twstdtj
09-26-2005, 08:07 AM
This will be the first in a series of workshops.
This session will cover basic trail repairs including front axle shaft/u-joint replacement, rear axle replacemnet (both c-clip and standard axles) trail steering fixes/repairs, tire repair / reseating, creative uses for a high lift and any other topics that may be brought up. This will be an open forum and questions will be answered as we go. If anyone would like any content added let me know.
Trail Repair 101 will take place On October 30th (Sun) at Performance Offroad 3110 E. Cactus Rd. (Big Thanks to Nick !!) We will have a BBQ and after the course we may do a trail run to Table Mesa for those interested.
Post up if you would like to attend.
Have a good one and keep the rubber side down! (although that seems to be getting tougher for me:D )

Count me in. Hopefully the trail run afterwards won't kick my arse too bad as I won't have my new axle/gear ration in by then. I'll be running 3.08 gears/33's/manual tranny. Not a very good combination.

I am in, and will be back from Moab by then. Hopefully my rig won't be down from the trip, and if it is then maybe I will be a volunteer. Thank you both Jeff and Nick!!! Look forward to it.

Well, I am interested and am making definite plans to come up. I would really like to go on the run, but I am not sure my jeep can take it. It is a BONE STOCK 97 TJ. No skids, lift, nothing. (That will change, just give me time....or money. :D ) I have never done any kind of off roading except for trails rated 1. So, can a newbie and his jeep make it?
Thanks,
Hope to see all of you there.
Curly.

Yep, you will be able to make it and a few of us will be ther to give advice and spotting.

Unfortuneately, that date isn't going to work for me. Maybe another time. :(
It is a BONE STOCK 97 TJ. No skids, lift, nothing.
Curly, unless a previous owner removed them, a stock TJ has skids on the tranny/transfer case and the gas tank. With a good set of tires, you will be impressed with how much a stocker can do. You will find most of this group to be very responsible and respectful of what you want to do with your Jeep, regardless of all the teasing and fun-taunting we do on this forum.
Happy trails!

I think it would be a good idea to post it up on the old site and have everyone sign in, so we can get an idea of how many people are actually going to be here, for planning purpose and I'd be embarrassed if I didn't bring enough hamburgers and hot dogs to feed everyone else but my fat arse:rolleyes:

Thanks, I meant that there is no additional stuff like and oil pan skid or diff skid. This TJ is stock right down to factory tires. The dealer must have done a swap, the date code on the tires is feb 05. Uniroyal dealer told me that they were factory tires and had to special order a replacement for me.

There is no cost involved. Other than the gas to get you here and home. The plan for the run is to be done about 6:00 pm. The area we will do the run is just off I-17 North of PHX about 5 mile North of Anthem, before Black Canyon City.
Hope to see you there

What side of town are you on? I have a truck. Was planning on doing the wheeling afterward but can tow the Jeep with the tow bar or borrow a trailer.
I wish my grill wasn't plumbed into the house... my grill has 902 sq/in of cooking area.... oh well, hopefully we can get enough volunteers.... I suppose I could bring my charcoal grill if need be.

BIG THANKS to all who showed up on Sunday. It was a good turnout. Got to put some faces with names, and had a great time. Thanks to Nick for hosting the event. Thanks to Dan, and Travis for helping with the Demos and thanks to all who donated time and knowledge to answer, and ask questions. For those of you that didnt make it out on the trail with us last night. It was quite a bit of fun. I got to align my rock lights, and inspect my driveline without putting it on a lift, tested the strength of my roll cage  , and still save a bunch of money on my car insurance. :D :D

