View Full Version : Jeep hauler - ramp needed

Just bought my first Jeep hauler trailer. This sucker is 22 foot long. I mostly need it for a cross country move (I'm also moving a Jeep trailer) and then I think I'll sell it and get a 16 or 18 foot. It's not the best width but I'll make do.
This trailer has no ramp so I need to make my own. I don't anticipate using it alot. Should I just use 2x12's or do I need something more stout? A steel ramp would be nice. I guess I could have some ramp holders made for under the trailer. I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars if I can help it.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill

I use big tires... :)
Really, if you don't want to get the ramps and you are not going to use the trailer that much, if your tires are big enough, you should be able to just drive up on the trailer (or use a winch if you have one)
Otherwise, you could go with something like this from Northern Tool:
6500 LBS Aluminum Loading Ramps (http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=6970&productId=200306671&R=200306671)

Yeah for the discounted price of only $429
I'm only on 33's so "trailer climbing" probably isn't going to work. Thanks for the comments anyway though!

What about buying a inexpensive aluminum ramp at harbor freight
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=44649
and then cutting it down some. (Maybe in 1/2 or even more ?)
I know most of these are rated around 1000 to 1500 lbs. but that is over the full span of the ramp, the shorter you make it, should increase its capacity alot.

Plus you only have one wheel on each ramp, so the weight per wheel(ramp) is approximately (but not quite) 1/4 of the total Jeep weight.
You might even be able to get some of the ramps (http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDetail.aspx?categorycode=3400&mfrcode=BLI&mfrpartnumber=11905) some people use to work underneath their vehicle (they park 2 tires on them). line them up with the back of the trailer and keep driving past them onto the trailer.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I just got an add that says those ramps are on sale for $40 now. Maybe I'll get those a try.

The good thing about the ramps that I posted is you can use them at another time for something else. My TJ was about 8" short from me sitting underneath it. So when we did the SYE we parked the rear tires up on the ramps. It made underneath perfect sitting height.

Thanks James. I have a set similar to those bit it was about 8 inches too low compared to the trailer. I guess I could just lock and load, so to speak, but I'd rather have something I could just drive up. I do use those ramp stands for other things, though, and you're right, they're very useful.
BTW, James - I'm putting in an SYE this weekend so I'll be in touch to return the transfer case lowering kit I borrowed.

You can make (or have someone make) some ladder type ramps like what came with my trailer...

Not a bad idea Matt. Do you think I could swing by and take a few pics of yours so I can show someone what I'm looking for?
