My old worn out box  SPRUNG a LEAK  !

About 8 months ago I had Pat over at Bench Works build me a steering pump for my XJ.
From what I was told by Pat, "The stock XJ pump is High Pressure BUT, I will tweek it a little more for you".
He also suggested a Large Piston Box would work well with the new pump, and it would turn the 35's better in the rocks with the 18:1 ratio VS stock XJ's 14:1.
My stock steering gear box was alright at the time so I passed.

Well after pounding on the stock steering gear for the last 8 months it was getting hard to turn when at an idle and then finaly sprung a leak.

So this is what I did.

I found an O-Ring style J20 steering gear box from a newer J-series 3/4 ton truck and took it to Bench Works for a good fixin.

If you look for one BEWARE!!! Some are Flare Nut. I'm not sure of the years maybee some here is and could post them. It may be worth it to look into getting one from NAPA or something.

I didnt have them drill for RAM ASSIST, I didnt want to spend another $100  YET

The only thing that I had to do to make the large piston J-20 box fit was shim it off the frame 3/16" and needed longer grade 8 bolts.
Thats it.
I filled her up with SYN. Fluid and let her idle to operating temp. before turning the wheel.

here are some pics.

I had to SHIM the SHIM, if you know what I mean.

If anyone does this mod on a XJ, save youself a problem down the road and brace your steering box like the first pic and re-enforce the uniboby with the C-rock or something like it. My unibody broke at the steering box some time ago and I had to Fish Plate it. Its held up well since.

So far the thing steers like a dream. Better then my 98 XJ with 31's.
BUT,
Let me drive her around some, wheel her a bit, then I will give an update.

I have a J20 box in my CJ from a '79. It was almost a direct replacement. All I had to get hoses for a '79 CJ with PS, but my hoses needed replaced anyway.
I did mod (http://www.off-road.com/ih/jweed/pwrstr.htm) the pump too.

It works great with 38's too.

Nice write up on the pump....

The only part that would worry me as a DIY-er is where the write up states "Note: as a precautionary measure you will want to remove about an 1/8" off the stem part (the part that fits into the center of the small spring) of the seat. If you do not remove this you risk jamming the bypass shut. This will cause you to blow out a hose or a seal."

Doesnt anyone own a set of Measuring Calipers?
I assume a person should remove as much off the stem as the thickness of (#4 machine washers) added ???

Would you agree ?

Also is anyone running a PS Cooler

I thought about trying a Tranny cooler of a Factory XJ tow package.
I know some Fords run Factory PS Coolers.

Yes, that would probably be correct.

If you run that cooler on the low side there shouldn't be any problems.

That is a very efficient cooler but in the stock location on the XJ does not get alot of air flow

when I did mine I used a 10" puller fan stacked on top of 2 10x10 oil coolers where the airbox used to be. one for power steering and one for tranny. The fan was temp controled with an adjustable thermostat, tranny never ran over 200. setup fti in nice and rustys air tube did not interfer at all.

I also have a Rustys Air Tube, and I like the idea.
Could you post a pic of your Fan/Cooler set-up???

Thanks,

Geno.

Sometime in the early or mid 80s steering box manufacturers switched from flare nuts to O-rings for sealing. A remanufactured Saginaw steering box for a J20 costs less than $300 with a good core.
