Keith,
What you describe sounds normal to me. The first time my easy locker popped
I got out and look under the truck to check things out.

Did anyone else see the special paid program on the other night about Toyota
Land Rovers. This new rig is definitely for the easy rider. It does
everything from computer controlled 4-wheel locker system, to automatic hill
descent. They claim you never have to use the brakes if you use that system
(HA!) It also has a switch for automatic lift control up to 2 inches I
think. The computer even control the height on the highway when going over
55mph to automatically lowering the rig for aero dynamic. Not to mention the
rest of the toys, including leather and controlled a/C and heater to heated
seats. AND, AND it only cost: starts at 39,000. I guess I wont be running
down to get one very soon!!!

I have a Lockrite in the front and a No-Slip in the rear and use Lucas oil
additive in both. This was recommended by a couple of installers and I don't
notice any noise, just an occasional chirp around corners. They work great. This
is in a CJ5.

Subject: dana 300 twin shifter kit
Ever since I put the lock-right in the front, I've been thinking it would
sure be nice if I could shift into 2-low. It's been almost six months since
I've broken anything major, so I have enough saved up to spring for a twin
shifter kit. (Come to think of it, my last major breakage was a U-joint and
front axle shaft that was mangled by making a tight turn on slickrock in
Moab... It wouldn't have happened if it was in 2 wheel drive.)
So here are my questions: Is the kit by Curry Enterprises the only one out
there? What are my other options? Is it absolutely necessary to go to the
twin shifters to get 2 wheel low? Is there anyone that has installed the
Curry twin shifter kit? Is it a bolt-on replacement, or is any custom
drilling/grinding/welding required?
Thanks,

Darren, I don't know if its necessary, but my Wagoneer has a D300 and while
I was parking it, I like to shift to 4wd low so it barely moves and I can
fool around, and realized it had a shift between N and 4L
the knob is labeled:
4H
2H
N
4L
But when I shifted I felt between N and 4L that I was moving low but not on
4wd, I jumped out of it (while it was moving) and saw that my front
driveshaft was not spinning but it was going SLOW (on 2L)
I took off the shifter boot and couldn't find any grinding or anything
unusual. I don't know if the previous owner modified it, or what happened.
My Wagoneer has a Crate 289 engine, T18a (6.32:1) and D300) a great drive
train but too long for a CJ IMO.

I had a 79 CJ7 that behaved the same way. The knob didn't have 2L marked on
it, but there was a 2-low between neutral and 4-low. But the previous owner
of my present Jeep did a custom linkage job, and it shifts in a U pattern
now. The upper left corner is 2-hi. Shifting down puts it into 4-hi, and
then shifting to the right and up puts it into 4-lo. So going from 2-hi to
4-lo requires shifting down, to the right, and back up. Strange...
Jesus, you also mentioned you had a T18a with a 6.32:1 ratio first gear.
What's the ratio of a normal T18? Where are the identifying marks that
might tell me which transmission I have? I bought my jeep from a dealer who
had no clue what transmission or engine was in it. (They told me it had a
304 V8, too, and it was actually a 360. I didn't find this out until after
I got it home and inspected it more thoroughly. Bonus for me!) The reason
I ask is that even with 35" tires and stock R&P gears, it seems that my
first gear is still much lower than most other people with a T18 or similar
transmission.

Darren, since you have a CJ, cant you just shift your T-case into4-low and unlock your front hubs??? your driveshaft and axle shaftswould still spin but you really couldnt break anything in your frontaxle. i dunno, seems cheaper than buying a twin stick kit. also ihave the D20 t-case and i can shift between N and 4-low and be in2-low. i always thought that the only advantage to having the twinsticks is that you could shift into front wheel drive. hope this helps Joey--- In az_vjc@egroups.com, "Darren Richards" <darren.richards@h...>wrote:> Ever since I put the lock-right in the front, I've been thinking itwould> sure be nice if I could shift into 2-low. Well, that's what I've been doing for almost four years now. (except for
the time I broke the front axle/ujoint...) It's just a pain to have to jump
out and unlock the hubs, so I usually don't. I just make wider turns
instead. 2-low would come in especially handy for Moab wheelin', where
there are often short sections of slickrock between obstacles.

