Subject: [az_vjc] removed timbers on Crown King Trail on Saturday
On Saturday, I ran up to Crown King during the morning. I stayed ahead of
the heat and it made for a nice trip. Travel time was 4.5 hours, which
included doing all of the optional obstacles and 30 minutes for lunch and
trail assistance (see below).
I removed the timbers that someone had piled up on the downhill side of the
rock ledge by the OraBelle Mine (sp). I did not toss them over the side and
down into the ravine. Maybe the next person that decides to use them will
remove them when they are done.
As I came up to the rock ledge, I found a rock buggy sitting cross ways in
the trail. It and several companion vehicles had passed me earlier on the
trail.
The driver was attempting to turn around and head back for Phoenix (said he
had to go to work) when he popped the bead on a front tire. They were
getting ready to attempt to seat it with a can of Fix-a-Flat when I showed
up. I asked them if they would rather use some real air. They jumped at
the chance, so I hooked up my hose to the QA2 and gave it to them.
While they seated the bead and inflated the tire, I began tossing the
timbers off to the side of the trail. By the time I finished this, the tire
was inflated and the happy driver was on his way to Phoenix. I rolled up
the air hose, closed up the tail gate, and locked the rack in place.
With the trail clear, I slipped the TJ into 1st gear and rolled up and over
the ledge with no problem, no scrapes, and no sweat. One of the other rock
buggy riders commented that I sure made it look easy. I smiled and said I
was on my way to hook up with some friends so we could go 4 wheelin'. Her
husband said "You mean this ain't 4 wheelin'?" I replied that this trail
was used to loosen up the grease and get the gear lube warmed up for the
real trails. He smiled and knew I was pulling his chain just a bit. In
their defense, their suspension allowed them to really cruise along on that
trail while my TJ would have bounced clean off the road.
I met the same group later on in Crown King, as I was sitting by the general
store eating a great big Nestle's Crunch ice-cream bar. (I had already
finished the cold beer part of the ritual.) Several of them bought a couple
and joined me. I got an invite to their off-road outing next month. (They
probably want someone there with an air hose!)
After that, I left the store and headed south on the Senator Highway to find
the Tip Top Trail.
Little did I know what the future would hold for me, for this would be the
first time I would be wheelin' with none other than Bill "Where the hell did
the trail disappear to!" Mish.
But that is the Sunday story and I am only making my comments concerning
Saturday's adventure.
Bill and Ross and Keith will have to fill you all in on that little episode.
Bill, I stopped by Discount Tire today and collected on my road hazard
insurance on that rear tire. Got them balanced too, as I think I scraped a
couple of weights off on that hill!
Ross....where the heck are those pictures? ;^)

AAARGH!!!!!
Sounds like I missed a hell of a good time......... At least on Sunday I
got to do the next best thing to Jeeping.........Junkyarding!!
During the pre-flight inspection for last weekends runs I discovered that my
most recent repair of a repair of a repair (yes, that's three) on my gas
tank has started seeping again, and I didn't want to hit the trail with a
leaking gas tank.
"Where's Len?"
"I dunno, but this sure is a nice fire he made for us. Pass the
marshmallows."
I did manage to locate (more like stumble across....literally) a replacement
tank AND a second J-10 tank that I can set up as an aux saddle tank, which
will raise my capacity to 40 gallons for those long weekends.
I'll be back on the trail soon, but in the meantime PLEASE post some pics
and a writeup!! I'm jonesing pretty hard :-)
Len
btw..........I'm going to be shopping for some custom fabbed skid plates for
the new tanks so that they don't end up like the old one. I can weld up the
pieces myself, but I need a source for 1/4" plate and a shop that can bend
it. ( I want a smooth corner on the front for sliding instead of a sharp
angle that grabs) Any suggestions? OR Fab? Toybox? Others?

Just my opinion, but I feel a good shop admits their screw up/wrong diagnosis
and puts your old trackbar back on and refunds your money!!! Do you guys
agree?? Their obvious knee jerk reaction was that the "death wobble" was coming
from a worn out trackbar which is 8 our of 10 times the culprit. But it seems
that a misread like this should be refunded.

We've been through Canyon De Chelly a few times. It really isn't a "trail"
in the sense of the word. It is full of Anasazi ruins and you drive along
the bottom of a canyon which has a river running through it. It is more of
a spiritual adventure and the Indian guide tells you where to go and you
really can't play around down there. The few times we went we drove a 97
GMC 4WD Jimmy and the fee was $10/hr for the guide plus we gave them tips.
Last time I went up there, in April, the fee had doubled to $20/hr. It is a
wonderful experience but not really a trail, it is a tribal park with
overlooks up above.

