What kind of prep work did you do?
My neighbors son has had it in his Jeep for about 18 months and it looks as
good as the day he put it in...except that its dirty.
Herculiner and Durabak are identical substances that are made by the same
company.

Support slips for growth initiatives
Kathleen Ingley
The Arizona Republic
Sep. 24, 2000
Support has slipped for two of the state's hottest ballot measures,
which
would put new curbs on growth and protect some state trust land,
according
to an Arizona Republic poll.
Propositions 202 and 100 would still pass overwhelmingly, though, if the
election were held today.
Six of 10 Arizonans surveyed are in favor of the main points of
Proposition
202, the Citizens Growth Management Initiative. That's a notch below
earlier
polls, which put support levels around 70 percent.
Proposition 202 would require local governments to set growth
boundaries,
based on 10-year population forecasts, and to charge developers the full
cost of all the new city services for their projects.
Voters like Mike Will, who lives in north Phoenix, see the initiative as
a
welcome fence against the relentless march of subdivisions into wildlife
habitat.
"I don't want to see Phoenix built out like San Diego is," he said.
Peoria resident Dorothy Skeen, though, lines up firmly on the "no" side.
"I'm a Realtor and my husband is in construction," she explained. "It's
a
matter of economics. Without expansion, where are we going to go?"
Lila Schwartz, who chairs the pro-Proposition 202 Citizens for Growth
Management, blamed slipping support on a recent barrage of TV and radio
ads
from opponents with "a huge amount of money."
Real estate and construction interests are leading the drive to defeat
Proposition 202, while the Sierra Club and the Grand Canyon Trust are
the
biggest contributors in a coalition of environmental and civic groups
backing the measure.
The Republic's survey says 62 percent of registered voters favor the
terms
of Proposition 202, while 23 percent are opposed and 15 percent are
undecided.
Opponents take an upbeat view, seeing the glass as nearly one-quarter
full -
especially since it's an improvement from a poll two months ago showing
just
17 percent opposed.
"If the voters are presented with the negative consequences of this
issue,
they will vote against it," said Spencer Kamps of Arizonans for
Responsible
Planning, the umbrella group fighting Proposition 202.
He contends Proposition 202 would sink the Arizona economy, boost home
prices and create a legal mess, because it would allow anyone to sue to
enforce the law.
Schwartz, on the other hand, argues that once voters are better
informed,
"we can counter the slide in the polls."
She maintains that better growth management would spur the economy, and
she
says lawsuits would be limited to affected parties.
Support is stronger for Proposition 100, a constitutional amendment that
would protect up to 3 percent of trust land - about 270,000 acres - from
development. This measure also would require Congress to change the
federal
law that made Arizona a state in 1912.
Among those surveyed, 67 percent favor Proposition 100, while 20 percent
oppose it and 13 percent are undecided.
The level of support, although down from 73 percent two months ago, is
"terrific," said Jay Heiler, spokesman for the pro-Proposition 100
campaign.
A legal challenge to Proposition 100 kept supporters' strategy on ice
for a
month. But soon, Heiler said, "there will be a full-fledged campaign
visible
to all residents of the state." One theme will be the need to update
Arizona's approach to state trust land.
Those opposing Proposition 100 insist they aren't discouraged by the
latest
poll.
"Without the whole picture, it's not surprising, because preservation is
a
really popular issue in Arizona," said Lori Faeth of The Nature
Conservancy.
Many conservation groups oppose Proposition 100 because of its 3 percent
limit on land to be protected. They want voters to focus on the 97
percent
that wouldn't be covered.
"People will vote no, because it's bad for Arizona," Faeth said.
The statewide telephone poll of 602 registered voters, conducted Sept.
14-18, has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
Demographic breakdowns, which have a higher margin of error, show
support
for both propositions was especially high in Pima County.
Proposition 202, the growth-management initiative, drew relatively less
support from registered Republicans.
Proposition 100, the amendment on trust land, had a strong showing among
those 18-34 years old.