Geez, I'm tired. After leaving Denny's after the trail run (and of course night time recovery 101, or 401 perhaps), making it back to Gilbert, taking a shower.... I didn't get to bed until 3:30 and now I'm at work....errrrrr....
Anyway, thanks to Nick, Jeff, Dan, etc for the event. It was a blast and allowed me to also match names with faces. I don't know who I owe thanks to for the burger and hot dog, but I truly appreciated that limited amount of food I ate during the day as we spent a little longer on Terminator than expected. :p I believe if we spent any longer on the trail we may have resorted to cannibalism....so the food earlier was appreciated.
Too bad we didn't get a picture of me almost flipping backwards as we were close to having 2 recoveries. I also greatly greatly thank Jason for the spotting to get me through there. It's hard enough it being my first time, but having the smallest tires in the group and being opened front/rear with 3.07 gears and a manually tranny didn't help matters. The extra patience was very much appreciated.
I'm looking forward to the rest of the pictures.... hopefully there's a few of me in there somewhere so I can justify to my wife the early removal of driver side Sahara side cladding.... oh well, it was coming off this weekend anyway.

Also glad to see you got home alright last night Jeff. Jeff, Jason and Travis Lost TJ or AZTJ (I think he is having issues with multiple personalities ;) ), thank you for the spotting. Raw Deal was a good time with the group we had out there. Hope the newer wheelers had a good time. Terminator was a blast!! !! Mike (Mingoglia) what a first trail to wheel on, you kicked ***.
Can't wait to see more of the pics come in.
Have a Happy Halloween!!

I missed Jeff's FLIP!? I new I should have gone, darn it! I hope he is ok...
Danzer, looks like you got a great pic of my Jeep getting a few helping hands!
I just wanted to say thnaks to Jeff and Nick, the whole 101 thing was very cool, it was super informative (at least I think I could change an axle now!)
Also, I would like to thank the folks who bought the food. mmm good.
See you all on the trails.
Yeah, not just a flip but a good roll!!:) We didn't get to Denny's until about 1:00. Nick started talking about Moons over my hammy (sp?) and it was over from that point, Denny's at Deer Valley and I-17 didn't know what hit them.
About the helping hands, anytime and at least it looked a little better than the pic she took of Jason when he was putting in his rear axle shaft :D .

Actually it was a video of him but it didn't come out all that great (not nearly as much humping action that got all our attention) and he made sure not to hump his tire back on again so I couldn't get a good shot anymore. :(
Damn you Jason for ruining a great humping video.

hey guys, sorry for the delayed post. had an awesome time wheelin and fixing my junk ( at least half way).
a big thanks to nick and the guys at performance. once again, going above and beyond to help me get back on the road. cant thank you all enough.
another big thanks to jeff?:o adams for all the help on sun. who im sure is not what he had in mind when he said he wanted to meet new people.
i had a helluva time on the trail.even if i only had 2wd:D . you all did great. especially the noobies and stockers.. not a single rock stacked ( pet peeve of mine:mad: )
the way you all wheeled proves the fact that it always comes down to driver skill and not how many mods you have. keep it up and remeber before you stack, try another line.
i really enjoyed getting on the trail again. if it wasnt for the help of true friends like nick and the guys, jeff adams, i wouldnt have been able to. thanks again guys. if ya ever need a hand, dont hesitate to call.

Hey Jeff, I don't recall was your high lift mounted to the back when you rolled? I know what the fate was of the highlift base, but I was curious if it broke that mount?...or if perhaps the actual jack was in the back of the rig at the time.

I think he had his base removed from the jack to make it easier to store. The base of the HiLift makes it difficult to mount on the bumper like he has his.

It was and still is mounted. The base was next to the passenger on the floor, because we used it earlier.

so the mount on the Heep didn't get bent when you flopped? I know of course the highlift was intact because we used it. What I'm getting at is I'm planning on picking up a highlift soon and I was debating whether to mount it vertically like you or mount it in the Heep in the event of a rollover. Figured in a rollover with it sticking straight up in the air it would probably break?

The only thing that got bent was my fenders (getting replaced anyway), and my windshield. The only thing to watch for when mounting vert. is height especially if you have a garage