Darren if I'm not wrong, its a J shifting pattern, or so. My CJ7 had that
pattern and was hard to shift and I ended changing the tcase for one with
the straight line pattern.
I know it is a T18a because when I got the Wagoneer, the clutch was burnt so
I had to replace it and took the tranny/tcase down to paint them and found
the T18a cast on it.
I might be wrong but as far as trannies on 70er-80s Jeeps are:
T150 3:1 1st gear, 3 speed good if you drag race or something hahha,
worthless for crawling (I had it)
T176 4:1 1st gear, 4 speed and a good common choice
T18a 6.32:1 1st gear, 4 speed low granny, the best ever Jeep put on,
uncommon and was as an option on a few 78-79 CJs
I don't know if the T18 with 4:1 1st gear was ever on Jeeps, could be too.
If I remember right, the T176 has an aluminum cover. Ill find the pics of
my T18s and try to come with an article for October.
Hope it helps.
BTW my D20 on the CJ has 2L too, as my D300,

There are two different sounds my lock-right makes. There's the
click-click-click sound that is audible if I've got the clutch in going
around a corner. If I accelerate slightly around a corner, the noise goes
away almost completely. Then there's the occasional POP. I drive my jeep
to work every day, and I usually get a big pop about once a day or every
other day. I've gotten used to it, but it does turn heads.
I have lock-right's in both diffs, and the one in the front was giving me
some problems at first. It would repeately pop loudly when it should have
been locked. (i.e., spinning my tires climbing a snowy hill.) I took it
apart again, and noticed the teeth on the lock-right were a little bit
chewed up, but not too bad. At the advice of the local 4-wheel drive shop,
I replaced both of the thrust washers (is that what they're called) on
either side of the carrier, and my problem went away completely. That was
about three years ago, and I haven't had a problem since, even with the
slightly chipped teeth on the lock-rite.
So if it's popping loudly on a regular basis, you might want to try
replacing those thrust washers if you didn't do it when you installed the
locker. They are only a buck or two each, but you've gotta disassemble the
whole thing again...
Oh, and you should be using whatever gear oil your owner's manual
recommends. I think I use 85W90.

I'm not sure what "loud" is to you, but mine has had some clicking
around corners. I used a limited slip additive and it was a little
quieter but still noticable. Are the clearances all within specs? I
had a problem with that on the first install and broke the cross pins
and it locked solid all the time. Other than that, it wasn't too bad.

One of my neighbors that I wheel with is a veteran of the Camel Trophy which
is an international offroad competition for which Land Rover provides the
vehicles. On a few occasions I've wheeled with some of my neighbor's Camel
Trophy buddies who drive Land Rovers. I can say that Land Rovers are very
capable offroad vehicles - especially when modified.
Last summer, we all ran the Rubicon without any problems. Included in the
group was a Range Rover, a Discovery and a Defender. All flew threw with
flying colors.
For those of you familiar with V-8 Hill out at the P4W Ranch, you know that
not too many vehicles make it up that hill. But I've seen a Land Rover
Discovery make it and it made it fairly easily.
Before Jeep produced the TJ, I think the most capable stock vehicle made was
the Land Rover Defender.

I'm asking $180 for all 5 wheels or make me an offer.
They have many scratches around the edges of the wheels but the rest of the

holes were enlarged for the Warn manual hub conversion.
I switched back to the original factory wheels that came on my TJ.

Thanks,

The Jeep is not typically a daily driver, the tires in question are the afore mentioned Wrangler MT/R's, the answer would be...?

Unlike the Powertrax Lockrite, the Powertrax Noslip does not use any thrust washers.

Darren Richards wrote:
Oh, and you should be using whatever gear oil your owner's manual
recommends. I think I use 85W90.

will be meeting at the Circle K in Florence at 7:00 am. We should be heading

should be at the trails end by Noon or a little later. If you would like to

I have five 15x8 factory aluminum wheels for sale. They are the 5 hole
wheels with 5.5" backspacing. Bolt pattern is 5 on 4.5.
I'm asking $180 for all 5 wheels or make me an offer.
They have many scratches around the edges of the wheels but the rest of the
wheel looks fine. 2 of them do not have center caps anymore since the center
holes were enlarged for the Warn manual hub conversion.
I switched back to the original factory wheels that came on my TJ.
