Subject: I hate my driveline
OKOK, i was driving to sedona a couple weeks ago to wheel when my u-joint got pissed at me and quit working right and tore off a strap and bolt. I took it to a local shop and they said they could probably just drill and tap the bolt and put a new strap kit on. then they decided they couldnt drill it and that i had to buy a new pinion yoke, strap kit, and u-joint. I did that and now today they call back and apparently it destroyed the yoke on the driveshaft end as well...he describes it as 'egg shaped' i havent had a chance to go look at it yet, but it probably is. He told me my options were: buy a new driveshaft....and thats it...im thinking this is a good chance to do a SYE and get a driveshaft with CV joints....the only problem being, i have nearly bald tires and not enough money for tires and the drive line. Can anybody think of alternatives to what i have thought of already, that would be cheapish and make my jeep work until about christmas when i will be able to afford my SYE better....being in college i am low on flo....
the options i see are:
SYE & CV driveshaft....
+H.D. SYE from Toybox $350
+CV Driveshaft from Toybox $250
+Labor $too much
replace with another stock driveshaft
+$200
+Labor
+SYE and driveshaft later this year

A "real" driveshaft shop would simply put a new yoke end on the
driveshaft (they weld on, but they can cut them off and weld a
new one on). Typically the yoke is around $25. Seems to me last time
I had a driveshaft shop do this I went out for less than $50.

Subject: Interactive Site
Hello All,
I’m writing this to answer a few questions and describe the defects that have been noted and fixed.
Questions:
What do you mean by interactive?
By this I mean that the members drive the content. As members update their profiles,
enter future runs and then report on them, the content of the website changes without
needing a Webmaster to update the pages.
Is the Interactive website designed to replace or supplement the old website?
Actually both; the interactive pages will replace certain pages; other pages will be
enhanced and included. While the bugs are being worked out, the original pages will
continue to be available.
My vehicle is not listed on the old website, do I need to have it added first to the old
website and then add it to the new?
No, the member profiles and jeep pages of the interactive site are intended to completely
replace the old member pages.
I don’t remember my User Name and Password, how do I log in?
If you haven’t gone to the new website, then you don’t have a User Name. When you
first load the interactive site, you will see a Log On/Join page. You will want to choose
a user name and password; note that these should go in the lower form fields. Since you
are already a member of e-groups, you will want to check the box so that your e-mail
address is not resubmitted to egroups. The upper form fields are for logging in once you
have a user name and password. When you create a new user name or log in, a cookie is
stored on your computer so that you don’t have to log in each time you visit. If you
clear your Internet cache or delete the AzVJC Cookie, then you will be required to log in.
If you can’t remember your user name or password, e-mail either myself or Tom Quinn
and we will retrieve the information and e-mail you.
How do I submit pictures?
I’m still working on this. There will be a gallery, however we can easily run out of server
space if we treat it like Photopoint. When the trail report pages are complete, I will have
a field for a link to Photopoint. The gallery will be intended to add visually to trail reports
and Jeep descriptions.
What else is planned?
Next on my list is to get the Gallery working. After that, I intend to start working on trips,
trails and trip reports. This will include a calendar of upcoming trips and events. Once
this has been complete, I will begin working on some e-mail driven message boards.
After that, who knows?
Defects:
Members attempting to log in using Netscape were experiencing problems joining, logging in and
entering their profile and jeep information. This was caused by some client side vbScript, which I
have replaced with JavaScript. The object not defined errors and the Blank Edit Profile pages were
caused by this problem.
Members reported problems with entering profile or jeep information containing single quotes.
I’ve added code to store single quotes as a different character.
Early yesterday, after joining, members weren’t able to enter their profile. This was caused by
a missing parameter in a query and has been fixed.
Some fields when left blank were causing an error (“Field 'dat_Members.WebTitle' cannot be a
zero-length string”) I’ve implemented a fix for the known fields. If you receive an error like this,
please let me know so that I may fix it.
There were also some problems early relating to particular fields not getting updated. This also
has been fixed.
There were also some random errors during the day today as I was “learning” Javascript and
tinkering with things to get them working. I believe as of right now it should be working for
just about everyone. I’ve tested it on the Win32 platform with IExploder and on a Linux
platform with Netscape.
Well, I think that’s about it, if anyone experiences any problems or has any more questions,
send me an EMail. Thanks for your patience,
- Mike Chatfield

