Ok, I finally got me a rebuildable 4.0. Actually I think its still good, at least it tried to fire up before I pulled it. But back to the subject. Does anyone out there know of where and how much I could get a rebuild kit and a place that does good machine work.

Now on the kit, I am looking for a performance style kit, like the upgrade pistons, rods, bearings... I am also looking into a more performance head work, but I am very interested in Hesco's new alum head :D, if only I could get a price on it

Also, what is a good upgrade for the cam, I have heard that you can't go very far from the stock, but is there a better one?

My goal here is to get a few more ponies out of a Renix 4.0. I am trying to get just over 200hp just on the motor side. I already have a Borla header on the way and the rest of the exhaust has been done. The air intake and TB has also been upgraded, so it's time for the motor.

Any help/ideas would be greatfull. But I still have a good amount of time before I start on this project luckily, but I am trying to get all th info and prices I can before I start.

Thanks,
John L.

You should just stroke it to 4.5 or 4.7L. You can actually do that with a lot of stock Jeep engine parts. You can use a crankshaft from a 258 with shorter push rods from the same engine. You can then add a performance cam shaft. You will have to have the block machine and the pistons bored a tad. You can still use the 4.0L injectors, but if you are doing the whole thing might as well add some in from a Ram or a Mustang 5.0. Of course there are many other things that have to happen with this also, but you kind of see the picture. And if you can do most of the work yourself then it will cost you a great deal less than actually buying a stroker kit. Do some searches on the web you should come up with some good info.

I have thought about a stroker kit, but I don't like the prices everyone wants for them, granted they are "complete kits". But I guess if I can find one in my price range, then that might be the way to go. I don't like piecing things together, unless it is something I know and can do in my sleep, and I would just prefer to have a kit.

As for injectors, those can be done anytime, and I have done some research on them and I found that the 5.0 are the way to go, and a hell-of-a lot cheaper then stockers, go figure the upgrade is cheaper. The only reason I haven't done that is I haven't done a lot of research on fuel pumps, and I am not sure if a stock pump can handle larger injectors, granted I don't plan on going much bigger.

I was wanting all of the power I could get out of the 4.0/4.7, but lately I have been leaning on more reliable and economic. The gas prices have been killing me and the XJ is my best for mpgs and I wanna keep it that way.

Well, this is what I have found just for the basic kit. Some of these have more things in them then the others and some are for more performance then the others, I beleive the Hesco kit is the most complete and has the most power.

Hescosc.com - $2270
accuratepower.com - $1775
strokerkits.com - $750
speedomotive.com - $675
