View Full Version : This is Drew's wife, Drewdog is missing

Drew rode with Jeff this morning, they left our house at about 4 am to head out to the 4 peaks mountain area to help with a buggy that was stuck out there. I don't know who else was with them, but he said there would be other jeeps. He doesn't have cell service or his cell is dead, it just goes straight to voicemail. I was expecting him home around 11 or so and its so hot out there, I'm getting really worried. Has anyone heard anything?

Thanks,
Sara

Recoveries often take a lot more time than anticipated. I don't think it's time to worry but your concern is understood and we'll do everything we can to help with whatever might be needed. I don't know anything about this one or who may be on it but someone will make contact soon, I'm sure. I'll monitor this thread...

I was planning to do some night wheeling tonight, so my Jeep is already loaded and ready to go. If the need is there I will change my plans and go search for Drew and the group he is with.

For what it is worth, however, I agree with David C. It is very likely that the recovery is simply taking much longer than anticipated. I will keep watching this thread for updates.

Is there information about where they went? The info for the last rescue I did at Four Peaks was off by several miles.

4wheelinHawkeye
05-31-2014, 05:28 PM
Josh's phone goes straight to voicemail as well. If indeed he is on the same recovery, as David said, they very well could still be working on it and have no cell service in that area.

Sounds like it's been a good 12 hours. It's 105 out there, I would think if they couldn't get the buggy to run under it's own power, they would leave it until it cools down in the evening.
Can we get more information to their where a bouts? Did he mention going up 4 Peaks Mountain, or down in the Rolls?
I don't have spot lights on my XJ, but if anyone is going to look for them and needs a second jeep for safety, I can follow.

If this is a recovery for a buggy, then I believe their location could be narrowed down to just a few places. I'm replacing the radiator in my Jeep right now so I can't head out but I can PM my thoughts as to where they could be.

I wish I had more info but I don't. I'm not sure what Jeff's jeep looks like and I don't know the exact location of the buggy that they were trying to recover. I was hoping someone here knew more about this. I still can't get ahold of Drew and its been 13 hours. I think we should try to narrow down where they might be and see if we can send some jeeps out to help.

A trail called xxxxxxxxx or the trail xxxxxxxxx. If you need clarification, please send PM.

By the way, a recovery from either of these trails could easily run over 15-17 hrs.

I think you should edit your post and keep this to PM only. Unfortunately those trails would also exclude the majority of VJC members from being able to lend assistance. PM headed your way...

Check the parking/staging lots on both sides of the highway for any tow rigs with a trailer big enough for a buggy. If no tow rigs in lot, probably no buggy beyond.

I'm just guessing, here, and throwing out ideas. I could be wrong on this - I am not a hardcore wheeler and don't know much about it. But I do know there are only a handful of trails for them off the Beeline.

I talked to Jeff last night. They were going to recover Blazer10's rig that broke down last weekend. I don't remember all the details but it sounded like he blew up axles front and rear. I think he had spares for the rear that they were taking out so he could at least have 2 wheel drive. I have called Jeff a couple of times and it goes right to voicemail. I'm trying to get in touch with his wife to see if she has heard from them. I'll post up if I find anything out!

Thanks for all the response everyone. It looks like a few Jeeps are approaching the 4 Peaks Rd turnoff.

Keep in mind this effort is most likely to find and deliver a message to Drew and crew to please call home with an update.
Buggy drivers are always very prepared and do their own recovery. Plus, I doubt any rigs not buggy equipped could make it close to where they are. A short hike down a boulder-filled wash may be required to find them.

Ok, yes this is the same recovery Josh went to assist with. Someone asked to describe his jeep....black 89 xj on 40's with a very large dent in the hood. Still have not heard back from him. He didnt say much about location other than a hardcore buggy trail.

Sara, from what I can tell, they are where we think they are. There is no way they could be considered "missing". Don't you worry. It's an easily accessible area that has a lot of traffic (at least at the upper end of the wash).

I recovered a rig out of there with 1 wheel drive. It took well over 6 hours just to go about a 1/4 mile through the rock section.

