View Full Version : Me too (I'm almost done)
One year ago last week, I got an '84 CJ-7 from my Dad and began the slow process of updating it. It was in nearly "museum" condition when I got it. It was 100% factory stock - 59K miles, unmolested, and practically without a scratch. Here's how it looked a few days after I got it -

Since then, I've done the following upgrades/changes:
Howell Fuel Injection
DUI Ignition
Dynatrac ProRock 60s, high pinion, front and rear, with high-clearance steering and disc brakes at all four corners (Joe at Absolute Offroad)
new, heavy duty drive shafts (CV in the rear)
ARBs front and rear
RE 4.5" springs
1" body lift
Simply Offroad Bumpers (front and rear - with swing-away tire carrier)
Corbeau seats
WranglerNW 135 amp alternator
Rancho RS9000 shocks
Dual Optima batteries
Flex-a-lite Dual Electric Fans
New 3-row radiator, water pump, hoses, and heater core
35" MTRs w/ black steel wheels
RuffStuff Heavy Duty Steering Box Bracket (moves box fwd 1")
Here's how it's looking now -

At this point, the tasks I have left to do include:
Install PSC rocker guards (the paint job is almost done on them)
Install air compressor and ARB air lines/solenoids/switches
...then I get to take it wheelin' and beat the snot out of it.

Looks nice. I'm thinking you ought to add a steering box brace. (I couldn't tell for sure from the pictures but it didn't look like you have one.) It seems like the boxes like to work themselves loose on the old CJ's - especially when turning big tires.

or a HD box bracket, before breaking anything. I think mine was from Sam's Offroad, it is zinc plated 1/2" (or 3/8") thick steel. Works great.
Good idea.

I almost want to say that thing is too nice to wheel. But sweet rig!
I almost want to say that thing is too nice to wheel.
Several people have said that - but I can't imagine letting it sit around being pretty. What good would that do me? :(
Oops ... yeah, I'd forgotten to add the heavy duty steering bracket to the list of new additions. I got it from RuffStuff Industries up in Colorado - it's pretty beefy.

Beautiful...both before and after. Very nice work, Steve.
How about rear corner/quarter panel guards?
That first scratch and dent are gonna hurt!

Yes I do - been a member for nearly 10 yrs, used to be a lot more involved (held office, etc.). I've been inactive for several yrs now, but still pay dues and host their web site.

I've got the rocker guards on the garage floor - spray painted and ready to go on. No worries on the scratches and dents, as there should be plenty of them after a year or so :D

Saw Steve's CJ over at Mikes house one afternoon before he started. That is absolutely the cleanest CJ I've ever seen.
Can't wait to see it in person now that you've done all the work.

Rear CORNERS, Steve...not the rocker guards (I saw you mentioned them earlier). If you get the PSC crusher corners and paint 'em to match the rig...that would be really sweet!
I just run the plastic fantastics from Mike and Dave at Simply Offroad. Extremely light and have done a really good job so far. They will never compete outright with steel (like the PSC's), but suited my needs very well.
It's surprising how light an impact it takes to leave a crease or dent in the stock sheetmetal corners/quarters. I took a few before putting the guards on, but have taken several since! Some pretty hard shots, too. The tub would be much more mangled without the Simply Offroad pieces on there. As it is, with them, I've only got some scratches in the plastic, and one crack along the bottom of where one wraps around the tub corner...from a particularly hard drop impact.
Can't wait to see you on the trails!

Hi Steve, yea I remember you. I used to run the Cluster, (WA7KPH), up in Heber for years till the lightning took it out. I'm not too active either unless a new one is started somewhere.
I was a member way back when 75 - 90 something. Almost a Charter member, but missed it by a meeting or so.

I have always liked the dash in the CJ's. Kinda reminds me of a 48 Dodge power wagon. :D

Baney that's awful nice of you to start making custom "Absolute Offroad" stickers. :D :D :D

My thinking has been to wait until I dent in the corners, then put the steel corners on. They become a cover-up :D

Stopped by John's this morning to check out the progress ... he's doing a nice job on the cage. But, I know it doesn't compare to what YOU've got for a cage :D

I STARTED WITH A BASIC CAGE & JUST KEPT ADDING NEW BARS WHEN I GET THE $$$ IN FACT THIS WEEK SOMETIME HUNTER IS ADDING MORE BARS TO IT :D IT JUST TAKES TIME & $$$$$$
Yeah yeah. John refers to your cage as an "ongoing project". Like anything else on a Jeep, it's never really done.

Steve,
Glad you went to Hunter...his work is just awsome. I have seen some of his cages that are more art work than just a cage. And fully functional is what he is about.
