I know of a nice spot up on the Rim that overlooks the Payson area and makes for a great camping spot. It has a large mostly underground red rock that serves as a patio/staging area sometimes. A few others in the club want to go up also and spend some time camping and Jeeping up there so I figured that I would post up on the boards to see if anyone else wants to go.
I will leave Thursday 07-21 to get there early and save some spots (hopefully). Rich and Kathy Evans will probably come up Thursday or early Friday. Irv and Shirley Kanode will probably come up on Saturday the 23rd.
Anyone else is welcome to come up and camp or Jeep for the day. I am thinking we will head out around 11 am each day to do some trails and explore. Let me know if you want to go and when you think you will be there and I will provide you with a map and directions.
Take care,
S

Put us down as definite unless something really bad happens. We should see you Thur evening.
Will you have that CB installed by then?? Maybe you could PM me your cell number and I'll do the same. I get lost easy. :)

Very interested as I'm off from the 20th through the 23rd and am interested in doing something.
When did you want to go up on the 21st? I might just tag along with you. :)
BTW, do I need any sort of permit?

I want to leave no later than 3:30pm on the 21st, preferrably around 3. That should put everyone who leaves that day up there with time to set up before dark. Rich and Kathy have a camper so their setting up is already done. I will have to set up my tent and stake out the girls.
Yes you will need a permit, a couple of them actually. They have Andrew Jackson's picture on them and 20's in every corner. I can take them. :D

Hmmm... that would only give me one good day to wheel, well maybe 2 if I want to do it on the 23rd instead of coming home in the AM.
What trails are you looking to run?
As for the 20's well they will be in my gas tank. :D
I guess I could go up on the 20th and pitch tent for an extra night on my own. Are they allwoing fires up there or no?

I am open to leaving earlier but want to be at the campsite when Rich and Kathy arrive, or anyone else on other days.
As far as trails I am not picky about what we run. I think a lot of exploring (maybe some swimming) will be occuring. :)

Earlier in the day or the 20th? I don't care if we chill out at the campsite waiting around for them. Being outside is a hell of a lot better then being at work or inside. :D
Swimming might be nice too.
Decisions, decisions... LOL

Well if you are game to leave around 9 or 10 am (give you some sleep), I'd be game to head up there with ya.
What is needed? Like I said before I'm going to assume fires are a no-no. What are we doing for food and the like? I always cooked over an open flame when I camped out. I've never camped here in AZ before.

Sleep?? When the Great Outdoors is calling?? Perish the thought!! There is not much I love more than camping, hiking, or Jeeping. They are allowing fires around and by Flagstaff (my ex camped in Locketts Meadow the other week and they had a fire) so I assume fires are ok, but I will call the Ranger Office first.
I was just thinking that I am going to have to bring enough COUNTRY cd's and beer to last for 5 days!! All I have is my Jeep and M101 trailer...how much extra room will you have in your ride?? :D
Actually I am thinking of bringing enough food for dinner Thursday (probably have lunch in Payson), all meals Friday and Saturday then running into Payson for some grub to bring back to the site. Gonna bathe in the lakes and such I suppose, otherwise the mutts will not want to be near me. Except at feeding time of course.
I have a camp stove and a little gas grille I usually cook on. I used to have a grate for cooking over fires many moons ago.

Hmm,
I just have the back of the Jeep. I'd pack my tent, a bag of clothes, air matress and sleeping bag w/ pillow. Probably my cooler too but I don't know if I should pack perishables (hot dogs mostly).
As for country, I'll thump you out with my rock stations. :p

Okie doke, lets meet at the Wendy's at Beeline and Shea at 10 am if that works. That way anyone else who comes up for the day or to stay will not have to leave too early.
I am thinking of using dry ice since I believe it stays colder longer than "regular" ice or ice packs.
Don't play P Diddy I aint goin campin to hear nothing thumpin from the city!! lol :)

Beeline and Shea... oh right across from the Shell station. Ok. I was trying to think where Beeline was. :o
Where can one get some dry ice?

Getting under my Jeep today I seem to have a "slight" fatigue of the passenger side lower control arm bracket.
Actually if I can't find someone to fix it ASAP, then I won't be going anywhere none the less driving my Jeep for a while.
I'll keep you informed.

Ok, it looks as if I'm still game for this trip. Hunter will be fixing it up for me Tuesday/Wednesday. If something drastic happens then I'll let you know.
I'm still a go!!

Yay Hunter!!
You can get dry ice at most grocery stores. You cannot handle it with bare skin, you must use tongs or gloves.