unfortunately, there are no real security devices to prevent theft. if
someone wants your jeep, they will get it. clubs and the such can be
removed so easily and alarms take 2 seconds to disable. all they do is try
and stall the theif, but when u hear a car alarm, do u ever look? one good
security device it by clifford. it is like a second key for your ignition.
everytime before you start your jeep, your have to put a little pin into a
slot, then turn the ignition on. what this does is prevent the jeep from
being stolen unless the pin was used cause it allows juice to flow from the
battery to the engine. even if someone tried to jumpstart your jeep it
wouldn't work. but the only security device i have on my tj is lowjack. if
someone steals my baby, i call the cops and give them my vin number, which
activates a remote sensor buried inside my dash to give off a signal which
is picked up by the computers in cop cars and they can locate my vehicle to
within 10 feet. the sensor is very tiny and impossible to know about unless
you own the vehicle. the clifford and the lowjack are the only security
devices i would recomend.

I agree. I used to build driveshafts for a living and a good driveshaft shop
can turn the old yoke off the shaft tube and weld a new one on. We used to
do it all the time. Just make sure you pay for them to balance it. Getting
it just "close enough" will ruin u-joints.

what I do when I am going to leave the CJ7 in my garage for a while, strap a
chain around the clutch, steering wheel and rollcage, that way they will
have to cut the chain, and unlock the steering wheel. One thing for sure,
thief's are into this and if they are going to try, we have the odds to
lose, so always try to have your Jeep close to you, never leave the keys on,
bla bla bla... there are great ideas as mess the solenoids and add an extra
one with a switch under the dash hidden, so it wont start unless you turn it
on, or tricks like that that will make them jump into the hood to turn a
Jeep on, what makes it harder. A lock in the hood I'm sure can help too.

A poor man's security device for a TJ -
This is for all of us who spent all their money on their TJ and can't afford
an alarm-
Open your glove box, disconnect the safety strap that holds the door open.
Look at the fuse panel located directly behind the glove box. There will be a
10 amp fuse that should be labeled #11- PDC Coils next to it. Pull the fuse,
put it in your pocket and go away. The jeep will not start without it. It
controls a few things, (all of which I am not sure, and neither was the idiot
at the dealership) one of which is the fuel pump. The PDC is believed to
stand for Power Distribution Center (which I think is part of the big fuse
box under the hood with the relays).
Anyway, if a thief has enough time to sit there and go through your jeep with
the insight and logic it would take to find this tiny missing fuse, you
shouldn't have parked it there in the first place.
Oh yea, one more very important thing, keep your fingers crossed that no
thief's subscribe to the club's mailing list.

My anti-theft device is similar. I have an electric fuel pump installed on
my CJ7, and I have a small, inconspicuous, unlabled switch underneath the
dash that turns the fuel pump off. So I just turn the fuel pump off
whenever I leave my Jeep unattended. Should someone decide to steal my
jeep, they'd get about two blocks away before the gas in the carburetor ran
out.

Make the Jeep really obvious looking. I know you wouldn't want to mess up a new
vehicle, but things like giant Warn winch stickers (ref Joe West) make a Jeep
stand out. That's usually all you need to keep a would-be thief at bay.
There's a program called the Az Auto Theft Authority (or something like that)
that distributes stickers that, when placed on the vehicle, give the police
authorization to pull the vehicle over between 1am-5am if it is on the streets.

