Subject: Re: TR 9-30-00: CHANGES to Rocker Panel Pass
All,
Sounds like a good trail to go, however, I want to
upgrade my vehicle's power steering system (using AGR
p/s box & pump) prior to taking it out on a good
trail. Secondly, this will be a good time to test my
new TeraLow 4:1 T/C (self-installed). Unfortunately,
the AGR parts will not be here until tomorrow
(Thursday) and I will try to complete the swap out by
Friday night so I can run this trail with you guys.
For now, let's go by ear. BTW, I've never run this
trail before so I am anxious to make it.
Thanks,
Tom

I've driven Rocker Panel a few times. Although my CJ isn't trail
worthy right now, I wouldn't mind riding along with the group and
show the way. If I can get my fuel cell lines plumbed up by then my
CJ will be trail driveable though and I'd be happy to show the way.
FWIW, the trail is really pretty tame with the exception of one ~100
yard section that's rock crawling. Last year I ran both Trail42 and
Rocker Panel Pass on the same day without incident. We hit darkness
coming off RPP but I couldn't imagine it would take all day if you
started around 8am. If you're looking for a long rock crawling
trail, RPP isn't it.

Jeff --
My '68 had a 3" homegrown body lift installed when I rescued it from
the previous owner. Steering column might cause a problematic angle
but since you're doing everything from scratch I wouldn't worry about
it. I think my CJ's body lift was installed because the SM420 sat so
high he didn't want to chop out the floor boards to make it fit, so
he opted for raising the body. I've since removed the 3" lift nd
replaced the pucks with stock 3/4" bushings and I'm much happier with
it. The '72 body lift kit should be fine, and you may end up with
more pucks than you can use. My '68 doesn't have as many body mounts
as later models that I've seen.
Wow, this is going to be some beast ... SOA (5.5") plus a 2" body
lift. You planning on running tank tracks on it too? :)
Hey Jeff, on another note, do you have any need for my old 10gal
driver's side mounted gas tank? I never heard how you were handling
fuel supply on your beast. If you know anyone that needs/wants one
let me know. I'm replacing mine with a tub mounted fuel cell.

Subject: V8 fuel delivery questions
Hey all--
Ok I'm trying to figure out the plumbing for my new fuel cell and I
could use some help from fellow jeepers.
What is the standard fuel line size for V8 jeeps- 1/4" or 3/8"? 1/4"
is what I'm running on my V6 now but I'm replacing the fuel pump with
an electric pump and only want to do this once. Seems the norm is
3/8" line for a 350 replacement for my 225. Stupid question ... hard
fuel line size is measured in OD not ID, right?
Now on to fuel pumps ... anyone replaced their mechanical pump with
an electric? If so, is this something I can pick up at any parts
store or should I spend the $80 for a Holley pump (seems overkill).
Most of the race shops say 3/8" line is what the electrics use but
they only think in terms of 'race' and 'streetrod' which doesn't do
us rockcrawlers any good :) Are there any problems I'll have if I
replace my mech fuel pump with an electric? Trail replacement is a
big factor so having an electric pump appeals to me.
Any help here would be great.

