Yes, I have done both. The more leaves you remove, the less height you
will have. But each leaf contributes a different amount. Start with the
little/shortest ones and work your way out. As far as loosening the
clips, I have done this too. It helps the ride slightly but has more
effect on the total amount of flex you can get. The best things you can
do are to grease all of your bushings!! Believe it or not, this had a
great effect on the ride quality when I had 4" springs that were WAY
stiff.

I really hate to respond to this but feel compelled.

A problem with answer #4 (property rights, guns and fences) is that
it would be the end of our 4 wheeling here in the west. If you go
east to where there is a lot more private land (compared to public
lands) you will see much less places to 4 wheel. For example look to
almost the entire east coast or Texas.

We use public lands a lot for our hobby. We (specifically the more
organized 4 wheelers) have a only a small negative impact on the land
when we wheel responsibly. We also can have a large positive impact
when we do thing like clean ups. That is why we shouldn't be
restricted out of existance by the government. Does this make us the
"commies" or socialists for wanting to use these lands? Of course
not.

However, those who want to restrict us also want to "use" these lands
in a way. They want them preserved for "nature". This isn't a bad
use, the problem is they _think_ our use is incompatable. I believe
strongly that these uses are not contradictory. Since our negative
impact is small (as long as we are responsible) "nature" and our
hobby can get along.

(As an aside, I am not anti gun or anti property. If I were to answer
the poll, I would probably answer 4 just to skew the results. The
poll is written so answer three "subsidies: fund clean green
enterprises" is the one that they want to win. Personally I think all
four answers are needed. We need some regulation to prevent
pollution, of course we need Taxes though not overly punitive ones,
R&D helped by public funds are needed. As far as the last goes, I
feel property rights/guns are fundamental to a free society. Those
societies without property rights usually don't think other human
rights are important either. Also societies that don't trust their
citizens with guns tend not to trust them with political power. I
will not answer this poll as it simplifies things by looking for the
"best" way.)

Subject: TR: Gas pipeline tonight!


Late notice. Some friends and I are running the gas pipeline trail
tonight and have room for a few more vehicles. This will be a relaxing,
enjoy-the-weather kind of trip although there will be a few challenges
along the way.

This trail runs from Black Canyon City south to Table Mesa Road. It is
a relatively easy trail - maybe a class 3 at most. Although there are
a couple of optional spots that are more difficult. The trail takes
about 3 hours to run. It's mostly a bunch of up-and-down hill stuff
with one short stretch of rock crawling.

We're meeting at the Circle-K on Happy Valley Road and 35th Avenue at 6:45pm
tonight. Pull out time is 7:00pm. If you're interested in going, please
send me an email so I know. Stock vehicles can make this trail with a little
assistance in one or two spots. I recommend some clearance and a limited slip.
Bring a lawn chair - we may stop on top of one of the hills to relax and
enjoy the breeze.

I've Heard of People removing the leaf right above the overload, and
I personally have my clips almost wide open, and it works great, But
I also plan to coat the springs individually with a graphite paint,
which reduces the friction and allows them to slide easier. Removing
one leaf is some work, opening the clips takes about 15 minutes. If
you are going to take them off and remove a leaf you might as well
coat them too, From what I've heard, It makes a big Difference.

Sorry for the previous (political) message, this one is much more on
topic.

Put the new axle (D44) in two nights ago. No major problems putting
things back together. I do have a little seep from the diff cover,
less than a drop a day. I will live with it till I finish breaking in
the gears. The axle builder used a gasket rather than hi temp gasket
maker. So score one for the gasket maker over the gasket. Putting the
axle in was easy compared to taking it out.

Last night I bled the brakes but I don't think I did a great job.
Very little air came out. I think I need to bleed them again. I did
the two person pump/hold/unscrew bleeder/wait/rescrew bleeder and
repeat procedure. It seemed to quick for the bubbles to stop. The
brakes work but aren't very firm. Anyone have any suggestions?

FYI -- I sold the axle shafts (thanks Dion). He responded first to my
message on JU. I still have the spider gears and housing. The R&P are
3.07 and are available for free. The carrier is trashed. The housing
including cover are still available so if you want them make an
offer. The housing could be used to replace a bent one or even
better, the brackets could be cut off and welded onto a heavier duty
axle. This could allow a reasonable cheap 8.8 swap if you are handy
with a welder. The 8.8 from an Explorer is superior to a D44 in just
about every way. If I could weld, that would be the way I would have
gone.

