So theoretically (as I don't know drop squat about diesels) what kind of mileage could you expect out of a rig like that? I know all of the other mods done to it would decrease mileage some, but compared to most vehicles that run a diesel our are pretty lite.

With my Cummins in my '01 Dodge truck I can get 14mpg at 19,800 gross combined with my NV4500 and 3.55 gears. I have a weigh slip from that evening and I remember it being just about a couple hundred pounds under 20k...

I've said this before, but I think it's funny that I can get better fuel economy towing the TJ than I can get driving it itself. :D

Well, my Scout weighing in at 4300lbs with a similar 4BT gets 20 to 35 mpg.
Nominal is about 25mpg.
On a trip to Prescott Valley, towing a popup tent trailer I aveaged 23mpg.
Last week a trip to Mingus Mt. towing the same trailer "VentureCraft" I averaged 24mpg.

Diesels rock! A little more time and a little more money and that is how I would roll.

How much would a 4bt cost ?? I'm thinking V8 in the MJ but Diesel would be cool too..

That is what I want to smell on a trail.

You must not have spent much time around the new small diesels. They don't stink and blow smoke everywhere.

From a "junk yard" about $2K to $3K for a complete used engine. If you can find a complete (used) bread truck with the 4BT, the cost is much less, say about $500 and up. Be prepared to replace (upgrade) your drive train when you go to this Diesel.

I contacted the seller got the following response
HI LINDA,I WAS BUOLDING THE JEEP TO BE STREET LEAGLE,WHEN I STARTED THE
PROJECT DEQ APROVED THE PROJECT,BUT NOW THEY SAY IT WOUNT PASS DEQ,I STARTED
WITH A 1997 JEEP TJ WITH BODY DAMAGE,THE BODY IS REPLACED NOW,THE CUMMINS IS
NEW NOT REBUILT IT ONLY HAS 20 HOURS ON IT.THE JEEP ISNT FINISHED,BUT VERY
CLOSE FRANK

He sent pictures. Most of his sale price is in the engine and drivetrain, but there a lot of great parts that go along with it.

http://community.webshots.com/user/p14175 The pictures are in the Diesel TJ album.

Right now I am a lowly engineering intern and I don't make a lot of money. Plus I still have a year of school left! If this came up a year from now, I think I would be renting a trailer and heading up to Oregon.

Just a little FYI. A diesel repower is about a $10k job when done correctly. This guy has all the right parts including a new Cummins engine. Altogether, he has about $10k in the engine and drivetrain alone. When you throw in the rest of the stuff and the vehicle, this is a very good deal.
