Subject: Can't I Get a Wave
OK, just a little rant...
I was driving home tonight down Kolb (Tucson) tonight around 9:30. I came
upon a nicely modified dark green YJ. I could tell it wasn't a poseur-mobile
as I also noticed a sticker from a local 4 wheel drive club (Rough Riders).
Anyway, I pulled up alongside to give a wave. The driver apparently didn't
see me. I kept rolling along. I tried to allow the other driver to catch up
and even slowed my speed a bit. Still, I couldn't get a glance in my general
direction. We were even stopped at two different stop lights. Yet, the other
driver simply stopped short in my blind spot. I couldn't even give a "Hey,
nice Jeep" shout out the window. I realize that I, in an unmodified TJ, must
initiate a wave to a nicely modified YJ (as mandated by Jeep Wave protocol).
However, it is very difficult to initiate a wave when the other driver won't
even give a glance my way!! What gives? Are we not all Jeep brothers and
sisters????(FWIW, the driver was female - cute too) Where is the LOVE????
Anyway, just had to get it off my chest. I realize that you may have thought
I'm a Jeep Poseur as I'm in an unmodified (for the moment), stock TJ and I
have my frilly personalized ASU license plate (Go Devils!). But, I assure
you, I soon will have a nice rig. I only hope I can get a wave next time!
Again, for what it's worth, if you happen to be the one who was driving
along side me this evening, all is forgiven. Just realize that I share the
same love for the world's greatest vehicles that you do and I'm probably not
the only one. Just give me (and others) a chance to wave next time so I can
show you my appreciation for your vehicle and you can return the same! And,
by the way, nice Jeep!!
Brent

My name is Bill, and next time stop by! Closer inspection and a little more
light would reveal my true "mild mannered" identity! Seriously, I don't know

not my deodorant this time (I brought it!).
Don't let the 240 pound Bald guy with a goatee, drinkin' Tequila intimidate

Honest! Just ask anyone who owns anything but a Jeep, they'll set you

Those of you that don't know me, visit my site, find out what I drive,

Hi Brent,
It's nice to know that even with a "virgin" TJ you have mastered the
knowledge of Jeep Wave Protocals. LOL...just kidding. :-)
If you see me on the road I'll be more than happy to return a wave and,
if it's possible, pull over and talk Jeep for a few. You can't really miss
my YJ if you see me, it's red with a spice colored soft top, (usually no
top), a 4" lift, cut off fenders, a custom snorkel through the top of the
hood, Tucson Roughrider & AZVJC plus the required "Work Sucks, I'm Going
Wheeling" stickers, and lots of dents.

Hi Brent,
Sounds like my jeep that you are referring too. It would have been about that time last night that my wife was driving home in the jeep. Unfortunately, she is unschooled in the way of jeeps. We have owned the jeep for two years now, and she has yet to catch the "jeep bug". Don't worry, I am working diligently to "show her the light" :), but right now she sees the jeep as "just another car" (of course slightly modified).

*laugh* I sent him a message off-line saying something like that!! I tried to give 3 "excuses":
1) Women don't wave as much - sadly true (at least in the NW), but highly unlikely if it was a modified Jeep with a club sticker)
2) Her husband's/boyfriend's rig, and she just didn't know the rules ;)
3) Had something else on her mind (something like job stuff, etc).

Can't argue with "free". But the price they show is $189 and that's an
awful lot for a basic unit with almost no features. You can get radios
that include features like dual channel monitor, full channel scan, weather
band, etc. for far less than $189.
The Cobra Electronics website (http://www.cobraelec.com) appears to show
the same model for $59.95. (The CyberRebate site doesn't list the model
number so I'm going on appearance.)

Subject: Very happy experience
I just left Discount Tire on Tanque Verde here in Tucson and felt I should share my experience with the group. I went there originally to use my warranty to replace a BFG 31 x 10.50 AT. Nate, the salesman, remembered a conversation we'd had over a year ago about swapping to 33 x 10.50 BFG MT's. We talked a little more and the conversation came around to the new Wrangler MT/R's, we had already discussed the thrashed condition of two of my BFG's. Nate then offered to apply the replacement warranty for those two tires toward the cost of five new 33 x 12.50 Wrangler MT/R's if I wanted to swap to the larger, and I think better, tire resulting in a discount of over $200. While I'm sure he probably gets a commision off of the sale, I was very pleased and impressed by his willingness to try and work a deal to get me the tires I wanted.
I have been a customer of Discount Tire for several years now and due to this latest experience will continue to be loyal to them. If anyone is in need of tires I would ask you to give them a call or stop by and see what they can do for you, for those in Tucson, stop by and see Nate, good customer service should be rewarded.

Subject: Re: Can't I Get a Wave(Safer to Wave)
I have done this too while driving my wifes Stratus, and you are right they
look at me as if a I have two heads.
It is hard not to wave, you see the Jeep and the hand begins to respond
before you even think. I think this may be the cause of many Jeepers
accidents when not driving their Jeep.
The hand begins the wave, first the fingers move to ungrib the stearing
wheel, the palm begins to pull away from the wheel, suddenly the mind
realizes the hands intentions and sends signals to stop, when the signals
are ignored the mind sends signals to the opposite hand to stop the other
hand at all cost. Now both hands off the wheel fighting to wave or not to
wave, the car begins to weave, the mind sends signals now to the feet to hit
the brakes, meanwhile the hands are entangled in a brutal battle, knuckles
popping, tendons straining, abrasions to the skin. As the cars speed is
reduced the mind realizes the car is totally out of control and applies the
brakes completely, screatching the car to a halt when BAM, it is rear ended
sending the car into the car in front of it. The Jeep has now passed and is
gone, the hands stop the fight, each to tired to move, the mind realizes
that certain bodily functions have been performed by other regions of the
Jeeper and decides to cause the body to pass out and avoid further
embarrassment.
Much safer to just wave anyway!!!

More Protection for Mormon Lake
Flagstaff, AZ — In order to better protect the Mormon Lake basin and
adjacent Fulton Canyon, the Forest Service has closed these areas to
off-road motorized vehicles. Since Mormon Lake is the largest natural
lake in Arizona and an important habitat for many kinds of wildlife,
this decision will improve watershed, wildlife and vegetation
conditions. Ever increasing ATV and off-road vehicle use has degraded
these areas by creating a myriad of tracks across the landscape. Vehicle
use disturbs wildlife while the resultant scars denude meadows and
increase erosion. This decision will allow the land to heal and continue
to be home to the large number of birds, elk and other animals that live
there.
The area closed to vehicles includes the entire lakebed within the
Mormon Lake Loop Road and Forest Highway 3, and the Fulton Canyon area
on the south end of the lake. Designated roads will remain open.
Snowmobiles will continue to be allowed to operate in these areas when
the snowpack is adequate.
Dispersed camping opportunities for those who like to camp outside
campgrounds will still be available along open roads. Other recreation
activities such as hunting, canoeing and bird watching will continue but
will require a bit more walking on the part of the forest user.

Hi Brent,
It's nice to know that even with a "virgin" TJ you have mastered the
knowledge of Jeep Wave Protocals.

"We need to move forward to provide protection to the land, while
enabling folks to use and enjoy this popular area of the National
Forest," affirms Bruce Greco, Mormon Lake District Ranger.
