Next week I'll be swapping from a 1" body lift to 2" to keep the 35" tires from doing any more damage the fenders, and installing Metcalf Motorsports flat crossmember and 2" lifted motor mounts.

UPDATE TO ROCKER PANEL PASS
Trail Run:
Where = Rocker Panel Pass
Rating = 3+ (***More like 3.5 with 4.0 most likely?)
When = Saturday, September 30th
Time = 7:30am at McDonalds, 8:00am at the 87 turnoff
Lead = Linda L
Duration = 1/2 to 3/4 of a day
As far as the trail rating, it seems a 4.0 is what we should expect the trail to be. If Thomas J's post gets answered that yes, lockers are required, he and I may have to go somewhere else. Anyway, we'll see. Here's the list of possible's for the run.
Devon W (white CJ)
Linda L (black ZJ)
Scott K (tan TJ)
Dale S (green TJ)
Mike T (?)
Eban (YJ)
John N (XJ)
Thomas J (YJ)
If you want to add or remove yourself please respond to me directly and I'll update the list. You can also respond if you'd like something lighter for the 30th since I have to go somewhere (got company coming), and I'm still not positive about attempting a solid 4.0 trail.
There will also be a run on Monday, 10-2-00 which will most likely be Box Canyon and the Coke Ovens. I'm open to suggestions from anyone looking to do something though. FR42 is done pretty often but I've never run it so it's also a possibility for Monday, or Saturday the 30th if an alternate run is determined to be needed for those of us who are unlocked.
Anyway, back to Rocker Panel Pass information. The plan is to leave the McDonalds on the NE corner of McKellips & Country Club (Mesa) at 7:30. Show up early if you'd like coffee or something to eat. If you can't make McDonalds, plan on meeting at the turnoff of 87. Unfortunately I don't know the mile marker or the geographical description of the turnoff, but I'm sure someone who does will respond and let us know. (Doug has a write-up of Rocker Panel on the az_vjc website with coordinates of the turnoff so you can find the exact location that way if you're gps'd)
See ya somewhere,

so you can get them to fit right. I just went to Ray at Gold Star drive line

Subject: TJ D44 swap, D35c problem
Howdy all --
As some of you may know, I am swapping a Dana 44 axle for my D35c.
Figured some info from this might be interesting and or useful (nah
but I felt like writing).
General swap info --
Day 1 -- removed old axle.
Took about 4 hours working alone, but I figure I am about 1/3 of the
way done with swap.
I pulled the Dana 35c out and it is sitting next to the Jeep.
Not much to it, just disconnect everything attached to the axle and
pull it out from under. No nuts were too tough though I did break a
small socket on the driveshaft strap bolts.
Biggest pita was the brakes, which leads to my question.
I disconnected the rubber hose from the hard line at the fitting on
the driver side upper control arm. This led to the draining of maybe
3
ounces of brake fluid. I know I need to bleed the rear brakes after
reinstalling them. Will I need to bleed the front? I was surprised at
how much fluid came out. I wasn't surprised out how foul the stuff
is, but it sure does stink. What the hell makes brake fluid so
rotten?
Now I've just got to tranfer over the rear drums, install the axle,
and bleed the brakes.
Of course, then I have to pay someone to regear the front, unless I
want to try to make my own AEV style stretch TJ the first time I put
it into 4wd.
Day 2 -- Struggle with lock bolt / D35c problem people need to know.
Everything was going fine. I removed the old axle and was getting
ready to pull the brakes off.
To do this you need to pull the axle shafts.
Because of the c-clips, the diff cover must be removed and the cross
shaft must be moved out of the way. This is the shaft that the spider
gears ride on. It is held in place with a small lock bolt.
This bolt took me 1 1/2 hours to get out. I started off with what I
thought was the correct 12 point socket and rounded off the head. Now
the real fun begins. Tried to use a vice-grips (real ones). No good,
just messed up the head more.
Now I decided to get a little medieval on it. Bought a Mapp gas torch
and heated the bolt and carrier. Still not a bit of movement.
At this point I decided to sacrifice the carrier.
Got out one of my favorite tools -- The dremel rotary tool with
cutting disc. Using several discs, I cut a slot right down to the
bolt. This released it enough so I could get it out.
It was trivial to move the cross shaft and remove the axle shafts
once
the bolt was out.
Lessons Learned:
If you have a D35 and think you might break a shaft MAKE SURE YOU
HAVE
THE CORRECT TOOL TO REMOVE THE LOCK BOLT! I don't know what that tool
is, but what I had didn't work. I think a 12 point closed end wrench
of the correct size would work. A socket didn't.
If this post makes you paranoid try to remove the bolt the next time
you change diff oil. It might save you a world of grief on the trail.
According to the repair manual I have, the bolt takes 14 foot pounds
of torque. Whoever/whatever tightened mine must have used a lot more.
I didn't see any locktite, but there might have been some.
One a more positive note, I now have most of a D35 for sale. Two axle
shafts in great condition. Spider and side gear looking good. A
complete axle housing (good for bracketry for a custom swap or to
replace a bent one. I also have Ring and Pinion gears, but doubt
anyone wants 3.07 gears (I sure didn't want them). Anyone need some
spare parts?
Putting the brakes on the new axle was trivial after this ordeal. I'm
just about ready to put the new axle back under the Jeep. Since this
involves putting in bolts, it should be easy, right?