Dion,
I think the shafts with the 297 u-joints came only in '95 YJ's with
ABS. They are hard to find as people who know about this upgrade
snatch them up as fast as they can. These shafts are completely
interchangeable with the smaller u-joint shafts. I was lucky to
find a used one for the driver side of my YJ but I had to buy a new
one for the passenger side.

Of course I'll also have to replace the outer stub as well. Can anyone confirm this? And does anyone have any? If not, I'll start the junkyard search tomorrow. TIA.

Doug et. al.,
I just took my TJ in today for the exact same fix... as well as the fix for
a bad printed circuit board which causes the gages on the TJ to all go to
zero and the airbag light to go on... if any owner of a 97-99 TJ hasn't had
these two fixes retrofitted, you should go do it IMMEDIATELY! To summarize,
the two problems are:
1. Cracked exhaust manifold. Caused by bad design
2. Gages go to zero intermittently... caused by failed printed wiring
board on the back of the gage cluster.

It's up north in Sedona - land of the red rocks.

I wouldn't say that just because you have a Dana 30/35 that it will
break if you attempt a hardcore trail. But your chances of breaking
are better than someone with stronger axles.
Whether or not you'll break an axle depends on many things - not just
which axles you have. Sure, some axles are weaker than others. But
there are other factors that figure into the picture. Tire size is
an obvious one. Torque is another as is how heavy your foot is. Some
times you break an axle because you just put to much torque to a wheel
that doesn't want to budge. Other times, you get out of control and
break something. For example, you pop your front end into the air and
slam it down without backing off the throttle fast enough. If you have
crummy gearing, then you'll be on the gas a bit more and out of control
a bit more which increases your chances of breaking an axle. I'd say
that most of the broken axles I've witnessed were caused by being out
of control.
Your Wrangler - being an '87 - should have the non-C clip version of
the Dana 35 which is stronger than the C-clip version because it doesn't
have the smaller diameter groove for the C-clip. Plus, if you do break
a rear axle, I believe it won't fall out while driving as the C-clip
version would.
My suggestion is to find someone to ride with on some of the hardcore
trails before taking your rig. That will give you a better feel for
how a rig should be equipt to successfully navigate those trails.

Herculiner and Durabak are identical substances that are made by the same

Hi guys!
I just took mine into Darner Chrysler in Mesa this morning... not a single
mention of any problems caused by my modifications... they didn't even bring
it up. It probably helped that I let them know right up front that I was
fully aware that the two problems I was bringing the Jeep in for (Cracked
manifold and gage problem) were COMMON problems... but regardless; they said
thank you sir, we'll have it ready for you this afternoon. I was ready for
a fight, and they didn't even give me a chance. <pout>. <grin>

Doug,
My 99 TJ manifold is cracked too. A friend just had his 99 TJ manifold
replaced under warranty. The new design with the accordion section looks
like it shouldn't crack. I'm going to have to take mine in soon.
Joe, I remember you saying yours was cracked too. If your reading this lets
take both of ours in at the same time so we can double up on them if they
give us any grief about the mods.

as are other emissions related items.
Thought there might be those out there in cyberville that might like to
know. Also...I took it to Pitre (Scottsdale) and they were great about it.
They also flashed my computer for free, to update it, and get rid of a
stalling problem sometimes experience on steep downhills.

Subject: TJ exhaust manifold and Gages Warranty Information
Doug et. al.,
I just took my TJ in today for the exact same fix... as well as the fix for
a bad printed circuit board which causes the gages on the TJ to all go to
zero and the airbag light to go on... if any owner of a 97-99 TJ hasn't had
these two fixes retrofitted, you should go do it IMMEDIATELY! To summarize,
the two problems are:
1. Cracked exhaust manifold. Caused by bad design
2. Gages go to zero intermittently... caused by failed printed wiring
board on the back of the gage cluster.

Joe West

I'll be running the following trails in the Jamboree:
Thu - Lower Terminator

Of course, this depends on my getting my first choice each day. However,
the Lower Terminator run is locked in since I'm the trail leader.
