That ought to be nice competition for OffRoad Unlimited less than 1/2
mi E. I wondered who would be occupying that place since it's
already got service bays in the back.

Yes, but I think it's on-line only at www.macromotive.com. You sign
up using the club account number (952116113295-940) and the discount
prices are shown. It's only on some items I think.

This info is in the database section under the "business directory"
database.

I don't know if I can agree with 4 Wheelers Supply being the best ones
around, although I did have them do mine this past spring. I had my TJ in
for a noise in the front axle and it was the spindle nut, not properly
torqued. It not longer makes any noise so I must accept the fact that this
was the problem found by the dealer. 4 Wheelers Supply was the last place
that had their wrenches on it.

When I took it down there (before taking it to the dealer), they told me
they were not sure what the noise was but that I could probably keep on
driving it. If it got worse, I could come back.

I am not flaming 4 Wheelers Supply in this post, just putting down the facts
of the case that happened to me. I would still go back to them, most
likely. I had my XJ rear axle rebuilt by a retired Jeep mechanic and I
would say his work was every bit as good....and if it makes a noise, I know
I can take it back and it will be taken care of, no problem.

I think that 4 wheelers supply generally does good work but when I was
having my transfer case problems, the drained my case and then called me to
see if I wanted them to take it out and look at it (for $300) and I said no
and they never put oil back into the case so later that week I was at jiffy
lube and they didn't measure any oil in the tcase (I was used to the noise
since the planetary gears were all messed up anyway). I had the truck in at
4 wheelers to have my front locker installed not have my tcase fixed when
all this happened.

I hope for all of the Phoenix folks sake that they have better customer
service there than at the rest of their retail outlets. As for my
experiences with them, they have shown no concern for customer service and I
will do anything I can not to send any business to them. Every person I
know that has gone into the one at least in Tucson has the same story. You
can be in the store for an hour and no one will even pretend to notice
you're there!! You can even be standing at the counter waiting for help
with someone that works there right in front of you and they won't even
acknowledge you. I've had this happen every time I've been in there, which
is at least 10 or more times, and won't be going back there any more. From
what I've heard it's the same story at all of their retail outlets, so if
you go in there, good luck!

You could get an RE Chromoly rod. Very strong. I've not had a problem w/ mine...though I did bend one about 6 months ago. The nice thing about c/m is that it really doesn't weaken much w/ a bend....and is pretty difficult to bend in the first place.

Yo --

Has anyone run a fuel cell in a CJ (or other 4x for that matter)?
I'm putting a 16 or 18 gal cell in the tub of my CJ and want to find
out if there's anything I should be aware of, problems or otherwise.

I originally ordered a 16 gal polyethelyne racing cell in a steel box
from Speedway Racing, but since then a friend donated an 18 gal
marine (boat) fuel tank. One of these is going into my '68 CJ, but I
won't know which until I get a chance to look at the Speedway cell.
The marine tank will be pretty raw and I'd have to make a box for it
as well as plumb the filler to the fender.

Anyone know what the vehicle laws are for gas tanks - can I even use
a racing fuel cell in a road legal car? I can get a tip valve for
the Speedway cell so next time I get my CJ upside down I don't dump
fuel everywhere.

Just looking for the gotchas of running a fuel cell, aside from the
obvious loss of space and cost.

Oh, FWIW, my original 10 gal tank was mounted under the driver's
seat. I'm tying my new seats into the rollcage and can't run the
original tanks, so if anyone's looking for a early (pre 72) CJ gas
tank I'd be willing to sell (cheap) the one I'm replacing.

Thanks all,
Jeff

Good day: Just wanted to give a public shout out to Mike Chatfield for
leading this past Saturday's Jamboree pre-run of the Jack Handle trail.
Great job, Mike. Though it takes a while to actually get back to the trail
(it's IN there), Jack Handle is a rugged little 3.5-4.0 rockfest. Evidently
the recent monsoon runoff has made it a bit more challenging than it used
to be. The two biggest obstacles are waterfall-type deals that are fun. Our
entire group of YJs, CJs and XJs (and a Sami for good measure) made it
through with little carnage. The weirdest thing? Not a single TJ on this
run. Strange.