Basically, on a semi-floater the weight of the vehicle is supported by
the axleshaft. On a full floater, it is not. Full floaters fail
gracefully, semi-floaters, well, don't.
You generally want a full floater, but... On a D60, depending on what
size tire you are running, it might not be a huge consideration, given
the smaller chance of failure.
If it was me, though, I'd look for a full floater.

The Tucson Rough Riders do a trip up there every couple of years. We went
this year. It's not so much of a Run as a vacation. We took 4 days.. 1 to
drive up as a group, 1 to do Canyon De Chelly, 1 to do Canyon Del Muerte and
the last to hit the Painted Desert / Petrified Forest and drive back. You
must have 1 Indian Guide per 5 vehicles and they tell you where to go. The
drives along the bottom of the canyons are breathtaking, and not too tough. I
believe we had around 18 jeeps and 7 various other vehicles, including some
Land Cruisers and even a full size Dodge Ram. We went in June so there wasn't
any water running in the canyon and it was pretty easy. Spring there's a lot
more water and it gets a bit wet and muddy but nothing serious. You can go
to the web page for the National Park Service and they have all of the
information on it there. http://www.nps.gov/cach/
Hope this helps, it's a great trip but not much of a Run. =)

The trip down Canyon DeChelly is super. But it is because of the
scenery, not the test of Jeep'n skills. You can pay something like
$80 for a seat on a flatbed truck with about 40 other people to take a
tour... or you can go as a group of five 4X4 vehicles and hire a guide
for about $50 apiece. When I went with four other Jeeps, the weather
was dry and the two main creeks(we crossed the same creeks about 70
times in the two canyons) were fordable... Jeeps got plenty muddy
though. The indian guide grew up in the canyon... most do... so he
told us all about the place. We stopped often and got out to see the
ruins, etc. He rode in the lead Jeep, and spoke into a CB mike so that
the rest of us could hear the details. The history of the canyon is
remarkable... I wish I'd have tape recorded my guide. Do not tape
record or photograph your guide unless he agrees. If you go take a
camera and a lunch and lots of water... you could be down there for as
long as 10 hours if the guide is generous. We chipped in after the trip
and took the guide and his wife to the park restaraunt for scrumptious
Navajo Tacos.
The best way to do this trip is to camp at the park(free... water and
toilets only) the night before, and get to the ranger station before it
opens to arrange the guided trip, then stay over one more night.
If it's been a rainy season the creek might be too deep for the Jeeps...
call ahead.

I am dealing with Oscar right know on a new Rock crawler rear drive shaft he
made for me. Last week when I ordered it, We talked through the whole
scenario, like what size tubing, 12" spines, 1350 yokes, everything. I
specifically asked him if ALL of the drive shaft components would be new. He
clearly said "Yes every thing will be new"
Yesterday I picked up my drive shaft. It looked great all covered in silver
paint. After closer inspection, I found that the yokes were used. They just
painted over the caked on grease they couldn't get off.
I could live with that. After all if the yokes were not damaged they would
work fine for me. But both U-Joints were used. One U-joint had 4 completely
different caps on it. The other U-Joint had 2 new caps and 2 used caps.
I took the drive shaft back to Oscar today. I told him about the used
components...he just started giving me a bunch of "used car salesmen double
talk" (sorry to any used car salesmen out there). I told him that he needed
to install new U-Joints like I paid for. And could he cut me a deal on
lengthening my front drive shaft for all the trouble I've been through?
He told me that "he didn't see that I've been put through any trouble, But
he would cut $10 off my front drive shaft job. I told him I will have it

Just a warning: Watch what you get from Gloeco, Shiny Paint does not make
for a New Drive shaft.

I haven't seen anyone pop a bead with 33x12.50 on a 10, I'm starting to
think that wight be somewhat of a myth.
I like 15x8 though, because the tire protects the rim better, and it
actually maken them a bit taller (A friend and I measured two bfg/at's,
one 32x11.50 on 15x8 and one 33x12.50 on 15x10 and they were the same
height.)

I haven't seen anyone pop a bead with 33x12.50 on a 10, I'm starting to
think that wight be somewhat of a myth.
I like 15x8 though, because the tire protects the rim better, and it
actually maken them a bit taller (A friend and I measured two bfg/at's,
one 32x11.50 on 15x8 and one 33x12.50 on 15x10 and they were the same
height.)
