Well, where do I start?

Thursday my 10 year old son, Danny Jr. "ran away" to his school with 3 packs of peanut butter crackers and a quarter in his pocket, saying he was going to live on the street and be a detective to earn money. As funny or cute as this may seem, the reason for his running away is not. He said he was afraid he was going to be "tortured". This was to be the precursor to much more.

The weekend before, his bio mom had just shown up from North Dakota, demanding that I drop what I was doing so she could see him. I didn't agree, but being who I am, I let it slide and let him spend the night with her. This woman is NOT by any means a nice person... She's very "dark"...

School started Monday, with AIMS testing, a new aid for him, and the newly awakened fears and thoughts of how things used to be when he lived with her. The stress of all this combined led to what Dr's are calling a "psychotic episode". He said he was hearing voices, singing in his ears, and it took 3 adults to restrain him. We took him to the ER and we, with the on-call hospital psychologist, decided that maybe he should be hospitalized for observation...

He now sits in the Bio Behavioral Unit at Phoenix Children's Hospital for no less than a week, but no determination has been made as to how long his stay will be. I feel so helpless right now...

To top everything off, my 4 year old son, Logan had a small lump on the back of his neck that worried mom more than me. She made an appointment with the Dr. and it turns out to be a swollen lymph gland, one of many that are swollen in his body. His neck, underarms, and groin area all have swollen glands. The Dr prescribed antibiotics, in hopes that it is just some type of minor infection, but also gave us the worst case scenario... Leukemia. We are praying to our God that it's NOT the latter.

We hope that you would all say a prayer to rid Danny of his demons and for the Lord to heal Logan's body...

God bless you all...

Dan,

It is so heartbreaking to read about what your family is going through. I know how helpless you feel when stuff is happening to your kids. I am so sorry, and pray to whatever powers that be that your kids will be okay. My heart goes out to you.

I want to thank everybody that's replied with thier warm wishes and I know things will be ok for both of them, as they are both watched over closely by our Lord, Jesus Christ. It just kills me to have to be so far away from Danny Jr when he needs me. I've been sitting at my desk all day, a vegetable in the sense that I can do nothing but pray that the Lord will put these demons out of my son so I can have him back. Gather in heart and prayer and our sons will be healed of thier ails...

The Bible states, "Where there are two or more gathered in My name, there I am also..."

Dan, as the others have also noted. If you need anything up here in Phoenix just let us know. I have extra room in the house and I know others do also if you need a place to crash up here. Or if you just need a place to get away and have a couple cold ones and some cheap conversation we are all here for ya.

I'm so sorry to hear about all that is going on. I will pray for you and your family.
I know it will all get better even though it seems like it never will. Be strong and keep your head and your children will follow your lead.
God Bless.

I spoke with the Docs for Danny Jr and it seems that he is making some progress. They said that he's becoming more socially engaging. They upped the dose of one of the meds they're trying, because he was still hearing voices. But, all in all things were starting to look up. The problem we've noticed in the past with him and meds is that the meds would work for about a week, like night and day, then all of a sudden, the effects would drop off as if he was on nothing at all... Frustrating to say the least. They have also said that they haven't made a definitive diagnosis as of yet, but they were starting to doubt his previous psychiatrist's diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome and were leaning more towards Bipolar Disorder, which presents itself sometimes with some of the same symptoms...

Our insurance is being good to us, too. We feared the worst, as we knew this stay wasn't going to be cheap (We figured somewhere in the higher 5 digit range...). We have a flat co-pay of $50 a day... :D

The prayers are starting to pay off though... Keep them coming, and THANK YOU ALL.

Good to hear that the docs are making headway and getting things figured out.
Also good to know that insurance is doing a good job, it is a shame that when we have to go to the doc in the back of minds we think is insurance gonna cover this?

Yeah, Dan that is good news boss. If they are able to pin it down to Bi-polar then there are some excellent treatment methods for him out there.

Ditto with Jon on the fact that insurance is stepping up. And again pardner if there is anything that you need from any of us just email, PM or Call.

How is the little one doing?

Logan's doing great...That's the thing, he doesn't act like there's anything wrong. He's still full of energy, a mouthy 4 year old that runs rampant with the 5 month old Black Lab puppy we have... The lumps are still there, but by the way he acts, I think less and less that it's anything serious. He has an appointment at the end of this week, when, if the swelling on the glands hasn't gone down, they'll probably do some bloodwork.

