My 17-year-old Culligan water softener is in need of being replaced. Culligan seems to make good stuff but they're pricey. Anyone use a different brand that you'd recommend?

Also, I'm aware there are other non-salt-based softener solutions on the market but I'm not aware that they actually work. Anyone have any insights into this?

TIA,
Roger

We've got a Kenmore that's only about 2 years old but it's been working flawless. If I recall it was about $400. I initially filled it with 6-7 bags of salt and I've only had to add maybe 3-4 bags since then.
