You've definately got some sort of limited slip in with that type of
cross pin (duh, huh?). My Model20 rear had a limited slip and had that
very same type of cross shaft. The one with the roll pin is an open
carrier type. Why it is that way, I do not know. Probably because the
carrier is too thin on the outsides for the roll pin method due to the
extra space needed for the clutch packs. I have never looked at a D44
limited slip rear, but your description sounds alot like mine
(Model20). I, of course, buttoned the whole thing back up so I could
drive it to work the next day, hunted down an open carrier, and re-did
the whole thing. YIKES!! Don't know if that helps. Sounds like they
gave you a no-slip for an open carrier rather than a limited slip
version. I'm sure there instructions probably cover the open carriers
because the limited slip carriers are a little more rare. In any case,
I hope this helps somehow.
By the way, how's business????

Yes......with SOA I suspect you will definately need to lengthen the drive
shafts in order to utilitze the suspension travel that you will get. I'm not
sure where you will end up, though, since you are changing all of the drive
train around. I suspect that you will definately need to run a CV rear as you
stated. So you obviously can make this one custom. As for the front, a
standard u-joint style shaft is fine. You shouldn't need a CV shaft. My CJ7
is SOA with 2" springs and all I did was have my front shaft lengthened and ran
a CV in the rear. The front has standard u-joints. So I guess this answers
your other question. Yes, the front drive shaft can just be lengthened.
Gloeco should be able to take care of that for you. Hope that helps. I
wouldn't worry about a CV shaft for the front unless you have some special
reason for it. I guess if you plan on doing 45 mph in 4wd, then you might need
one, but even then.......... :-)

I would suggest checking out the Grand Cherokee forum at
www.jeepsunlimited.com. There is a ton of useful information on that site.
Make sure you use the search function, and there is also an old grand
cherokee forum on that site that you can search. Also I personally think
you should go with the 2" budget boost, new shocks, swaybar disco's (depends
on what you'll be doing with it), the quadradrive system and the upcountry
package.

Subject: Jeep Girls Run vs. NW Weather...
OK - someone send me a little note about what the weather is like in AZ right now. I went on the NW Lady 4x4 run...uh...the Jeep Girls Run (ALL jeeps) on Saturday. Poured rain, freezing cold. I'm now sick as a dog!! So sick I couldn't bring myself to wheel it today, so I went out with the BF in his "ZU-Zoo" Isuzu Run. Sat as a passenger (sleeping) for 1/2 the day, then met up with my jeep girls (I got to drive the Monster Isuzu Amigo at www.airamigo.com).
Tomie (one of the other Jeep Girls) should be on (or joining) this list sometime soon, she's a Wildcat stuck up here in the Seattle Area! :) We spent the better part of the afternoon trying to coat her NEW (less than 3000 miles) white TJ in mud. Whatever protectant the factory puts on it works like a charm. That thing is clean as a whistle, even after the mud!!
I'll be posting some pictures soon so you guys can see what the NW wheeling looks like this time of year! Meanwhile, I'm daydreaming about the warm down there in Arizona, and hoping this sore throat and ear ache goes away by work tomorrow!!

in the 90s, rather than the 100s like this weekend. Hope you get over your

*laugh* have you ever *been* to NW?!? 80 and sunny means it will rain by noon, 10% chance of rain means it will pour, and I never even heard of the term "sun breaks" before I came out here. It's the opposite of partly cloudy...i.e. cloudy, with the chance of thinking you see the sun?!? I don't know, but some crazy weatherman (all of them) said Sunday would be nice....it POURED today! I had about 1" of water in my passenger side (Boyfriend was nice, washed the Jeep for me, thought putting the drain plugs back in was a *favor*) :) NW Weather - particularly the Seattle area - seems to be impossible to predict!

hi There TJ Gill,
I can help you out. I have a Miller Mig Welder and have done my own
frame a few times. (No, not the same spot twice!) Give me a call at
602-597-4180 (work) and we can work out the details if you are
interested. I am located at Elliot and Price. However, I would not
advise welding a plate onto the frame. Usually a weld will take care of
the crack. The real task is to find out why the frame cracked in that
spot in the first place. (It could just be age) Frame steel will hold
about 40,000 PSI, welded 70 series Carbon Steel will take about 60,000 -
70,000 PSI. The weld will be stronger than the surrounding steel.
Give me a call.