Dear Fellow Duner,
Some of you have heard about the middle of the dunes being closed. We have
very little facts at
this time and should know more on Friday of this week - please be patient. As
soon as we have more
than rumors, we'll send you another email.
Now the reason for this email.
The following is an email that was sent to the ASA today. It is self
explanatory. YOUR ACTION IS
NEEDED NOW. WE HAVE BEEN LAZY FOR TOO LONG AND NOW IT IS TIME TO PAY THE
PRICE.
************************************************** ****************
TO: The California off-road community.
FROM: Roy Denner, Recreation Representative on the BLM California Desert
District Advisory Council
SUBJECT: OFF-ROADER APATHY! (DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME READING THIS)
As you may know, the Desert District Advisory Council (DAC) is composed of
15 people from various interest groups who advise the BLM on management of
the California Desert District. The California Desert District covers
portions of 8 counties and includes over 10 million acres of public land.
As the recreation representative on the DAC, I have attended the Council
meetings and have reported events having significant impact to the off-road
community.
Probably the most significant activity having impact on OHV recreation ever
to happen is the current effort by the BLM to develop a National Off-Highway
Vehicle Management Strategy. I reported on this after the last DAC meeting
and provided methods and contacts for comment. I just learned that the
comments are running 5 to 1 against motorized activities. I can only
conclude that the environmental organizations really care and the off-road
community doesn't give a damn!
On October 21 & 22 in Barstow, the DAC will be holding its next meeting.
Items on the agenda include:
1. Update on the National OHV Management Strategy.
2. Recreation Fee District Policy - A plan to charge fees at all recreation
areas.
3. A briefing on the lawsuit by the Center for Biological Diversity - an
attempt to close down the Imperial Sand Dunes.
4. Development of a California Desert District Non-Profit Association to
assist in development of an action plan.
I am only one of 15 people sitting on the DAC. More importantly, I AM THE
ONLY RECREATION REPRESENTATIVE who speaks for off-road recreation (vehicle
and non-vehicle). If the sad response to the request for input on the new
OHV Management Strategy is to be my guidline, I AM WASTING MY TIME!!
OFF-ROAD RECREATIONISTS DON'T CARE!! And while I'm doing my job, I'm
destroying my credibility with the BLM.
So, here's my ultimatum (don't laugh too hard if you're still with me)!
Unless I see an overwhelming turnout of off-road recreationist in Barstow on
the 20th & 21st of October to provide support for our form of recreation, I
will assume that I am not representing the off-road community in a proper
manner and will resign from the DAC. I am not the kind of person who can
sit quietly on this council while opportunities for off-road recreation are
continually being eroded from all directions. I spend too much time and
lose too much sleep over this situation to be representing the off-road
community in the wrong way. I'm sure a more complacent, non-emotional,
representative can be found. There are obviously lots of you out there. My
family will be delighted to have me back.
Incidentally, I am the DAC representative on the Imperial Sand Dunes
Recreation Area Technical Review Team - an organization that advises the BLM
on how user fees should be expended. Since I would no longer be a DAC
representative, I would obviously not be the representative from the DAC on
the ISDRA TRT.

Subject: ignition Help???
Hello Gang,
I am finally trying to put in my Super Coil (Accel), and I made sure that I
had the right unit, but the wiring harness that they sold me doesn't look
correct. I double checked to make sure that it was the correct part and it
is. Has anyone put in a upgrade coil in a 4.0 FI engine in an XJ?? I know
that the OEM coil has two pegs on the bottom so that when the coil is placed
in it will make contact in the connections in the base. But with the Accel
coil it has the pos/neg connection on the top of the coil. I am in need of
help with this, for I have never done this before, or know anyone that has.
Any help will be greatly appreciated......
thank you,
Casper

Do not use 1/4". Common is 5/16", with 3/8 showing up now and then.

DO NOT buy a cheapo pump. I ended up doing that and having a failure
during last years' Jamboree. The NAPA pump I bought to replace it (Carter
mfg.) is doing just fine for about $40.00

No. Just get a fuel pump block off plate for the engine block. Place the
pump as close to the fuel tank as possible--you want it to push the fuel
(this reduces vapor lock). Please use a fuel pump relay (yes, they are
pricy at $15.00) and an ATO 7amp fuse.

Yes, carry a spare.

Subject: WARNING: Metcalf Motorsports (LONG)
Hello,
I just thought I'd share my recent experiences with Metcalf Motorsports with the 300+ members of the Arizona Virtual Jeep Club and fellow Jeepers of the rec.autos.makers.jeep+willys newsgroup in the hope that some of you will not experience what I have and maybe they will get their act together.
After reading some good reviews at www.rockcrawler.com , talking with a couple owners of the kit, and having a good chat with Gary Anderson at Metcalf I ordered the flush crossmember & 2" motor mount kit last Tuesday. I was assured by Gary that my crossmember would be finished and shipped on Friday Sept 22nd.
On Tuesday September 26th I left a voicemail for Metcalf in the morning and also in the late afternoon and did not receive a response. I was hoping to get some tracking numbers.
This morning September 27th I once again left messages without any response. I emailed them around lunch but didn't hear back all day. So on the fourth message this afternoon I finally stated that if they didn't get back to me today I would stop payment in the morning.
I called them a little after 5 PM today and as I was leaving the fifth message Stacy from Metcalf picked up the phone. We talked for a short while and she stated that 2 boxes shipped at the beginning of this week which was already later than promised. She gave me 2 tracking numbers. I checked the status online and the scheduled delivery date is Oct 2!
Throughout this entire experience I have remained calm and given Metcalf the benefit of the doubt. I know from personal experience how unorganized a small startup company can get. 5 phone calls and 1 email to get a response is just inexcusable. You can make your own judgement as to why they did what they did.
I had promised those in the group that I would post an update on my impressions of the Metcalf kit. Unfortunately the TJ will probably sit in the garage for another week with the new 2" body lift installed, but no matching motor mounts and crossmember. So I will have to miss this weekends trail runs. No matter how good the quality of their product may be, at this point I would warn all of you to find another vendor. Its really a shame that a company with so many promising products could shoot themselves with poor service.
This reminds of what happened with Rusty of Rusty's Offroad. He lost literally hundreds of potential buyers due to the experiences that fellow Jeepers shared on the rec.autos.makers.jeep+willys newsgroup. The internet is an amazing resource. The information obtained in these forums has been priceless as I have built up my 1999 TJ. I was really interested in a new product that they had not yet released. It was a replacement gas tank with a sloped back end, and it could be installed in the stock position, or lifted 1 or 2" if you had a body lift. At this point I can say I won't be buying one. You can check out Metcalf's products at:
www.metcalfmotorsports.com
I have sent a CC: of this message to Metcalf Motorsports. I truly hope they can get their act together. I will also post a followup with pictures and a review of the actual product once it is installed.
Happy trails to all of you!