Not as though it's anything to get all excited about - because of
their STELLAR customer service (I've seen nothing impressive in both
the Tucson and Tempe stores). But, Desert Rat is opening a "new"
store in Tucson. I noticed the other day that the old Dick Cepek
store on 22nd and Kolb (NE corner) that closed not too long ago now
has a sign that reads "Coming Soon... Desert Rat".
Thought I'd pass along the 411.

I agree with Tom. 95% of the money I've spent on parts for the TJ has been through mail order. It's usually substantially cheaper and overall I've found the non-local vendors to be more help when I need it despite the fact they are not local. Other than OR Fab I avoid the local shops like the plague.

as well. I don't understand this tactic. What is the point of going
to an off-road shop if they're going to charge you shipping? Chances
are you can get it cheaper, with shipping, from mail order. If you
know what you want there's no gain. If you need advice, that's why
they are there. It just doesn't make sense though. It isn't my
fault they happened to be out of stock on that item when I needed
it. I'm in strong favor of supporting local shops, but not if
they're going to charge me like I mail ordered it.

Dan,
The tire market is so competetive that if you shop wisely your better off buying locally. If you do buy mail order your best bet is National Tire and Wheel since they are associated with Sears for road hazard claims, etc.
I bought my 35" Goodyear MT/R's from a Goodyear shop. This spring when they had just been released the Goodyear shops had better luck locating them. I still got prices from Discount which they beat after I told them I had shopped around. Don't be shy to tell the outlet your getting other quotes.

I ordered my slick fit Advanced Adapter headers from AA today. They were
actually cheaper going through AA instead of Four Wheelers Supply, after
shipping and all. I am going to keep the rams horn stock manifolds for a
while incase these puppies crack. I'll keep everyone posted on how they
work out.
On a side note Hedman Hedders makes a header 69670-6. This is a HTC
coated header set for CJ-5 with small block Chevy. The HTC coat looks
like chrome but holds in the the head like a ceramic coat would. Hedman
guarantees the HTC coating against fading or bluing for 5 years!! Hedman
guarantees the headers for life!! The down side is they are a special
order with everyone I talked to. They want my money up front, not a
credit card. I talked to Hedman this morning and they said it would take
at least 3 weeks to build the headers plus a week to ship them to the
mail order store I bought them from, plus a week for the mail order shop
to send them back to me. I don't have 5 or 6 weeks to wait for my
exhaust system :-(
Thanks to Kevin and T.J for the advise on the header situation.

Thanks for your patience,
- Mike Chatfield

everytime before you start your jeep, your have to put a little pin into a

being stolen unless the pin was used cause it allows juice to flow from the
battery to the engine. even if someone tried to jumpstart your jeep it
wouldn't work. but the only security device i have on my tj is lowjack. if
someone steals my baby, i call the cops and give them my vin number, which
activates a remote sensor buried inside my dash to give off a signal which
is picked up by the computers in cop cars and they can locate my vehicle to

you own the vehicle. the clifford and the lowjack are the only security

I agree with Tom. 95% of the money I've spent on parts for the TJ has been through mail order. It's usually substantially cheaper and overall I've found the non-local vendors to be more help when I need it despite the fact they are not local. Other than OR Fab I avoid the local shops like the plague.

to an off-road shop if they're going to charge you shipping? Chances
are you can get it cheaper, with shipping, from mail order. If you
know what you want there's no gain.

Since we are on the subject of shops and mail order...has anyone
bought a tire/wheel combination through mail order. Even Desert Rat
has an ad in some of the 4by mags with prices on tires cheaper than
in their shop! I can get the same tire (if not bigger) on the same
rim through mail order (plus about $50 for shipping) for still less
than in a shop. I know the drawbacks are time, possible shipment
damage, returns, etc...but has anyone had any experience at all?

Subject: CJ-5 exhaust

Yes but you have to have a Red Card(98 KUPD) in order to get the 25% off.
