They closed just over 200 acres on Friday. People wouldn't stay on the
trails, and ripped it all up. I've seen the area, and I can't say I
disagree with the closure, unfortunately. They couldn't let it keep
going the direction it was, and I'm not sure what else they could
effectively do.

I would post the article here, but that would be a copyright violation.

Actually, according to their little legal thing, posting a link to it is
a violation of their copyright. I don't think they could enforce that,
though.

First - When measuring wheels, do you measure the width from the outside

Second - Would running wheels with 5.25" backspacing and 1" wheel spacer be
the same, loadwise, as running wheels that have 4.25" backspacing? What I'm
trying to figure out is if it will pose unwanted stress on thee wheel
bearings.

I have ONE extra ticket to tonights Diamondbacks game, and can't seem to

The game starts at 6:35, so act fast!! I'm going to be leaving in about 15

Subject: Question about road to Crown King

As I have never been up to Crown King I would like to know if the
road from Lake Pleasant to Crown King would be passable to a
two-wheel drive Grand Cherokee. It has more actual clearance in
the middle than my 4x4 ZJ because there is no TC hanging down. We
could also disconnect the sway bars so it would flex as good as a
4x4 also (the two wheel drive has the exact same suspension as
the 4 by, just a straight axle instead of a diff).
Could also put tow hooks on it if needed.
Any thoughts from some of you who have been there?
Thanks in advance.

Ralph

BTW, we will be going up with or without the 4x2 on Saturday,
will probably get a late start as we won't leave Tucson till
about 9:00am as wife is working till 8:30am. Anyone interested in
coming along will be welcome. A few other vehicles (not sure who
yet) will be with us. Plans not crystalized as yet.

Hi,
I'm leading a Tucson Rough Riders club run this Saturday..
You don't have to be a member to join, and it would count as one of two
"required" runs if you do decide to join.. This is a mild run, rated 2.0-,
suitable for "stock" Jeeps and full size vehicles... I've included a
description below that was posted in our newsletter..:

Date: 09/16/00

Meeting Place: McDonalds Rest. on Palo Verde just south of I-10 (east side
of Palo Verde), 5225 S Palo Verde.

Time: 8:00 am

Destination: Hog and Adobe Canyons, Santa Rita Mountains.

Rating: 2.0.. Suitable for stock vehicles and full size vehicles.. In
Adobe itself, there are areas where young Mesquite trees are thick and
over growing the trail, so expect some "pinstripping"..

Offroad distance: 25 ~ 30 miles

Brief description: We'll be taking one of two ways into the Canyon and
perhaps coming out the other way.. Adobe Canyon is unique in that there
are some really interesting geological formations.. Rocks that appear
solid, yet crumble when you try to pick the up, etc... Our destination is
Bathtup Tank up in the Canyon itself.. This is a natural (with some
concrete help) bathtub size tank that's about 15 feet up.. There is a
metal ladder that's attached to the rock face to allow for climbing up
into the side canyon and the tank.. It's a super lush area and a great
place for lunch.. A few hundred yards from the tank (can't drive to it,
easy hike), is El Pilar, a verticle needle rock formation, maybe 20 ~ 30
feet high.. Those want want can take a little hike over to it.. The trail
in takes us into Hog Canyon for several miles and then up to the ridge
between Hog and Adobe.. The ridge offers some stunning views down into
Adobe, from way above Bathtup and El Pilar.. Besides the tank itself and
El Pilar, and the interesting rock formations, there are real fossils in
this canyon.. Those who wish may dig for those in the canyon sides.. We
found a lot on bi-valve (clams, etc) type fossils a month or so when I
went last.. The last two runs have produced tons of wildlife, hawks, rock
squirrels and literally, dozens of deer..
Bring lunch and water (cameras).. If all goes well, and depending on how
long everyone wants for kicking around the tank and El Pilar and look for
fossils, this will be a short day trip, returning to pavement in the early
afternoon, (2 ~ 3 pm?).
Please call to confirm: 743-3920

It depends on what you are trying to do. By pushing the wheels out you aren't
changing the tire scrub radius but you are definitely putting more stress not
only on the wheel bearings, but also the wheel studs and steering assy. If you
plan on putting on larger, wider tires the stress will be magnified. The best
thing to do is to use wheels with the correct backspacing. regardless of what
you do, plan on investing in some sort of steering box brace too.

200 acres at Mormon Lake being closed to vehicles Traffic scars are
growing

By Judd Slivka
The Arizona Republic
September 9, 2000

Maybe it was the quad-wheeler that rangers watched
chase an elk this summer.
Maybe it was the tire tracks in the lake bed.

Whatever the final straw, forest officials Friday
closed the popular Mormon Lake
area to motorized vehicles, including those that go
off the highway, such as
all-terrain vehicles.

