Also, if you smack into something good on the trail, you'll never get it out of there. Probably less common when wheeling on dry stuff, but I've seen people slide around pretty damn good, and then slide right into something, and denting odd places ;)

The Teraflex and Rubicon Express are pretty much considered the top
two. Which is the best? You'll get all kinds of answers. I couldn't
tell you as I haven't seen either in action. But, they're just about
neck and neck.
One of the 4x4 mags not too long ago (can't remember which) did a side
by side comparison. Teraflex came out ahead. But, RE didn't have a rig
equipped the way they wanted for the competition. So, it wasn't really
a fair contest.
I personally went with a RE 4.5" SuperFlex kit. I based my decision on
what I read out on the 'net. There seemed to be a lot more sites that
gave step by step info on how to install the kit (they should come in
handy for me around the December time frame when I plan on installing
everything). Also, the RE kit is more "complete" (i.e. it comes with
upper AND lower control arms, adjustable trac bar, stainless steel
brake lines, and probably some other goodies I can't remember off
hand). Most think the RE kit has crappy swaybar disconects. Tera's are
pretty good. I personally went with JKS's adjustable disco's for my
rig.
Do some research and decide for yourself. Ultimately, it comes down to
how much you can afford to spend and what kind of wheeling you're
going to be doing. If you want some links for the two lifts (install
write-ups, etc.), I can send you some.

Subject: Re: Alternative Vehicle Conversion
http://www.azcommerce.com/energy2/altfuels.htm
This link should explain what the state is doing for alternative fuel
vehicles (AFV's). The F-450,550,650, etc. all have gross weigts above 12000
pounds. The state will reimburse 40 percent of the purchase price or $30,000
which ever is greater. The base F-450 chasis cab goes for 32,500. Subtract
$30,000 and you have a vehicle for almost nothing. Great if you can get one.
I ordered my F-150 AFV in May. It is not scheduled to arrive until December.
Big word of caution for those of you scratching there heads, the state may
change legislation after the first of the year because of the severe
financial burden. So if you order now thinking you get all that money back
and the vehicle does not arrive until after the first of the year you could
be screwed. Another word of caution, the F-450 V-10 propane trucks are not
glitch free. My boss has 3 now and they are having fuel delivery problems.
The problem is with fords V-8 propane, too. Haven't heard anything about
CNG, though. I just remembered, you have to own the vehicle for a year
before selling, and have to show receipts for alternate fuel use. Not sure
on the amount per year.
Just something for ya'll to think about.

Stu,
Thought you might be interested in how my HiLift is mounted since I think
you have the same Warn winch mount.
I was over at Brad Kilby's shop in CA a few weeks ago and he had these
brackets laying on a shelf. I asked him what they were and he said they were
highlift mounts for a TJ with a Warn mount. He found out that the four
little square holes on the Warn winch mount that are used to bolt on the
optional Warn brushguard are the same distance apart as the holes in a 48"
hilift jack. He used to have this type of mount so he fabbed up the
brackets. The brackets are held in place by carriage bolts (square holes in
mount) and a larger bolt was welded to the bracket at the top to hold the
hilift. They work well. The price was right (free).
Here's some pics of the mounts
http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=637162&a=8864189
Now for those eagle-eye readers, yes I know it is not bolted down in the
pics. I put it on the mount for picture taking purposes. I take it off when
not wheeling for theft protection.

I guess the first step is to get more specific information about

I have tried several map programs to use with my GPS. DeLorme's Topo USA has
the best detail and print qualities. I think Garamin's Mapsource is "must
have" software for your GPS, even if you get something else to use on your
computer. Mapsource will install detailed maps into your GPS, and the PC
part of it is by far the easiest to use. On a recent trip to Moab, I loaded
Moab area maps into my Garamin GPS before I left. Trails that I have been
lost on before, like Golden Spike and Hell's Revenge, were in the GPS and I
could easily follow them. You have to have Mapsource to get the most from
your Garamin GPS.

I guess the first step is to get more specific information about

part of it is by far the easiest to use.
