I need some more suggestions for trails in the Phoenix area in the 2.5 - 3.0 rating which could be traversed by stock full-size 4x4's (think Suburban, F150, H2...) The ideal trails will have a variety of moderate obstacles and terrain--small ledges, cracks, hills...

Ideas?

Pics?

Thanks!

Thanks, Dave! FR-42 was my first choice, but not sure when it will be open. I will have to do a further examination on Coke Ovens, Box Canyon, and Raw Deal. Work, work, work... :D

Keep 'em coming...

You may also consider the trail to Copperopolis. That is a good 2.5 trail, however there will be pinstriping added to a larger vehicle.

I did Box Canyon and the Coke Ovens with an extended cab/long bed F150. He got hung up only one time...took a strap and we kept going.

Table Mesa rd. east from I17 to seven springs. p.417 in the AZ backcountry adventures book. Rated a five for difficulty but the rating system they use goes to 10 and a ten on that scale would be about a 4 on the scale most of us are used to. Confusing enough?

Nena,

Another good trail would be Bulldog Canyon. You need a permit from the Tonto National Forest Office in Mesa and it's free. Stock Jeeps can make it fine. It's a good beginners trail and very scenic.

I think that any 2.5-3.0 trail you would take a stock or even a slightly modified Jeep on is okay for a stock FS 4x4. In fact, FS vehicles usually have an easier time on these trails. It's a wheelbase thing...

Thanks, all, for the suggestions. Good tips and pics! Now, I just have to do the research. If y'all see a white Jeep parked on the side of a trail, and a woman walking the trail with her arms spread out, pretending she's a suburban, don't have her committed--it will just be me working! :D

I have been trying to fine tune that system, too. It's like converting celsius to fahrenheit. I think the formula should be A=(B/2)-1 Right? :D
