Hi Ralph

I'm sure that the trail could be run in 2wd (I've seen most of it done that
way when my partner broke his truck last time), but whether or not your
friend will enjoy it very much depends greatly on his/her driving skill and
experience. It could be an enjoyable challenge -- then again, it could be
a white knuckle death ride. I ran part of it in 2wd last time (one of those
"if he can do it, so can I" kinda things), but quickly decided to go back to
running the hills in 4lo so that I didn't spend so much time on the brakes.
A lot depends on how the vehicle is set up too.......an open rear diff,
highway gears, and street tires would make it much more difficult.

You might want to let your friend ride along with you and get an idea of the
trail layout and make a judgement afterwards as to its "runnability" in
his/her vehicle.

If you're leaving Tucson around 9am, you'll probably be hitting the trail
around 11 to 11:30. If you wanna meet somewhere I'll be happy to tag along.

Len

Has anyone planned a run for this weekend? I have heard about the Tucson
group doing Crown King but are there any others planned? I'll go almost
anywhere from light to moderate (meaning 2 to 4), but I definitely need a
fix after (ugh) another week on the road. Wildcat run, planned run,
organized, disorganized, one Jeep, 10 Jeeps. Anything.

I have a K&N Filter for a stock air box in a TJ. It apparently does
not fit in a YJ because it is too wide. It was around $40 and was
only in the truck for about a week before I went to work on my fender
with a hack saw (sad story) so I'd like to get $20 for it. Let me

Hey Everyone, I have a (really) used Black YJ (strapless) Bikini top. The side straps are broken/torn, but it works fine as a sunshade. It's too ripped to use it in the NW - where it needs to keep out rain, but it would do fine out there for keeping out the sun. It's not pretty, but it works, and it's free. :) First one to email me gets it. I'll even pay to send it to ya!

I just left Discount Tire on Tanque Verde here in Tucson and felt I should
share my experience with the group. I went there originally to use my
warranty to replace a BFG 31 x 10.50 AT. Nate, the salesman, remembered a
conversation we'd had over a year ago about swapping to 33 x 10.50 BFG MT's.
We talked a little more and the conversation came around to the new Wrangler
MT/R's, we had already discussed the thrashed condition of two of my BFG's.
Nate then offered to apply the replacement warranty for those two tires
toward the cost of five new 33 x 12.50 Wrangler MT/R's if I wanted to swap
to the larger, and I think better, tire resulting in a discount of over
$200. While I'm sure he probably gets a commision off of the sale, I was
very pleased and impressed by his willingness to try and work a deal to get
me the tires I wanted.

I have been a customer of Discount Tire for several years now and due to
this latest experience will continue to be loyal to them. If anyone is in
need of tires I would ask you to give them a call or stop by and see what
they can do for you, for those in Tucson, stop by and see Nate, good
customer service should be rewarded.

Im not sure about fitting a wide track....

A rear wide track CJ axle is 55 inches in width. Perhaps it is a better
candidate for a narrow track or ealier CJ.

Subject: Locker Questions???

Hello Gang,
I just installed a Lock-Rite in my 87 XJ, and I have a few questions:
During the normal on-road driving it seems to pop pretty load when turning.
I have never been in a rig with a lock rite, or ever had a locker before in
any rig of mine. Does this sound normal? I have heard some others on the
club web say they had some noise with theirs, but I didn't think it would be
that loud. Under heavy acceleration it does great, and we did a little off
road, and it performed great. but on the road it is noisey, pops loud. IS
this normal, and is there anything else I should know???
What gear oil should I be using???
I appreciate all of your help in this matter, Thank you......

Front or rear? If its in the rear I would say its normal.

Make sure the tire pressure is the same in the front tires... this seems to
help mine.

Popping from your Lockrite is perfectly normal, and as others have
mentioned, be sure the tires have the same air pressure. Concerning the oil,
I use 85/140 gear oil. It's thicker than the 80/90 that comes in the diff so
it's handles the heat here well and I've noticed my Lockrite is quieter with
the thicker stuff.

the kit I had for my 35c would also work on the 35. Does this sound right?
The manual also stated that this could be done as well. I don't know allot

Casper,
I have the No-Slip in the rear of my 91 XJ. Its similar to the lockright,
only its supposed to be quieter. I get quite a few small pops while turning,
and an occasional bang that makes me think I should be carrying a spare
axle. This usually only happens on the trail when I least expect it. From
what I've heard from the Lockright, yours is acting normal. I switched to
140 Wt. gear oil, and that helped quiet it down a bit. It also seemed to get
quieter after each of the first 4 or 5 trail rides, so take it out use it,
as it will probably quiet down a bit. See you next month for NAXJA Fall
Fling. Its gonna be great!

Yep, sounds pretty normal, especially if you are running a manual tranny. For
whatever reason, the manual tranny seems to bring out the "worst" in the Lock
Right in terms of noises and manors. All of the ones that I have heard with an
automatic behave much better. But all-in-all, yours sounds about right on
track. I have one in my CJ7 with an auto, and while coming around corners
(especially in populated parking lots) I tend to turn alot of heads with the
clack-clack-clack noise that I get. Gotta love it.

There are two different sounds my lock-right makes. There's the
click-click-click sound that is audible if I've got the clutch in going
around a corner. If I accelerate slightly around a corner, the noise goes
away almost completely. Then there's the occasional POP. I drive my jeep
to work every day, and I usually get a big pop about once a day or every
other day. I've gotten used to it, but it does turn heads.

I have lock-right's in both diffs, and the one in the front was giving me
some problems at first. It would repeately pop loudly when it should have
been locked. (i.e., spinning my tires climbing a snowy hill.) I took it
apart again, and noticed the teeth on the lock-right were a little bit
chewed up, but not too bad. At the advice of the local 4-wheel drive shop,
I replaced both of the thrust washers (is that what they're called) on
either side of the carrier, and my problem went away completely. That was
about three years ago, and I haven't had a problem since, even with the
slightly chipped teeth on the lock-rite.

So if it's popping loudly on a regular basis, you might want to try
replacing those thrust washers if you didn't do it when you installed the
locker. They are only a buck or two each, but you've gotta disassemble the
whole thing again...

Oh, and you should be using whatever gear oil your owner's manual
recommends. I think I use 85W90.