Sounds like you had some real fun there. You know, trying to fly out of
your Jeep. Sooooo, when are you going to install automatically deployed
helper steps?? Your jeep is plenty tall right know on flat ground. I can
imagine it over a few humps and a giant hole in the ground. I hope that
your leg feels better and that nothing bad has happened. It most likely
is just a real bad sprain. They seem to hurt the worst!! As for the
welding I just did a couple of real slick locks for a friends truck box.
His truck box had been broken into and all of his tools had been stolen.
So I made a pair of rather indestructible locks for it and welded them
to truck box. You can wail on these locks with a sledgehammer and they
will hold. If anyone gets into that box, well they earned it. Well, have
a good one and go easy on the leg.

When = Saturday, September 30th
Time = 7:30am at McDonalds, 8:00am at the 87 turnoff
Lead = linda L
Duration = 1/2 to 3/4 of a day
We're planning on leaving the McDonalds on the NE corner of McKellips & Country Club (Mesa) at 7:30. Show up early if you'd like coffee or something to eat. If you can't make McDonalds, plan on meeting us at the turnoff of 87. Unfortunately I don't know the mile marker or the geographical description of the turnoff, but I'm sure someone who does will respond and let us know. (Doug has a write-up of Rocker Panel on the az_vjc website with coordinates of the turnoff so you can find the exact location that way)
This will also be run Monday, October 2 with the same start unless I hear back from someone who has offered to lead the Coke Ovens. So, there is also going to be a run on Monday, 10-2. If that date is better for anyone, reply to me directly and I'll get a separate post going for that date.

Well we didn't make it over to Battleship Butte, but we did get out of the
city and into the pines.
We met up with Randy Davis, Rick and Vanda Norman, Lon and Kathy Robinson,
Greg Banfield, and Keith Auble just off of Highway 74 on the Castle Hot
Springs Rd at 7am on Saturday. We waited for Chris who never showed until
7:30 then took off, figuring he could catch up with us if he was just
running late.
With an early start, there was nobody in front of us, except a small group
consisting of a Chevy PU, a Ford PU and a Jeep Wrangler; since they were
moving slower, they let us pass them. We managed to stay ahead of the heat
all the way up, stopping to play on the few challenging sections the Lake
Pleasant to Crown King trail offers. We also stopped to soak in some of the
beauty at Fort Misery and Oro Belle. Finally getting up to Crown King just
after noon. Lon, Kathy and Brandy the Trail Dog headed on back instead of
continuing down toward Prescott.
After an extended lunch at one of the local establishments in Crown King, we
packed up and took the Towers Mountain Road from Crown King to the top of
Towers Mountain. Most people believe that the mountain is named for all of
the microwave towers on top of the mountain, but it is actually named after
a miner by the name of Tower. Tower staked his claim on the mountain and
would shoot at anybody who trespassed (late 1800's); so the mountain was
aptly named "Tower's Mountain." The original plan was to find trail 216 off
of the mountain, but the only trail we found was a short dead-end trail
listed as an ATV trail -- maybe a little to narrow for Jeeps. Instead we
head on down the mountain to meet back up with the Senator Highway.
We eventually found where Trail 216 met back up with the Senator Highway,
and probably found the other trail we were looking for, trail 211, but it
wasn't marked. Since it was getting late, we decided to just head on down
the Senator Highway. Randy, Rick & Vanda wanted to camp overnight so on the
way down we kept an eye open for good camping spots. About 4 or 5 miles from
Goodwin we found a campsite they liked. Greg and Keith decided to check out
some rocks, while Anita and I decided to head on back to town.
Instead of going all the way to Prescott, we took the shorter route through
Mayer. On the way back, we ran into 2mph traffic from the Badger Springs
exit to about the Sunset Point rest area. We tuned into channel 19 on the CB
to listen to the truckers and find out what the problem was. Turned out to
be a brush fire started by a disabled vehicle that pulled off on the wrong
side of the road. Instead of pulling off and to the right, staying on the
paved shoulder, they pulled off, left, onto the median, where the dry grass
caught on fire from their hot Catalytic converters. Just a note of safety
here, never pull off and park over grass, either on-highway or off-highway.
Anyway, thanks everyone who came out and I hope you enjoyed the trip. We'll
have to do a snow run from Goodwin to Crown King this winter.

