I've seen a few jeeps around the valley with their fire
extinguishers
mounted to the rollbars. Mine just sits in the cargo area
and usually rolls
around and bangs into stuff. I haven't been able to locate
anything that
seems like it'd fit the rollbar. Any tips on making
something to do this, or
a store where such an item is available?

Subject: Anyone Wanna Swap???
I've got a '99 TJ with a dark tan soft top and dark tan hard top. I'd
like to have a '99 TJ with a black soft top and black hard top.
Although, I'm not really keen on the idea of buying new tops and
trying to sell my old ones.
So, I raise the question. Is anyone interested in a top swap? Both
tops are in great condition. When the hard top is off, I store it in
my garage. The windows on the soft top have what I consider normal
wear, but no big scratches. The hard top has the privacy glass in the
back and defrost on the rear. The hard top once had the rear passenger
quarter panel glass busted in, but it was replaced with factory glass.
There's also an "Arizona State University" (Go Devils) sticker on the
rear glass that can be removed.
I'd like to swap for tops in similar condition. I'd like the new hard
top to have the tinted windows and defrost as well. The condition of
the soft windows isn't really important. I will probably replace with
tinted windows anyway.
I can send pictures of both tops if interested. (Have to take some and
download, no problem though.) I won't have to swap both tops to the
same person. If I can find one person with two tops to swap, fine. If
not one with hard top and one with soft top will work.
I live in Tucson but will drive to Phoenix/meet half-way to make a
deal.
E-mail me (brent_lizakowski@h...) or post if interested.

Subject: Silly Sticker Question...
OK - Here's the thing. I have an ASU Alumni Sticker on my front winshield. It's clear with red/gold writing. The rest of my stickers are (bright) white. you can't even see the ASU sticker. Has anyone seen a brighter ASU or ASU Alumni sticker? I need one that is not much bigger than the one I have (about 9" x 2")- even a square one would work, as long as it's bright!
And for those UofA people who are still reading, my friend Tomie is looking for the same thing for hers (not a UofA Alumni one, just a UofA one) - but brighter. Right now she has a square wildcat on there that you can barely see.
If you can locate either of these, please let me know, and we'll send some moo-lah to ya to get em!

Subject: October 27 - My Baby is Growing UP!
OK - the date is set!! Me (and hopefully my friend Tomie) will be
driving to Calgary (yes - Seattle to CANADA!) to make my baby Jeep grow
up! I put it off a few weeks because I found some wonderful person
(Gary TJ, president of Timber Tamers) to let me use his truck/trailer to
truck it up there! This solves the problems of place to work on the
jeep/finding someone to help/tools/driving it right after a ton of work
done/yadda yadda...
Anyway - Here's what's going to be done:
1) Front and Rear Dana 44s (from a Scout)
2) 4.56 gears
3) Front Detroit EZ Locker
4) Rear Detroit Locker
5) Billet High Steer (? I think that's what it's called...)
6) Spring Over Axle Lift
7) YJ Stock Springs with 1 extra YJ Leaf each
8) Dana 300 Transfer Case (with spacer plate from AA - cost more
than the damn transfer case!!)
9) Rancho RS9000 shocks
10) New Wheels (different bolt pattern!)
11) Extend Drive Shafts
Yes, we do plan on doing this in a weekend. The Axles are all complete
and ready, pretty much just bolt up...doing it in a full shop...
Anyway - I need some ideas on the "little things" that I need to take
with me. I know extended brake lines, and the shock mounts (RS9000s are
different than the stock shock mounts)...what else?

Subject: Re: October 27 - My Baby is Growing UP!
They may have all of these, but thought I would mention them:
SOA will need spring perches. Will also need some weld on shock mounts
(assuming yours are currently on the spring plates.) Spring plates or just
reuse your old ones. Might need new ubolts since you are adding a spring to
the pack.
I would be impressed if you found a place to make a drive shaft for you on a
weekend. You'll want to go with a CV style to eliminate vibs. You'll want
to do the SOA, then measure the drive shaft length to be sure you get it
just right. Again, the shop where you are going may be able to "eye ball"
this before hand, but I would feel more comfortable getting it all together
and then measuring. If you go CV drive shaft, you'll need a new output yoke
for the D300. The stocker won't work.
I'd be interested in hearing more about the high clearance steering setup
they are going to use. Do they replace the entire passenger's side
knuckle? Or is there some "bolt on" deal? I need to do this on my CJ7
(D30) but have yet to find a reasonable, inexpensive way to do it.
Anyway.....just some thoughts from some of my experiences with this type of
stuff.