I may end up taking someone up on the offer for sleeping on the couch sometime this week. It's getting unbearable to be away from Danny Jr, even though he drives me NUTS when he's home (Typical of most 10 year olds...)

That's great about Logan.

So does anyone know exactly where this hospital is at in town? That way we can provide some closer lodging for Dan if he needs it so that he doesn't have to fight traffic with the rest of us mice to see his son when he comes up here.

I'm probably about 10 to 15 minutes from Thomas and the 51 on I-17 and Peoria.

My couch will be taken up the next few days though. How long will he be there, has there been any mention? If he is still there next week, I'll be home Monday by 7pm and then will be off the next few days after that.

I wish I could help sooner but I have a friend here the next few days (today and tomorrow) but I have training from 3pm to midnight through Friday. I guess if you can get here sometime in the AM on Friday I can help. Will be wheeling Saturday though and then Sunday evening I have to leave on a trip.

Make sence??? I just woke up if it doesn't, and I'll use that excuse. :D :p

So far they're just saying that the"typical" stay is 5-7 days, and he's been there since late Friday night. Not quite sure if he's what they would consider a typical case... If he's there into next week, I'll get in touch with you for sure. I can't thank you enough for your kind offer.

No, it's not funny, that's what brothers do when they are not missing each other.

I'm on the South side of Cave Creek, not all that close but a straight shot down Scottsdale Road to the 101 to the 51 to Thomas. I have a guest house, one bedroom with bath and private entrance. You are welcome to stay anytime it is not booked with people from back East which is not very often. Send me an e-mail or PM.

Ya know now that you mention it... It's NOT all that funny... I have the scars ALL OVER my head to prove how "unfun" it was with 2 brothers that were 5 and 6yrs older than me!!!

It's a bit of a drive, and I HATE I-17 (unless it's changed since I lived there...), but Cave Creek is pretty nice. Not to mention MORE than accomodating if Peggy and Logan end up coming... I'll definitely keep all of these offers in mind when I speak with Peggy tonight... Thank you all and God bless you all...

Well, Peggy only has Saturday off and works 11am-7pm Friday, so it may end up just being a daytrip for us. Peggy's used to doing these turnaround trips (almost every week) because her mom is in a nursing home on a vent out in Sun City. Thank you all for the offers for this weekend. If he doesn't come home this weekend (and I doubt he will), I may take someone up on their offer for the week to come...

Dan Jr is making progress, one day at a time.

Once again, thank you all for your prayers and generosity. They are working miracles.

For what its worth, our prayors are there (recovering from a short stiff bout of the flu (gota love codine and albuterol :D ) just read as best I could).

PCH is an incredible hospital (was just there with my daughter, still trying to get computer to open freaking MRI file). Having spent the whole day there, makes you feel blessed if your kid is just about anything better than inoperable cancer (I spoke with several parents and staff and heard stories that would make a rock cry). As I said before, PCH is an incredible hospital that amazes me with the intricacies it included in its devotion to the young. From what I have experienced, IMHO anyone who goes there is in some of the best of hands.
I wish there was more I could do for you (whole bunch of personal/business crap going on and am going out of town soon ). Have you inquired with McDonald house (they have a whole new center from what I hear)?

Our payors and best wishes

Just to let everybody know, Logan's lymphs are A-OK... Peggy took him for a follow-up late last week and the Dr. told her not to be concerned. She said that if, in 6 weeks, they had not gone down, they would do blood work. Peggy, of course, didn't like that answer, because if it ended up being serious, that would be 6 weeks that Logan could have been being treated. So, they took blood and called us yesterday with the best news since all this with my two boys started: Logan is healthy and absolutely NOTHING abnormal came back in is bloodwork!!!

Dan Jr is doing well, although he's still in PCH. They're trying different meds and combinations of meds and seem to be making some progress. We still haven't been able to get away to come see him, but I talk to him almost every night. Last night, I couldn't tell whether he was doped up or sad and just plain missing us. All in all, he's doing well, though.

Thanks for all the prayers and words of encouragement.

Lithobid (Lithium based)
Seroquel
Risperdal

My son is coming home!!! We have a big surprise for him too... We just traded our Seadoo in on a 2001 18' Monterey open bow with the Volvo Penta I/O (with 4.3L Chevy engine). Now we can all go out together, rather than leaving someone behind on the beach...
