View Full Version : Tube Door Crash Test

I gave a friend a pair of tube doors for his birthday and in return he provided me with the first real world crash test on said doors. It was a passenger side flop into a pool of water that just happened to be hiding a turtle shell shaped boulder that did this damage. You can see by the condition of the sport cage that the impact was significant. The impact on the door pushed the striker inward. Overall the door did just what I designed it to do. Stay closed and keep the boulder out of your lap or torso. As far as the door goes, if you have a 3/16" hex wrench and five dollars for a new latch, it is as good as new.

Sigh....

Where did it happen? Plus what else is busted up?

EDITED to add:

The door does look great after the flop, actually one of the only things that looks original. :D I'd love to see an olympic door after something like that. :D

Ahhh... That must have been what all the claiming it on insurance questions were about on jeepbbs board....makes sense now. Looks like the doors held up good!!! :D They did thier job of keeping the occupant safe in an off-road situation, exactly what they were designed for.

I am pleased with how they worked. The rollover part sucks but I am glad to have the first "test" out of the way.

Yeah, Gris the doors held up great. It will be a lot cheaper to fix the doors then it will be to fix the cage.

that cage suck's i have flopped many times with only minor scratches, maybe next time he should build a cage as strong as the door. he should take his jeep to hunter off road, John did a great job on my cage since your friend flops as much as i do :D

That is not a cage!! It is a sport bar. A little flop and it bends the bracket through the dash. What would happen in a hard roll????
:D :D

I hope you have a leg restraint on the new cage. :D

By the way. a nice tube door would keep that leg inside. ;)

it would be good if stupid people would keep their limbs inside their vehicles while their rolling :D

The video really shows how sport bars are not cages. That was a good roll but a real cage would have held up better than that.
This is why I say build a cage to the type of wheeling you do. Like the harder trails then build a cage the right way not the cheap way.

Just so you know, that afternoon I ran my Jeep over to Moab 4x4 Outpost and had Steve Nantz make me up a cage that is tied into the frame. The next day I was out wheeling Prichett Caynon. :D

After I new I was going to roll I got my leg in and held on for dear life. Now when I start to tip I know better, this is something I have not forgotten. There have been several times on the trail when I wheel with buddies and they stick their arm out when they start to tip. Sometimes I have to say something, the other times just as they do it, they pull there body parts back in and they make fun of themselves pointing out they don't want to be like me. It really has been a learning experince for myself and others around me. Its a hard instinct that you need to let go of when you are in a 4000lb vehicle.
