This time the trail ride is really on! After a series of electrical
problems and steering problems I think the Jeep is ready for the trail
again. I will be pre-running the Pictograph Trail for the Jamboree on
Sunday 9/24.

I haven't been on this trail since 1994. I remember a relatively easy
trail. It has recently been rated 2.5+ so it probably hasn't changed
much. The Pictograph trail is out in the Florence Junction Area. It has
some steep (read blue sky) hill climbs and some rocky washes to play
in. The trail isn't really long so there's the opportunity to do other
things.

Meeting place: Texaco on US60 east of Florence Junction. Look for the
dark blue ZJ with a tire on the roof
Meeting time: 8:30am They say it'll be in the low 90s so a later start
shouldn't be a problem

Bring water, lunch, etc.

Someone on Jeepsunlimited was doing this same swap awhile back.
Seems as tho' he even got the tone rings for the ABS installed on
the 8.8. You may want to take a look there. I think it would be
in the "old Grand Cherokee Forum" you can do a search. I think

Just an FYI for this trip for those that have not heard. I-17 northbound is
down to 1 lane at Black Canyon City due to an accident. Traffic is backed up

If I were you guys, I would start the Gasline road at the Table Mesa road
crossing and go north to Black Canyon City. That way you would hit the
pavement sooner and stop at Rock Springs when you are done!

You can actually pick up the gas line road at New River too..... or if you
really dont want to hit pavement, you can start the gasline road at
WildHorse bar at Lake Pleasant Parkway and Carefree Highway.

FYI

Its true you can have a full locker for only ten bucks! I have been running

If I had a welder and hadn't already installed a lock-right in my front
axle, I probably would go that route. If you have manual locking front hubs
and a 2-low on your transfer case selector, then I think that's a great way
to go. Shifting from 2 to 4 low out on the trail would have just about the
same affect as hitting the 'ol ARB button. I don't think I'd ever do that
in the rear though...

OK, I asked all the questions I was fielded - and here are the answers.

thing he makes, let me know and i'll give you his email address

>
> 1) How much for those wheels? Is there 5 of em? (If you don't answer the
rest of this, I'd like an answer to this one ASAP, since I may buy some
tomorrow)
***4 wheels...$100.00 Cdn

> 2) Brake lines. I'm hearing issues about getting brake lines that fit
onto scout axles. What did you do? Where can I get them from?
***Bring me a set of Pro Comp stainless braided lines for your year of YJ,
the
extended length versions.

> 3) Has something been done to alter the caster on the axles? I don't even
know what this means...what the hell is cater? Apparently the Scout axles
have 0 and that's bad for jeeps.
****The diffs were totally redesigned so they would bolt under a stock YJ.
All
mods to correct spring width, castor (that's the steering angle which allows
your vehicle to travel straight and also brings your wheel back to center
after completing a turn) and steering have been done.

> 4) Does my exhaust have to be routed to the other side? What do I need
for this?
***You may have to modify your exhaust, probably under $75.00.

> 5) Do I need new U-Bolts? Someone said it would be easier to torch them
off and buy new ones.
New U-bolts and heavy duty spring plates are with the diffs and springs, the
U-bolts point up (more clearance).

> 6) Why don't I need a CV driveshaft?
***You won't need aCV shaft, in my Jeep this set up has only a 6 degree
U-joint
angle, no problems, no vibrations.

> 7) Will we have to move the front spring hangers and shackle hangers out?
Or is the tube shortened?
***See #3

> 8) The common consensus is that everyone wants to know how you did the
steering stuff. Can you detail that out for me?
***The steering components are CAD/CAM designed, cut from billet steel on a
CNC
waterjet cutter (no heat, .001" tolerance) And all tapers are done on a
lathe. I won't give away the blueprints but the kit sells for $800.00 US.
Your axles come with them.

> 9) E brake Cable?
****The e brake cable will fit right on to a stock YJ, thats the way it was
designed.

On a similar note... at a local 'pick n pull' type salvage yard today I saw

Many of these looked to be in 'like new' condition.

Subject: Chiva Falls reminder

Just a reminder about the run to Chiva Falls on Monday, 9/25. Meet at the ABCO at Tanque Verde and Catalina Highway @ 8:00 AM, bring lunch and lots of fluids.

I need to try out my new Goodyear Wranglers, steering box brace (designed by Jay Eller via his website), and skid plates & rocker panel guards (courtesy of Cal and Mike at ButterZone Fab.) so a nice day of wheeling is definately in order.

E-mail if you need directions or more info.
