View Full Version : New to Jeeps and Arizona!

Thought I would introduce myself here in General. I recently purchased a new 2005 Jeep Rubicon Unlimited. I have installed a CB, Home Despot Disco's, and a Warn front diff skid. Just ordered bumpers today, should be here by next week. Currently putting together a recovery/tool kit for the rig. What sort of extra parts would be critical on the trail? U-Joints? Tie rod ends?
In addition, I am also new to the state of Arizona. I am transfering in from California, as a graduate student at ASU. My wife and I love the outdoors, and figured a Jeep would suit our needs as far as access to the great outdoors AZ has to offer.
I am interested in finding a Jeep club to join. Perferably a club that not only likes to off-road, but hike and camp as well.
Best,

Welcome to Arizona and to the Jeepin' world. Looks like your ready to jump right into things. What off road experience do you have? There's a lot here to offer for trails. From mild dirt roads to extreme rock-crawling. If you haven't looked already, you can find trips at this site: http://www.azvjc.org/OldSite/Default.asp as well as posted trips in this forum. Again, welcome to Arizona.

Welcome to Jeephood and to Arizona. Sounds like you have a nice Jeep. AZVJC is sort of a club - check out www.azvjc.org for info on trips and runs.
I'd like to take this time to encourage you to participate in a land use meeting on behalf of this hobby. Once we get past the heat of summer, you'll start to see trail cleanups, too. Those are great ways to help keep the trails open.
Your participation is going to become critical to keeping our trails open. The MASSIVE influx of new residents is without a doubt going to put a strain on our trail systems. Once the greenies and the Forest Service, State Land and BLM start seeing increased impact on trails, I guarantee you're going to see closures. That moves the activity to smaller and small areas where impact will grow and will probably someday lead to a relatively small amount of trails close to the city. So enjoy what we have now (responsibly of course) and please help us keep them open.
Also, don't go out alone and go with someone who knows the area. That what AZVJC is for! Sign up for a trail run and have some fun.

Wow... welcome to the board and AZ!!! :)
I've been here a year now and there are some really cool people that seem to do all three of the things you mentioned, including me. It's a little warm down here for the hiking and camping part but up north it's pretty nice.
Check out the the old site www.azvjc.org for trip info along with this site.
U-Joints, and TRE's would be good along with another tie-rod in general if need be in case you taco that one up. You guys have air for your lockers right, spare air lines might be good too.
Keep your eyes on the board for occassional meet and greets that are posted up. I think we're going to try for another one sometime soon and try to do a monthly thing so that everyone across the valley can try and make one every few months.
Again, welcome to the board and to AZ!!!! I look forward to checking out that bad boy in action. :)

I have been lurking around this forum for a few weeks now. Since JP broke the ice, I may as well dive in too! Welcome JP - I am also somewhat new to AZ and to Jeeps. I moved here in 2000, and bought a '98 TJ a few months ago. I named her "Desert Rat" in honor of the informal name of a military unit I was a member of some years ago. She is bone stock but in great shape. I am starting to make some modifications - I have an engine skid plate on order as well as a bunch of CB components. I mounted tow hooks on the front and got a receiver mount D ring shackle for the rear and a recovery strap.
As of yet, I have not taken her off road, but I plan on doing so as soon as I have her ready and my schedule permits. I am also lacking in the area of experience. My last vehicle was a '87 Toyoto 4x4 truck, which I have driven on some forest service roads and some dirt roads for hunting/camping purposes - but never for any serious off road driving.
My Jeep is my sole means of transportation, so I don't plan to make any extreme mods. I would also like to keep her in one piece :-)

Welcome to Arizona. I moved here a few years back with my wife also to attend graduate school... I had my undergrad from ASU from many years ago, but I went to grad school at Thunderbird over in Glendale. After I finished I got a job here, so I decided to stick around for a little while.
Where in California are you from? I grew up in the Bay Area.

Sounds like you've got a good start on the LJ. A mild lift and some bigger tires will get you through most of the trails here, especially with that wheelbase and lockers

Well, all I can say is that it has been a wild ride.
Anyhow, I am taking a serious break from this website and club in general. I will be around...may even be on th trail...who knows.
for the record...
I will not be threatened with physical harm, or more general threats like "You will pay". Frankly, I find it apalling that upon confornting the Moderators on this board with such activities...I received a "whatever" type of response.
I may have challendged your beliefs, I may have posted provocative stuff, but I never, ever resorted to such comments.
The irony was that I was the one threatened to be banned, for sarcasm no less. For placing a tad bit of pressure on those who obviously find wheeling more in their interest than helping out the club as a whole. Just remember that folks were posting about the last land use meeting in "other" trip reports...Insisting that the land use meeting was more important than wheeling.
We already have a large population of OHV users that leech of our efforts...I find it discouraging that folks in this club defend the right to do the same.
Thanks, I will remember that at future land use meetings.

This may or may not be lost on you John, but the single most important word that comes to mind is credibility.
You allowed arrogance to get in the way of good judgement and thus tarnished your credibility with a good number of people who might otherwise have been more tolerant, as they are with many of us, or at least have been so far.
All the best.
Barry

The irony was that I was the one threatened to be banned, for sarcasm no less.
sar·casm ( P ) Pronunciation Key (särkzm)
n.
1. A cutting, often ironic remark intended to wound.
2. A form of wit that is marked by the use of sarcastic language and is intended to make its victim the butt of contempt or ridicule.
You whine about people personally attacking you, read the bold part of the definitions of your favorite word as of late, sarcasm, and tell me how that is much different.
For placing a tad bit of pressure on those who obviously find wheeling more in their interest than helping out the club as a whole.
And did I not explain to you exactly why people would find what you did annoying.
If you feel the need to target people, target the ones that do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to promote the club, tread lightly and the fact we do care for the environment, here in this club.
Just remember that folks were posting about the last land use meeting in "other" trip reports...Insisting that the land use meeting was more important than wheeling.
And people also got chewed out for being harsh in them too.
John, take that break and hopefully when you do come back there is more to land use and club promotion then clean ups.
.... and you never did answer how many other 4x4 clubs were out there Sunday.