Damn, I have wanted to do something like this w/some Jeepers for a while, but I had some surgery Thursday, and I do not think I should be camping and wheeling a week later. Hopefully you all have fun, and more of these happen the future. FWIW, I have had good luck with frozen(H2O) 2 Liter soda bottles in my ice chest. Not messy, and they stay cold a while. Dry ice is a pain. Have fun, and have a cold one for me :D . John

The 2 liter bottles are a good idea, just like block ice instead of crushed. I just happen to have two bottle that I will be able to use.
Good call!!!
Too bad you won't be able to make it. I'll drink one for ya. ;)

I will drink TWO for you John. Well, one for you and one for me. Then one for WD, and one for CJ, one for Creeker, one for Mrs. Creeker, another one for you and..... :D

Ok, it looks like we have 7 Jeeps and their occupants coming and going over the course of Thursday through Sunday. I figure no one is coming up Monday since that is the day to head back. Anyone else who wants to come up is welcome to, just let me know before 7 am on Thursday.
Since the staging area has a few campsites around it and the rest are a short distance from there I will mark the turns to the staging area with red plastic ties. They are sections of plastic ribbon kind of like the Police crime scene ribbons. The turn off from the Rim Road to get to the site is at "Lee Johnson spring".
I am going to try to get GPS co-ordinates for the turns also from a club member.
I think we are going to meet at the staging area (big red rock patio) for runs at 10:30-11am each day starting Friday. Meals and evenings also. I will bring my campfire singing voice!!

Okie-doke I just talked to the Payson Ranger station. It looks like we will be in the Apache Sitgraves National Forest. Fires are not restricted there.

Sweet I was just going to ask about fires!!!! I hate not caming without my little fire.
So who are the 7 Jeeps?
Me, you, katavas....
Do we need camping permits or anything. Cost/day???
Stomper
07-20-2005, 12:58 AM
Permits?? We don't need no stinking permits. I do not think so....
Me, katvans (Rich or Creeker or in the Creek and his wife Kathy), Irv and Shirley Kanode, Mike Score, you, CypherJoe, Mike (who runs with the Rim Country 4 wheelers) makes 7. Of course others may come or some of these may not show up so that number can change.
It should be a good time. The sites are not too close together and not too far apart.

S

I was checking out the e-mail but didn't quite get it. Just so I understand, the red flag areas are the camping spots. So we'll be like 100+ feet from one another if we are back off 87, that's cool. :D No group camping but no big deal. At least you and I get the cool spots. ;) :D
Is this rim road paved or dirt?
I can't wait!!!! I so need to get away for a few. :)
BTW, plotting on Streets and Trips, the Rim Rd (including Old Rim Rd.) is just over 51 miles. Just something to think about if we wanted to try that.
Also, I'll be leaving either Saturday after wheeling or Saturday morning. I haven't decided yet which one. I gotta work on Sunday. :(

The Rim Road is paved. The Red Rock patio has three sites near it and others are near meadows. I believe the flags are turning points.
If you have "Backcountry Adventures Arizona" the map on page 306 shows the entire Rim Road. Where FR-308 heads north we will head south to the viewpoint.
I bought some flourescent orange plastic ribbon to mark where/which way people should turn.
Rich and Kathy are coming up Thursday evening, most everyone else are shooting for Saturday am.
Edit: I am bringing some wood plus my chainsaw. Maybe my hockey mask to. Assuming the rim is dry firewood should not be a problem.

Ok.... question though. We can play hockey killer and use deadwood in the National forests for fuel? I was under the impression that we couldn't do stuff like that.
As for the book, I don't have that one and need to get it. :D I thumbed though it a few weeks back and it sure is a nice book.

As long as the wood is on the ground it is fair game. You cannot cut down or pull down any live wood or trees. Camping once at Roosevelt Lake some yahoos came in, hooked up a chain to a tree and began to pull at about 3 am. The Rangers put a stop to that real quick.

Hey, I plan to get some Beef Stew, Sauerkraut and sausages to cook/grill up for us.
Did you plan to bring a pot? I don't have my camping pot here in AZ. :(

I bought beef stew for Sunday night's dinner!! Ha ha ha!! I have all the food I need since I struck a deal with Rich and Kathy that will get me dinner Friday and Saturday. Maybe lunch those days also. I just make sure that no pics of Rich being strapped over an obstacle or stuck get taken and in return for my protection they feed me. :D
They will be leaving Phoenix around 4pm Thursday Rich said so they should be up between 6-7pm. A customer from work may come up tomorrow also if his wife lets him. Everyone else is coming late Friday or early Saturday as far as I know. Most are leaving Sunday sometime so I may be the only one up there Sunday night, excluding the girls of course!! They are looking forward to getting out of the back yard that is for sure!!

I don't know hoe I stumbled on this old thread, but I thought it was funny because I initially read the last line as, "Did you plan to bring pot?" It just brought back teenage camping flashbacks.
