Time to buy a winch (finally, eh?). Got permission to get one as my b-day present. But, as with several others it seems, I'm having trouble deciding.

Here's a couple that I'm giving serious consideration to:

1. Tabor (by Warn), 9K, roller fairlead, $500
2. Superwinch EPi 9.0, roller fairlead, $570

There's a Ramsey Patriot 8000 in the $675 range. And some other Ramsey REP's more in line with prices of options 1 and 2, but I understand the type of motor in those is somewhat less desireable than in the others???

The "cheap" Warn M8000 appears to be $640, and only has the Hawes fairlead. Not such a great deal after all if roller is about $100 to buy separate???

Any comments on options 1 or 2? Prices are just relative references from an online shop...just to compare the winches.

I saw that 4Wheel Parts had some pretty good deals on Mile Marker winches in the new Off Road Adventures book. I think that those are the winches that the military uses so they are probably pretty good. They had pretty cheap prices also compared to Warn's.

Scott Maiden's got an 8274 for sale for $500 - that's a great price for a real strong winch if it's in good shape.

I have a MileMarker E9000 that worked great the times I've used it. I used it underwater for about 10 minutes and it never let up. It was completely submerged and worked like a charm. That was the convincing test for me. I got it at 4wheelparts for around $450 with the mounting plate included (i think they were running some sort of deal at the time for the free plate). I would recommend Milemarker anytime.

I have a MileMarker 9000 and have been very happy with it. Fourwheelparts had a deal that gave it an unlimited lifetime warranty. Paid approx $450 with plate and fairlead. I've beat it up pretty bad and it still keeps going. It sat underwater at Sycamore creek for a couple of minutes and worked underwater. I checked and nothing seemed to get into the case... so far... so good!

The only drawback is that the linespeed is not the fastest, but, I give it a good rating for toughness.