ShmUDE
05-31-2014, 09:28 PM
i do kinda want to laugh at this thread. It was an extremely hard buggy trail that a rig was busted on and could only be repaired to 2wd and had to be on a strap the rest of the time. I saw the guys at the lake at 10:45. The rig was already "fixed" and they were having a few cold ones before the long recovery process. I stayed until 4 and left with one other rig to head back home and caught these guys just barely out of the rock section and they were still having problems with the rig as well as others.

Not sure why they were expected home at 11am but that number is not even close to what it should have been. If they weren't back by midnight, id be somewhat worried, but not really because there was about 15 other rigs out there.

want to thank everyone for the hrlp and the concern for us. it was my buggy that broke last week and had to leave it. we went in with 8 rigs cause we new with 2wd it was gonna be ruff
like ty said we patched up my buggy the best we could and went to the water to cool off before the long trek out of there, on the way out another rig broke so we two rigs with 2wd
to get out so we had a long hard day fto say the least.carnage was 2 front cromos and a ring and pinion on one rig and a yoke on the other and jeff was right those ramps were heavy and drewdog was a animal moveing them all day. we went through 10 cases of water that canyon gets warm. sorry Sara for your worries there is no cell service out there.
im sure after the 17 hours in there we can say we have been to hell and back.again thank you to every one for the help.

Everyone needs to look into buying a SPOT gps locator. Then at least your love ones will know that you are doing ok all day and they will know exactly where you are at with Google earth maps. They work with out cell service and will work anywhere in the US. I have had mine for a few years know and it is great to know that if something goes bad, someone will come to me.

my girl knows that wheeling (or working on wheeling vehicles) is an all day affair. Even if i say i'll be home in the early afternoon, she just shakes her head and says "no you wont". She knows that if i dont come home that night something happened but not to worry. I have enough supplies and wilderness knowledge to be self sufficient for quite a while. So one night, no big deal, but if she hasn't heard from someone about me and the situation by the next night, then she has my permission to send in the search party.

Might be a good time to start a new thread on the subject. I've used the original SPOT (6 yrs ago) but it had serious short comings and haven't used one since. I've been waiting for more options and improvements, and it looks like the DeLorme is worth serious consideration. Ya, it's expensive and there's a subscription, but considering what we spend on our builds and fixes, it is relative pocket change - for peace of mind.

The new Delorme Inreach Explorer was just released this past month. I've been casually watching the Inreach products but wanted something with a GPS build directly in. Looks like the GPS function is somewhat rudimentary compared to a standalone GPS, but still looks cool. I may pick one of these up.

As for the SPOT, I hate devices that have terrible customer service and frustrating web sites.... one thing that's consistent with these devices is owners' commenting on how they loathe these two things. I've passed on a SPOT because of this.

The inreach looks promising but at double the initial and double subscription price, I'll stick to my 7 year old spot, is far from perfect but it does work.

Same with us. My wife learned LOOONG ago that there is normal time, and "four wheeling time". So if I tell her we'll be back at a certain time, she knows to expect ~4hrs extra...even on a good day.

The other thing is knowing and trusting those that you are going out with. For the most part, my wife knows the people I wheel with pretty well, and shares the same trust in them that I do. We call home as soon as we can if it's been a long day. But as long as we haven't made the news...she's pretty chill about everything!

Glad all was well. As for those spots my fil has one and he likes it when it works, lol. He has only had a few smaller issues with his. I love the idea but am waiting until I have more free cash. My 10 month old is sucking it up pretty good. Little booger. Lolhttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/03/7uju8eqe.jpg

I have an older NOAA device. It's emergency only, no text. The battery cannot be replaced so when it dies it dies (you can test the battery before heading out). It will send a call for help and GPS location. Emergency use only. I can't text the wife on it but she knows if we get in real trouble I can use it. It's mostly for hiking, when we do the grand canyon and venture off the corridor trails it's a little bit of insurance. At least they will be able to find the bodies.