Coconino National Forest officials put up signs Friday
advising those who enjoy
riding into the Mormon Lake basin and adjacent Fulton
Canyon that motorized
vehicles are no longer welcome.

A three-year dry spell that has nearly turned Mormon
Lake into Mormon
Meadow, coupled with ever-increasing use of the area,
forced officials into it,
said Bruce Grecco, Mormon Lake district ranger.

"The amount of damage people have caused has grown
exponentially over the
last several years," said Karen Malis-Clark, a
Coconino National Forest
spokeswoman. "It's all the people taking off the roads
and creating new trails."

In a meadow at the lake's southern end, Grecco said,
off-highway vehicle users
have carved a racetrack.

"The Mormon Lake closure is something that comes from
us trying to deal with
and mitigate the impacts from off-highway vehicle and
recreational use in the
area," Grecco said. "Over the last several years, it's
becoming more and more
popular for people to come up here and camp and
recreate. …

"It's not just on weekends or holidays, but day after
day, and the land can't take
it."

About 120 acres have been affected by heavy use - new
trails cut into the basin,
people driving across parts of the droughty lake bed,
duck nests disturbed - and
a touch over 200 acres will be closed. People will
still be able to camp in the
area but won't be able to go off-road.

Sanford Cohen, president of the Prescott Open Trails
Association, was not
happy at the news Friday but said he understood the
move.

"The fact is these are the kind of losses we're going
to suffer in the (off-highway
vehicle) community," he said, "until people realize
they're going to have to stay on
marked trails."

Officials will try to rehabilitate the closed area by
reseeding and working to
prevent erosion. The area's eastern boundary is Forest
Highway 3. The Mormon
Lake Loop road, Forest Road 90, makes up the western,
southern and northern
boundaries.

Questions should be directed to the Mormon Lakes
Ranger District at
1-(520)-774-1147 or the Peaks Ranger District at
1-(520)-526-0866.

Reach the reporter at judd.slivka@a...

Load should be the same on the bearings; however, spacers are not a good
idea because they can load the lugs more depending on how they are made.

Subject: INFO

Hey again

This is a multipart message with info on some businesses and trailers.

For those of you that were asking about trailers, I contacted an old
friend of mine that owns a trailer manufacturing business in AJ and he
said he would be willing to give a 100.00 EA. discount on a group
purchase. The trailers are 16' with 83" between the fenders. He also can
build out the floor in front and behind the fenders and for those that
have extra wide he will reinforce the fenders so you can drive over
them. I believe he said 1400 for the trailer. Tandem axle, electric
brakes etc. His company is Excel trailers. Ken said to call him
personally at 480-814-4470 to discuss the quantity, price etc. Any way,
just FYI if you can use it. I do not get anything out of this just
trying to help.

Second, I have been doing allot of work on the CJ for awhile ( which is
why I have not been able to make any trips ) and would like to tell of
some very good experiences I have had.

1. I installed a Performer manifold and Quad carburetor. If you are in
the market for a four barrel call Gregg Kenyon in the North West valley.
He sold me a Quad that you could not tell was not new, set up for my
engine for 200.00 including gasket etc. I installed the carb, manifold,
set up the linkage and fired it up. No adjusting necessary and runs
great. It also has an electric choke. Gregg is a great guy and you won't
be disappointed. He may be a little hard to get ahold of as he does
allot of traveling but it is worth it. He is just east of I17 and
Greenway. His number is 602-942-2465. I found out about him from several
friends that have FJ40's with Chevy V8's that also recommend him.

2. If you need a drive shaft I recommend Ray at Gold Star. He is at
Southern and Center in Mesa. He can make up anything and has been used
for years by several local rock crawlers. He made me a rear CV shaft for
my CJ5. With new front yoke that he got for me it cost 266 total. I am
not familiar with CV's but this seemed like a good price. His number is
480-649-0705.

3. If you need any fab work done in the east valley, Todd McCullen can
do it. I had a list of about 10 things I wanted done and he handled it
all. He is also on the web with his company called Desert Fabrication.
His number is 480-982-6162.

4. Jay Eller! What can I say, he got me a great price on my winch and
even held it for a week until I could get over to his place. He is also
making me a CUSTOM pair of rock sliders ( to clear a certain emblem I
put on the sides of the CJ ). Sorry about the extra cutting Jay.

Well this is just my opinion and info if you need it. I like to put up
what I feel is positive info on good people as there is plenty of bad
businesses out there. Have a great night.

Bob

For the kind of driving we do here in AZ siping the tires would not be a good idea. The dirt and rocks would get stuck in the sipes and break off chunks of the tire. Siping is only really beneficial in rain, snow and ice. It will make your tires run cooler in these conditions by allowing water to collect in the sipes. Siping tires was originally intended for 18-wheelers for highway traction in bad weather and to prolong the life of the tires. Hope this helps.