Hmm, I'd be surprised if you only got 4" out of an SOA on your CJ. I
netted over 5" with stock-length shackles and flat springs. Email me
if you want more info on how mine turned out. Three things you
really should deal with after/during an SOA - (1) relocation of
steering linkage above the springs, (2) shock hoops or mounts that
allow long shocks like Rancho 9012s, and (3) some way to address
spring wrap. You are going to have gobs of torque from your 327, so
you need to think about spring wrap as you're doing your SOA. I've
heard good and bad things about the revolvers, but IMHO they aren't
worth the high $$, especially from a super flexy SOA setup. Most
people do a shackle reversal when they do an SOA. I doubt you'll be
able to find a kit for your 65, since all shackle reversal kits I've
seen are available for '72+. You can certainly do the shackle
reversal yourself if you have some fabrication skills and tools.

I'll have to back up that amount of lift part. I haven't done it yet, but in a SOA you are going up the size of the axle + 2times the size of the perches (they were on bottom, but now on top...) - I've been told it's 5 1/2" - but depending on how your springs sag/droop with that done it could be a little less. Add a leafs could make it a little more.

Trail Run:
Where = Rocker Panel Pass
Rating = 3+ (***More like 3.5 with 4.0 most likely?)
When = Saturday, September 30th
Time = 7:30am at McDonalds, 8:00am at the 87 turnoff
Lead = Linda L
Duration = 1/2 to 3/4 of a day
As far as the trail rating, it seems a 4.0 is what we should expect the trail to be.

You can certainly do the shackle
reversal yourself if you have some fabrication skills and tools.

interfere with clearance or anything. I'm kind of impatient... what is my
best course of action? Wait for the so-called "good" mounting system, or go
out and buy the "crappy" one?

Hey Blair, I got the original mounts and hate them hehee I found a great
place to put it, away from the rocks, mud, water dust and so. On the floor
of my Jeep, behind and under the seats, there is kind of a little step from
the floor and the rear bed. Am I clear enough? Its like this
X = Front seats
RS = Rear seat
X X
_here_
RS
Its away from thief's too and I like to have it there, and its easy to take
it out and so, since I just fold forward the passenger seat and get it or
Jump from the tailgate and grab it.
Mine is the 52" version or so, Its not as long as the 60" LOL but I'm sure
both can fit there.
Hope it helps.

If you have a YJ or TJ you might want to store the beam in the tube behind
the front bumper and the rest inside the Jeep.

It has worked great for me.