John,
Not sure, you leaving is the right answer or a good one. In spite of your sometimes approach, your still a good guy.
Certainly, things get heated on here from time to time, no more so than Uncle Marcell, Eunice, and the 6 kids over at the house on Thanksgiving. I have found that things rarely get as heated face to face as they do on line. On line, it is difficult to convey emotions and we often chose harsh words to express ourselves in order to get our point across. That said, Uncle Marcell and that band of heathens still gets welcomed back and in fact we even look forward to them coming albeit sometimes only to see what the kids will tear up, Eunice will screw-up in the kitchen and Uncle Marcell will say before he passes out.:D
No one here is gonna punch you out and I doubt very seriously that anyone is going to drive up and see you at the meet spot early on a Sun morn and turn their Jeep around cause they don’t want to wheel with you. Heck, don’t leave as I haven’t had a chance to wheel with you and I look forward to it.
We all get opinionated sometime, I am luck since I never do but hey, I don’t mind if the other fella does.
Yes we and I think I am speaking for all of us not just the turd in my back pocket will wheel with you, help you get over an obstacle, fix a flat and share a cold drink out on the trail.
So maybe close out a few threads and lets look for each other out on the trail.

I agree with you, I like him too but.... this past time I think he finally crossed the line, especially with me. It's almost like he got some tunnel vision going and didn't comprehend (or already passed judgement) anything I told him over PM's. If he did he wouldn't have said some of what he posted above.

Dude,
I have nothing against you and even tried to talk to you about my concerns (this is probably more time than some people would give you). I don't have the time to debate you online through PM's. If you go back and look at the correspondence we went back and forth, the answers to the last questions you asked me were in the first PM's I sent you. For this reason I ended the debate.
For the record, in my mind; I didn't threaten you, I warned you.
Good luck and happy trails.

I don't know that many have problems with John's viewpoints. We are all allowed our own. The problem I saw was with with the presentation and an apparent general lack of respect that eroded perhaps all around.

There's nothing wrong with new ideas and different ideals. That's what makes the world go 'round. John's starting post here was in the right direction. The continuous challenging of member's preferences, morality, lifestyle,etc... gets old. You are the new kid on the block and like most social groups all through life; you need to ease your way in to such a large group. Shoving yourself down our throats is not the way. Your posts getting uglier and uglier is not the way. So much freakin negativety...:( We all preach to the choir, but not on a continuous basis. How about starting a thread about your Jeep or asking Jeep related questions to challenge minds here? You made it personal; John. None of us are perfect, but we sure as hell don't need that pointed out in every thread. Playing the signature and avitar game is childish.
Just an idea here, but a great way to meet people here is to throw a meet and greet or a home party. Get involved in more runs. This gives the members here a chance to get to know you close and personal. We like to speak "Jeep" here and try not to get so tied up in life's inperfections. Most of us vent on occassion, state our case and leave it at that. This is not a formal club so to speak, and it's hard to make people accountable for their actions. If there is to be change; we first need organization.
You bring up valid issues, but none that we haven't discussed or heard about before. If you are pushing people to the brink of making idle threat; take a hint. At that point you are angering people and causing spite. This is not a good approach to change.
I have a real problem with alcohol consumption on the trail. I don't like the liability it leaves with the rest of the group on a run. I bring it up about once a year here when I get a bit pieved. Comments are made whether (+) or (-) and it's left at that. I try to lead by example on my runs. You'll find that the majority of my posts are jokes, lending ideas and advice on a Jeep problem or telling my life story. After quite a few years in the outdoors; people have gotten to know me. Most know how to take me. I would never walk into another man's church and start preaching the gospel without first earning the respect and "credibility" that one should have. This is just one of life's little lesson's that come by way of experience and not through readings. ;)
I wish you the best and welcome you to make a fresh introduction.

Wow, that last sentence sounded like a threat!!!!
I find your whinning disengenous since the last post I had from you was in the form of a PM, where you insulted my wife, my children, my religious beliefs and my intelligence.
You are the first to cry foul when someone calls you for your insulting and abusive words, yet when you attack beyond the bounds of decorum you do it via PM, where your excessive behaivior is not seen by the group as a whole, then when the response is posted honestly and publicly, you cry "foul!"
Once again, as I pointed out before, typical liberal tactics.
If you think any will miss your divisive and destructive verbal sewage, please note the impression left when you pull your finger out of water.
Thats you.

Yeah, lets try and keep the welcoming to welcoming and the arguing to arguing seperated in different posts. I realize this is an ongoing back and forth thing between a few people on here, but I find it fairly annoying (and I seriously doubt that I am alone) when I go in ready to welcome a few new people to the club and have to get in the middle of all of this again. Its like a disease thats affected every popular posting in the last few weeks, and its making me not want to read anything on this site anymore. So lets play nice....and do what we came to this post to do... to Welcome new members.

You are exactly right. The only problem with that logic and this thread is that the original welcome post was from 8 months ago and that same person is the one that brought this thread back to the top today for the sake of stirring up more schitt before making his exit.
