I'm starting this thread hopefully to be a collection of placemarks for those who were lucky enough to pick up google earth, before the link expired.
Here, maybe we could upload the placemarks to our favorite offroading sites, and I do have an archived copy of google earth if anyone needs. Joe, can you enable file uploading of .kmz extensions? This is the extension of the placemarks.
Please, if you create and upload a bookmark (if we can enable it), include a description within the bookmark. Just right click on your placemark to edit it and then save as.. the bookmark to your harddrive and hopefully upload it here. I think this could be a great library off our trails.

you can still download google earth from google's webpage. Just go to the regular google webpage and click on the link 'more' and scroll down to the bottom.

P.S. Still free

I've got Google Earth and have had just a short time to play with it. I saw somewhere posted, (might have been on another forum), that the person posting could see "tire tracks on the trail". The quality I get when zooming in on something (my house, for instance) is no where near that. I set my moniter display to the recommended setting with no real change in quality. Am I missing something or?

TIA,

No big deal, I was just curious if maybe I had something set up wrong and wasn't getting the detail other folks were. I think it's a neat toy to play with anyhow. :D

nothing wrong, they were just exagerating a bit! You cant see tire tracks but you can see trails through the desert. Also it depends on where you are looking...Some places have high res photos and some don't

I hope to get more time to play with it, I like seeing areas I used to live in etc. Has anyone looked at areas in other countries etc? I haven't had time to look to see if it has that option or not.

TIA,

I was just using it. Trying to find sunflower mine and some other places.

I was checking out Bartlett Dam and the pic quality was very good. It looks like your about 250' above it.

Cool.

Ok, so maybe someone that has webspace can host a place to upload and download the placemarkers. I have about 8 or so, all the entrances to favorite trails.
Also, check out the google earth bbs. There's different applications on there that you can download. I picked up one today that layers national weather service radar over google earth... I can see the storm cloud out my front window live on google earth!

The photos in my neighborhood (FLW and 101) were actually taken in March 2005.

I have searched around Europe as well since I was recently in Ireland. Dublin has just as much detail as the maps in the US, but the address lookup functionality doesnt work really well...

The tilt function is cool to, I found Payett Draw, then tilted down and was able to see topography. The Rim looked neat.
Now I'm headed over seas :D

I'm having trouble with Sunflower mine. I can find Sedona and 87 and "about" where the turnoff is at the top of the hill, but can't seem to zoom the right area for the road in.

Try looking at some trails in Moab like Hell's Revenge. You can see that tire marks on the slick rock...

The coordinates for the Sunflower Mine turnoff are:

W 33 56 36.48
N 111 26 59.79

My version of GE has the turn off in very low quality photos. As soon as you get off the main drag and hit the unpaved road, the quality shoots up. I've noticed that these "Quality" photos are usually the result of someone who wants to do something with the land in the area. Whether it be more mining, housing development or whatever I can't guess.
