I looked into this for replacing my work van. As an example a factory built Ford E250 CNG van has a 40% rebate from the state. On vehicles that are converted aftermarket the rebate is 30% state rebate plus conversion costs. Of course what they don't tell you is that this rebate money is then subject to federal income taxes. That's when I gave up on it.

OK here is the scoop. I was looking to purchase a 2001 f-250 crew cab at a
price of 27,000 dollars. My estimated refund for AFV was about 7000 dollars.
There is no way this gentleman is going to be refunded 95% of vehicle cost. I
do believe he is headed for some serious financial trouble. Now for the big
question. Who in there right mind would give any one a 90,000 dollar three
year note. This is insane.

Subject: Re: GPS Software
I use Street Atlas and OziExplorer.
Street Atlas, surprisingly has most forest service roads. I was
not expecting SA to be much use off-road but it has proven to be
very good. The on-road mapping is great (I expected that). We
took a 5000 mile trip in July to Washington and had it running on
the laptop with GPS the entire time. Was nice to be able to see
where we were, what we were looking at, how far to the next gas,
location of camping areas...you get the idea. Another plus I
hadn't expected was when driving at night on curvy mountain roads
(did lots of that) you could glance at the map and see what was
coming up. Makes planning for passing that slow motorhome a
little less frustrating also.
OziExplorer is good program. I haven't used it too much as of yet
(just registered it last week) I am downloading USGS topo maps
from the U of A most every night, I have an ISDN connection so it
is pretty painless, if was on a modem I would look for another
source. It has a lot of nice features and the GPS related stuff
is really great.
I have looked at the GPS's with built in mapping...really can't
see using it as the size of the screen is too limiting. I have
noticed that most maps are very hard to fold up...that is because
for a map to be *really* useful it has to be *BIG*. A fast laptop
(for scrolling the map) is a compromise, but is pretty usable. I
have a Lowrance Globalnav 200 that I bought from a friend for
$100. When hooked to the laptop it just sits the in the mount on
the windshield and does it's thing. Rarely look at it, all the
info it on the laptop. It is always available to use if I don't
have the laptop or am going walking, riding with someone else or
whatever.
As a note, I have a very nice mobile desk in my jeep (a ZJ) to
hold the laptop.
There are more and more programs coming out for transferring maps
from different programs to the GPS's with map storage...thier
usefulness is surely increasing.
Go here to learn about GPS and mapping in general:

Hey all --
I missed if there was anyone looking to see if we could get
a group
discount on Big Tex carhauler trailers. Someone please
update me if
there was.
If there wasn't, I'm willing to step up and talk to them
about a
group commitment for a few trailers. What I need to know is
how many
and who are [seriously] interested in doing a deal like
this. Who
knows if they're willing to drop the price for a group
purchase, but
it's worth a shot. FWIW, a friend of mine bought a new 18'
tandem
with electric brakes on one axle for about $1700 - a couple
hundred
more to make it useable and legal. Pretty pricy but
definately worth
the $$ IMHO.
I guess the first step is to get more specific information
about
their trailers and find out availability and pricing.
Please email me offline (jeffm @ desertwave.com) with
questions I
should ask them.

Typically, with clean ups, we clean the first half of the day or so, and
then have lunch. If things have gone well, there is generally a run of
some kind at that point.
This thing has been flyered all over. There will be some motorcycle/ATV

Subject: RE: GPS Software
I'll second Ralph's opinion on OziExplorer. I have been using it for about
a year now, and rarely leave home without it.
Unfortunately, I have found NO software that will upload maps to a Garmin
GPS aside from Garmin's own proprietary software and maps. They keep this
info very close to their chest for obvious reasons. Someday, someone will
figure it out, which will then cause Garmin to change their method on their
newer GPS receivers and start the process all over again.
If you have a Garmin GPS, I strongly urge you obtain their MapSource Roads &
Rec CD. It does a great job when off-roading. Many of the trails are
already on it. The rest of my map info is converted into a Garmin track log
and sent to the GPS.
You can check with the local VJCers that have been making the night runs all
summer long with me. Haven't gotten ever more than 100' or so off of where
I wanted to be in the middle of the night.
Plus, OziExplorer prints outstanding USGS 7.5' quad maps when you use a good
quality color printer....and it doesn't cost you $6 a shot like the map
stores charge.

Subject: Re: rollbar mounted fire extinguisher
Did yours come with a mounting bracket? I got my small extinguisher from a Fire Extinguisher company (I work construction - easy to find), and it came with a metal bracket to mount it on the wall. I strapped that bracket to my roll bar with a few of the ...uh...hose clamps? I'm not sure what they are called, but you use them for radiator hoses and such...the metal ones that tighten with a screwdriver?. The FE then secures pretty nicely on there. Then, I have a couple heavy duty zip ties around the whole thing. That's kind of a hard call on securing it, you want it secure so that it doesn't "suddenly" fall (see previous conversations on high lift jacks!) - but you want to be able to get to it in an emergency!

There are some handy velcrow straps that work pretty well depending on where
you put the fire ext. I have mine on the passenger side bar behind the
front seat. Office Depot had some velcrow straps that have the plastic
buckle so you can secure it around the bar and ext. -Rob

Whenever I put something in the Jeep I look at it and ask myself "If
I roll over would I want this to hit me in the head?" If I answer
"No" then I make sure that it is tightly secured so that in the event
of a roll over it can't hit me in the head.
My 2 cents,

I worked with some volunteer firefighters in California when I was in high school, in this desolate part of the high desert...I've seen people who (normally) would have survived the roll (vehicle intact) but got impaled by *something* in the vehicle...you'd be amazed at the stuff that can nail someone. We saw one guy whacked in the head with a battery that was on the floor in the back seat! Never underestimate *what* will cause the problem in the roll over!!

I'm looking to purchase a Skyjacker Softride 4" spring lift for
my '78 Chero. Anyone know a local dealer that sells Skyjacker kits?
I called 4wheeler but they don't carry that brand.