All,
Sounds like a good trail to go, however, I want to
upgrade my vehicle's power steering system (using AGR
p/s box & pump) prior to taking it out on a good

Later,

Hey Jon, we'll be there on Saturday. Regarding the GC. Apparently the dealer gave him a good deal on the trade, but he was bummed when he heard there was a possible buyer. He did say he may try to get it back, because it will be 1-2 months before his yukon arrives. Do what you need to do regarding this, and I'm sorry it didnt work out. If he does get it back, he'll contact you. See ya Saturday.

Subject: [az_vjc] Saturday Run
I will lead a run on FR42 on Saturday. This is a fun run with some good sandy hill challenges and great scenery.
MEET?: The Pay Station on Bartlett Lake Road
WHEN?; 8AM departure from the Pay Station - we will air down at the trail head
WHAT?: Class 3 trail in some spots. Some steep and loose hills with lots of moguls. MINIMUM OF LIMITED SLIP IN THE REAR IS RECOMMENDED OR BE PREPARED TO BE STRAPPED.
HOW LONG?: Should be done by noon - before the real heat sets in. Plan on a lunch stop around 11:30 at the play hills on Indian Springs wash.
For those who want, the run will return after lunch via the 11 Mile Wash which ends up in the Rio Verde area about 8 miles from Forrt McDowell on SR87. Or, you can head back the way you came.
Bring lots of H2O and lunch.
Please let me know if you plan to attend.
DIRECTIONS TO BARTLETT LAKE:
Take Pima Road or Scottsdale Road NORTH to the end (Scottsdale Rd actually changes names to Tom Darlington Rd. Turn Right by the Shell Station onto Cave Creek Rd.). They both end at E. Cave Creek Road in Carefree. Go East to the Bartlett Lake turnoff. Make the right hand turn on Bartlett Lake Rd and go 14 miles to the Pay Station.

If you're through laughing at my ultimatum, and are not too busy with other
more important issues to give up a day in your life to help keep public
lands open for use by the public, you might consider making the relatively
short drive to Barstow on Saturday, October 21st. That is the actual DAC
meeting day. The public is also welcome on the Field Tour which will take
place on Friday, October 20. Information follows:
MEETING PLACE: City Council Chambers at City Hall
220 East Mountain View
Barstow, California
Saturday, Oct. 21, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
go west on Main St. and rt. on East Mountain View
HOTEL WHERE DAC MEMBERS ARE STAYING:

1511 East Main St.
Barstow, CA
(760) 256-5673
For more information, or copies of the agenda, call Doran Sanchez at the BLM
CA Desert District Office: (909) 697-5220.
If it doesn't cause too much of an impact on your time, please consider
forwarding this message to other off-roaders who probably won't care either.

Yes, tubing is O.D., hose is I.D.

Yes.

I am getting ready to start to install the Warn hub conversion on my 89 YJ. I have the new rotors that I need but I need to have the center hole machined out to a little over 3.5". Does anyone have a contact to get this done at a reasonable price and time frame? I have one lead I will check out tomorrow if that fizzles I may need another. Thanks for the help.