Anyone have a writeup or some pictures they'd like to share?

Prior to the installation, gear changes were very smooth, now I have to pause

this normal or are their other adjustments that should be made? Any help is

funny you should bring this up......I almost bought a fuel cell for
my truck this weekend. The only reason I didn't get one was because
I was concerned about the location of the fuel pickup. All of the
cells I looked at were set up for drag racing and had the fuel pickup
located on the rear wall of the cell. None of them had any type of
pick up tube inside the cell.......just a port in the side with an AN-
8 fitting. This arrangement would be fine for driving on level
surfaces and for going UP hills, but when driving DOWN a hill all of
the fuel would slosh to the front of the cell away from the pickup.
This would only be a concern when the fuel level was below half.

Other than that little problem, it seems like a great idea. Check
out this link for lots of cells and cell accessories:

Subject: [TR] Sat, Sep 16 - Jack Handle Trip Report

What a hot day it turned out to be!

I met up with Rick (XJ), John (CJ) and Dion (YJ) at the Florence
Junction Texaco. After talking to another group (one with an AZVJC
Sticker) that was prerunning another trail, we headed on in to the
ASA4WDC Jamboree campsite.

After studying the map for a bit, and picking up Steve (YJ) who will
be the Tail Gunner for the Jamboree, we headed on down toward
Martinez Canyon. Jack Handle takes off to the left up one of the
washes on the way to Martinez Cabin/Coke Ovens. After turning out of
Box Canyon you head up and over an interesting ridge with large rock
outcroppings. After you come down the other side, about 1/2 mile you
will find a windmill on the left; this is where Jack Handle starts
and finishes.

After scouting around a bit by the Windmill, we locked in and headed
up the wash. Pretty easy going at first with a few rocks just big
enough to grab your diff. A trail leads off to the left a little way
up the wash, this is where the loop comes back into the wash on the
way out. Next the wash split, I got out to investigate. One wash
was clearly the route as it had tire tracks and a tight waterfall.
The other route had no tracks and an obstacle that would easily turn
this run into a 4.5(+).

Water had been rushing down creating a small hole in front of the
waterfall. This caused everyone to scrape their front spring
shackles a little on the way up. It was definitly a tight squeeze as
I'm sure Rick would tell you; I believe he had only a few inches left
and right to spare. About this time, a couple more vehicles showed
up behind us. I don't remember the names, but the vehicles were an
XJ and a Suzuki Sammi.

The trail continues up the winding wash, with a few solid 3.5(+) to
4.0 obstacles. All along the way there are rocks just waiting to
grab a diff and hang you up, so tire placement is key. About noon,
we came to a place where a trail split off to the right. After a
brief journey up the wash, we realized that we needed to take that
trail. The obstacles in front of us were definitly 4.5(+), if
passable at all. After a lesson in backing down a narrow wash, I
became the tail gunner.

The trail continues a little way up the wash, winding its way to the
top, and comes out on an old mining trail. This trail follows the
ridge and allows you to look down on the wash you just came up; then
dumps you back in the wash at the beginning.

Overall, I'd say that the ASA4WDC Trail rating (3.5+)is about
accurate, although a full size would definitly find it more difficult.

After returning to the main wash, we split up as John and Dion wanted
to head down Box Canyon. Rick, the other XJ, the Suzi and I went
back up Box Canyon, playing on a few of the post monsoon obstacles.
All in all, this is going to be a nice trail to run for the Jamboree,
but I wouldn't want to do it again until it cools off.

Thanks to everyone who came out, I hope you had a good time, even as
hot as it was.

- Mike Chatfield

We've got one in stock if anyone is interested. Runs $106.80 +
shipping. We add the shipping because that is what it cost to get it to
us and that is what would have been charged to get it to you. Rather
than mark all of our prices up to include shipping and not be all
correct for different areas, etc, etc, etc, we give piece part pricing
and then charge on a per person basis for shipping. You pick it up from
us at our place, we charge the shipping it cost to get it to us. We
ship it directly to you, you pay the shipping to get it to you. Sounds
backwards from most companies, but we believe it saves YOU, the
customer, money by not having us factor in a shipping charge that might
be less for you because it is based on a guy in Iowa. You know what I
mean?