Stacy-Michelle --
I recently did an SOA using Scout D44s on my '68 CJ5 and have some
1st hand input regarding the swap:
1) unless you shorten the tubes of the front axle, you will have to
move the front spring hangers and shackle hangers outboard about 1.5"
each side to properly center the front axle. Removing the original
shackle and spring hangers on my CJ was a lot of work, but
fabricating new hangers that sit outboard the frame took a ton of
time, material, and tools.
2) are you planning on rotating the knuckles to compensate for the
nearly 0* caster you'll get with these axles after the SOA? The
Scout axles have little caster in their stock spring under axle
configuration, but the problem is much more of a problem in an SOA
axle swap. I haven't cut and rotated my knuckles yet, but I can live
with (for the meantime) 0* caster and a negative pinion angle out the
front pinion yoke.
3) are you keeping the scout brakes? my '79 scout front calipers
have an off-standard banjo bolt thread (not 7/16x20 or 3/8x24 like
most GM calipers) and I was only able to use banjo bolts found at a
scout junkyard. If you've already got the banjo bolts, then you can
easily use GM fullsize truck extended brake lines for brake lines
(thanks Cal in Tucson for that advise).
4) Billet High Steer? Never heard of that one, but if it's a
knuckle-over steering conversion, you should double check that it's
available for Scout D44s knuckles, as they are different from Chevy
D44 and AMC D44 knuckles. If it is available, PLEASE send me info
about it so I can look into it for my setup. Also, because the right-
front spring must mount to the housing and not the tube, the spring
height is much greater than a typical SOA setup. I found that it is
much harder to get the drag link above the spring because it will
contact the spring during articulation. I think Bill Mish's CJ3B has
a Scout front end, although his is spring under as I recall. He got
his drag link above the springs but I didn't get a chance to look at
his setup except at 2am in the desert :)
Good luck, and you'll be very glad when your lift is complete. FWIW,
I spent four 8-hour days cutting off my stock spring hangers from my
frame -- all in all, my SOA took far longer than any I've heard of,
but the Scout axles complicate things immensily. Start to finish was
roughly 4 weekends from spring under with stock springs to SOA with
YJ springs on custom hangers and custom shock hoops.

OK -
#1 - These are coming off of a YJ already - so they have been shortened.
#2 - I don't know the specifics on this, but this also was something that is already taken care of.
#3 - Until someone mentioned it this morning, I didn't even think of this. I will ask the guy about it, but I'm assuming that this is something he has/can get ahold of - seeing as how this is coming out of a YJ.
#4 - I will look into this for you. All I know is "Billet High steer with linkage out of a Chevy 1-Ton" - this is supposed to take care of any bump steer. I don't know much about this...but I will try to get you information.
Thanks for the info and I will keep you updated...

First comment - of the lists that I'm on (Jeep-L and the NW list) that I posted and got comments on this thing...the Arizona list is BY FAR the most useful and nicest!! :)
This project is going to be just about as bolt on as it could get. The axles were built up for a YJ this year, used over the summer, and going to be put on my YJ now (the other guy just got some D60s and is going to 44" boggers - don't ask). Perches are already on there (SOA setup). I do need shock mounts (I think I mentioned that). He's including the heavy duty U-bolts he has on it, and I'm getting his springs (The YJ ones with another YJ leaf already added in).
I'm not getting the CV style drive shaft (yet) - he has said *something* (I need to take better notes) has been done already to eliminate vibs and the CV style is not required. I'm actually not doing the drive shafts there, I'm going to do everything but the drive shafts and shocks there - and then trailer it home on Sunday, and drop it off at the Driveline place here in Seattle, they'll extend both drive shafts on Monday morning. Shocks will be ordered monday morning, probably installed later that week.
The Steering thing that he's using is also already done. I will try to get more info on it, and post it here (I may have an email from him at home that already has that).
Once again, thanks for the comments, and I'll keep you guys updated!

allow it to cover the CB channels. It is also has lower and upper sidebands,
AM, FM, and CW. The radio puts out up to 25 watts depnding on the mode. It
has easy attachments for a PA and/or external speaker. It has everything.
BUT, as it sits the radio is technically not legal to use on CB frequencies
due to the wattage. So if anyone is interested in this, let me know. The
original price new with the mods was about $ 350. I'll take $ 225.

Subject: Sparky Antenna Balls...
There should be a picture on my homepage somewhere. Under "Rigs" - click on either my jeep or Lauren's (Probably Lauren's) - and it would have a picture. They're yellow, ASU on one side, and Sparky on the other. I think the Alumni Assoc in Arizona had them made, and shipped them up here with something we got from them!

If I can get a few, I'll bring them down with me on the 14th - that way you have to meet me to get em!! :)

Subject: Ultimate CB for sale
All this chat of CB's made me think of an extra that I have. I have a Uniden
HR 2510. This is a ham based radio that has an internal modification to
allow it to cover the CB channels.

Subject: Air Tools
Is it okay to run air tools at 125psi? I know they say 4CFM at 90PSI on
them but I don't currently have a regulator in my air system and need to
know if it has to have one before I can run the tools. Thanks.