I have a ton in my digital camera, which I need to take to work to download, which I'm not at work, cause I'm sick as hell!!! :(
I will be posting pictures tomorrow night on www.thejeepgoddess.com
Couple of differences in an all-girls run (besides the girl part):
1) We all posed for pictures. When we got to the top of the mountain, we artistically arranged the jeeps to get pictures of all of them. We even got all the girls together for a "rockets kick line" and took pictures. Everyone was posing with thier Jeeps. We posed with the body damage...it was fun!
2) New Jeeps. Out of 7 vehicles, the oldest one was a 93 YJ. Then my 95YJ, then a bunch of TJs!! Not a CJ in site. Chrysler would be proud ;)
3) Lunch at the high point of the mountain was a project. I'm surprised no one brought a stove ;)
-SM
PS - And it was JEEP bikini tops - both YJs had them. We froze. Everyone is in sweats/fleece for the run. Kinda weird, eh?

Umm, I'd question the 3+ rating. The short stretch that is what I
consider the real "pass" is probably more difficult than 3+, in my
opinion. The rest of the trail is pretty easy. But I haven't been
out there lately.
Any one else agree with this?

I ran it last year with Joe West before he went BIG! He was open front
and rear with his TJ running like 31" tires (max). And I think they
were all-terrains. He had a little difficulty, but nothing major. I
would say the 3+ is about right. But like you say, it was for only
about 10-20 feet worth. The rest was pretty sedate.

I just got my new AZVJC stickers and put them on my TJ. They go well
just above the "Jeep" on the front fenders. A big thanks to Jon for

Meanwhile, I'm daydreaming about the warm down there in Arizona, and hoping this sore throat and ear ache goes away by work tomorrow!!

hi There TJ Gill,
I can help you out.
Give me a call.

your leg feels better and that nothing bad has happened.

Some of you may remember I busted up my radiator last weekend. I picked up a new one at Hawkes radiator on broadway. They were good people. I got a three core instead of the stock 2 core. I also installed a new thermostat. My temp usually ran about 210 and a few about but now it barely hits 200.

Trail Run:
Where = Rocker Panel Pass
Rating = 3+
When = Saturday, September 30th
Time = 7:30am at McDonalds, 8:00am at the 87 turnoff
Lead = linda L
Duration = 1/2 to 3/4 of a day
We're planning on leaving the McDonalds on the NE corner of McKellips & Country Club (Mesa) at 7:30.

I believe that was me that you saw last night. Probably about 5 p.m. and I
had my family in my jeep... We were out on an afternoon jaunt... I was
headed north on Lindsey... I believe I waved to you... You had a cream
colored cj??? I do have an ark welder and have done all the welding on my
jeep.. Based on opinion I could lay a decent bead on most welds.. I would
be glad to help you out... Let me know if you need the help... More than
willing to help you out.. I live at Lindsey and baseline!!
take care,
Fernando

Subject: Re: Jeep Girls Run vs. NW Weather...

Hi everybody!
I just got my new AZVJC stickers and put them on my TJ. They go well
just above the "Jeep" on the front fenders. A big thanks to Jon for
the very fast response and quick service. If you see me, holler,
wave, throw money, whatever it takes! White TJ, no doors, 33's on
black rims, big grin on drivers face.
