cliff with a dry lake in the bottom surrounded by
flagstone or red rock.

I've found that if you get to know someone in the salvage business, I.E.
become a regular customer, they will not take advantage of you. Of course,
it helps to have the right personality. If you can send them business, and

The are some BLM areas in Arizona where cross country travel is allowed.
Cross country travel is NOT ALLOWED on Az State Trust Land, National
Forest, National Park, National Monument, National Wildlife Refuge,
Wilderness areas of all designations, Indian Reservations, Military
Reservarations, State Parks. Did I leave anything out?
I am sure the same rules hold true in any other state.
Additionally, just because there was a road doesn't mean that it is
still open to travel. You gotta know where you are!
I hope this doesn't sound like there are no new areas to 4-wheel or no
new trails to "open" in Arizona. Recall that the BLM does consider most
(not all) washes legitimate travel routes for motorized vehicles, but
there are rules for these too depending on the district.
If you want to see damage caused by cross country travel, go out to the
Rolls OHV Area on the north side of Saquaro Lake.
Hope this helps,

Subject: Axel Alley Run
Well, this was a fun day. We started at the Cotton Rd turn off at 8am Sat.
We ended up with eight rigs...not six ;-), but it worked out.. One CJ7, One
YJ, Two CJ5's, One ZJ, Three TJ's. The flag was not up for the range. We
drove up to the camp ground and unloaded. We were going to the trail by
8:50 or so.
Chuck and Pete took tail and we had a couple people going to watch also. I
had not been through the trail before but Ken and Tim had walked it. We
started up the wash and I came around a corner and found the first obstacle,
a 8 plus foot very vertical wall. It is a very even surface but it is
straight up. I locked the front and basically went up until my very
expensive tire carrier :-) was buried in the sand. I was as close to
vertical as I have been. Ken and my son Chris hooked my winch up to an
anchor point left in the hillside. Thanks to whoever put it there. The other
options would really stress the springs while going up. I got the old stock
carb running, barely, and went up and over with the winch. Everyone made it
up this wall with no problem, we worked together and nothing broke. We
made it through in about an hour and a half. Tom Le really did great with
his ZJ.
We then went through some more narrow wash with some well-placed diff
whackers. Just a quick note, I would not mention this if I really did not
think it was important. The guys that had the new Goodyear tires experienced
some strange behavior. The tires would not hold side to side. Tims front end
slid/jumped to the side off of a couple of rocks and could have bent his
axel tube easily. Don't want to put anyone's stuff or choices down but we
all saw this several times and just wanted to mention it. The rocks were dry
but a bit slick. I think the locker contributed to the slide but this was
way beyond normal. We made great time and made it to the second waterfall
towards the end of the trail. This one is not as tall (7') and not as
vertical. I almost got my tires over the top but was just short. I winched
off a small tree and went up. The cool part on this obstacle was that Tom
with his ZJ was able to go up without a winch. His extra length was all he
needed. Then we hit the end of the trail and again thanks to the winch point
I drove up to a big ledge and then winched over. Everyone made it up okay.
Chuck did a good job considering he did not have a front locker yet; his new
lift seemed to work well. This is a 35" trail, winch required.
It was a beautiful day, flowers were out and the views were great. A good
group of people and lots of fun. I only have a couple of pictures but Tim
should have a bunch. We will get them up soon.

Brice and I went down to Lower Sycamore Creek today to stretch a winch cable. We went North down the creek until we came to a narrow spot with about 3' of water. I was a bit nervous about possible quick sand.

If you can send them business, and
have those people mention your name, that helps too.

Don't know how many of you are going to get this, but as the trail
leader for box-canyon/ coke ovens, I thought I should let everyone on
those runs know that I will meet you at the 'air down' spot just off the
highway at the turn-off for box canyon. FWIW, Ryan will be waiting with
me.
See ya'll there!!

Hope this helps,
Linda