FYI*2 -- I got the axle from Drivetrain Direct. They took a OEM TJ
housing and put 4.1 spicer/dana gears, superior axles, Auburn Pro LSD
in. Total cost was (IMO) reasonable. Took about a week and a half to
get after I placed the order.

Subject: Pro Comp spring tricks


Tom, I've got the same springs as you. I don't think I'd remove the bottom
leaf, in fact I added a stock bottom leaf to my rear pack because I was
sagging after adding bumper/carrier combo and full-size spare.

I did, however, loosen the spring clamps and it made a world of difference.
There are two on each leaf pack, front and rear. Just take a torch to each
side of the clamp and heat it up. You've really got to put the heat on it.
When sufficiently hot, use a small prybar and wedge that side up vertically
or close to vertical. Do that with all the clamps and you'll see an
improvement in ride quality and flex.

Also, keep the springs lubricated and you can old loosen the shackle bolt.
Not too loose, obviously, but not torqued all the way down. The lets the
springs twist in the shackle more.

Bleeding should be simple. I would expect you to go through at least
two pints of fluid after a rear axle swap ... maybe more. Whenever I
bleed the brakes, I do the following:

Note: Always bleed the longest line first, followed by next longest
line and so on when bleeding a complete system. The term 'longest'
means line length from master cylinder (M/C) to brake drum/caliper.

1. Check the level of the M/C and add fluid if it's less than 1/2
full.
2. Person1 pumps the brakes 4-5 times then keeps pedal down.
3. Person2 opens bleeder 1/4-1/2 turn until pedal depresses.
4. Person2 closes bleeded tight.
5. Person1 lets up pedal.
6. Repeat 1-5 at least 4 times and Person1 has good pedal feel and NO
air bubbles come out of the lines when bleeding.
7. Do same procedure on other drum assy.

Sounds like you were doing it the same way, but it's hard to say. I
just thought I'd share with you how I bleed brakes on my Jeeps. In
your case, you probably have a large part of your rear frame line
full of air, but the lines from the T fitting to the drums might
still have fluid from the previous installation. You might have not
have gotten the air from the frame lines to the drums if you only did
the above procedure once or twice. Just my $0.02

If your having bleeding problems, one needs to know exactly what kind
of brakes you have. Did you go to disk in the rear? If so, you could
have either of two problems.

The first problem I've seen is the stock master cylinder might not
have enough volume for whatever disk rears are on there, and it will
never get to a point that you don't have to pump it up. In that case
you have to seek out an appropriate master cylinder. For us on our YJ
and custom Dana 44's with disks, it involved swapping the YJ master
for an 86 or so Mustang GT with disk all around master cylinder (then
you get to deal with such details as matching up the fittings).

The second problem is some rear disk setups require you unmount the
caliper and position it such that the bleed valve is the highest
point. This is the situation I encountered on my Classic Bronco with
TSM rear disk brake conversion.

I broke a drive shaft strap on a fun section with Lazy boy size rolling rocks(I don't mean beer). That was in my 33" days. Otherwise it is preatty tame.
Hey I have the same issue on my axel. Check out the CJ7 that won the top truck challenge in four wheeler mag, I like the bar he uses and he has about 425hp to deal with and SOA.

Hey guys I recently had the fortune of having a lovely uninsured motorist
with no dl rearend me. My jeep needs a new rear axle and depending on the
price difference I might be able to get a ford 8.8 put in there. It should
be pretty simple because you can find complete 8.8's with 4.10 gears and ls
so all I would need them to do is cut off the old brackets and weld on the
new axle brackets for me. Any shop recommendations or advice?

Hey I have the same issue on my axel. Check out the CJ7 that won the top truck challenge in four wheeler mag, I like the bar he uses and he has about 425hp to deal with and SOA.

What is the trail rating for Mud Springs and what kind or terrain is it. Any other info on this trail would be appreciated. Some friends are doing this trail on Sunday, I will be going if I can get the traction bar built for my YJ. I have had a bad axle wrap problem since I did the soa. That is Sam Patterson. You can see some of the goods on his website: www.samsoffroad.com

He has a slick anti-wrap bar that doesnt hinder articulation in anyway and completely prevents axle wrap. Its a little pricey at $300 but there is some good pics to get ideas to build your own. Rubicon Express sells those same cartridge joints.
