1. “I need help” post on the forums:
o Folk’s often post with problems with their ride on Sunday and have to drive it to work on Monday or in the eve. Fine, I have no problem with that and if I can help, I and seemingly many folks will. However, if you want my .02 worth or just a better and QUICKER answer to you malady. Here are some tips that will get you more answers and help much quicker. Either before or after you launch into your problem provide us with:
o Year, make, model of rig [‘03, Jeep, TJ]
o Specific info about the foundation of the problem. [My original 4.0 engine, 5 speed NV 3550 trans, D44 w/ARB axle, K Mart floor mats]
o Specific info about what you did prior to it not working. [I changed oil and now I have no oil pressure. Installed lift kit with lower arms only and big springs, now I have vibes at road speeds, I have done nothing else]
o Description of problem, leading up to it. [As I drive down hiway I sense some vibration but at 45 mph it kicks in hard. Jeep seems to wander from left to right and if I go faster, I get Death Wobble. When I put on the right turn signal at any speed, it all goes away. Strange sounds come from the speakers that are extremely loud after I let my 16-year-old son drive it, they only go away when I put it on KMEL country.]

o Help us help you.

2. “I need help” post and “I helped you”
o I just spent nearly and hour of my time writing and swapping e mails all day trying to find out if your problem is in a Jeep or a Junker, a four banger or a six. I gave you my opinion on your problem, did some research, sent you a couple of websites to look at and called my buddy down at Jeep.
o Moreover, you never had the common curtsey to tell me whether it fixed your problem or it was something else. You see this is a learning experience for us too. You soaked up a lot of folks time. I often see 3, 4 or more folks offering up solutions to your problem. You owe us an answer to what worked and what didn’t. You might also say thanks to everyone who threw out some kind of solution. You don’t have to send each one a e mail, just say, “hey folks, got it fixed, it was a dead cat caught up in the fan blade, thanks all”

3. Trail rides:
o I’m new here and I know that “let’s meet at the Mexican hat cactus by the barbwire fence over in FJ means something to lots of you, but not me. I signed up for a trail ride a while back and until I mapped it out, I didn’t know it was 90 miles NE of Tucson. Nowhere in the description was Tucson ever mentioned. Matter of fact it said “lets meet at the service station where we always do”. Not good enough! Put yourself in the shoes of someone what doesn’t know where “we always meet” is.

o Time: “Meet at the Slawson road cut off in Florence Junction at 6am”. Whooa, This ole cowboy spent over half his life drinking his 3rd cup of coffee and smoking his 4th Camel while waiting for the sun to come up over Fort WeGotcha. I am used to breakfast at 0700 hrs after a 15-mile full pack cross-country march that left at 0-Dark-Thirty that morning. I said when I retired from the Army I would give up the habit(s). Bear in mind, that for me to meet you at Wickenburg, Florence Junction, etc, I have to drive at least an hour. Think about the other guy, OK?

o If you need to make an early run fine, I understand, kids, ballgames, yard work you promised the wife and its gonna be 120 degrees hot. That’s all ok and I understand.

o AAR's [after action reports]. Ok great you did the trail run as you posted. Just wonder if you could give me some more info besides " Sunday we did the xxx trail'. Maybe how many folks showed up, trail condition anything fun or exciting that happened. No, you don't have to write a page or give us a description of the number of threads in a bolt hole that were stripped, but a few words about the run would be in order.

o Posting: Not sure it does me, you or anyone any good for you to post a trail ride at 9:45pm the night before we are to leave out at 8am the next morning. I am sitting here looking at one right now that I would have gone on except its too late. Give us all a break and provide at least 24 hours notice...Thanks

4. I enjoy helping you out, but don't ask me to run google searches for you, look up websites or spend my evening doing searches that you can do. If I tell you, Stu Olsen has something on it or I saw a thread on the Jeeps Unlimited forum about it, you trot off and look it up. Ohh and the lame excuse that "search is down" doesn't float for me. I have never found it to be down, even if it is google will pull it up. You have a browser and access to all the search engines I do.

To help you get started. Go to google (www.google.com), but its most likely already in your browser. When you get there, type in what your looking for, hit enter or the return key, give it about a second and you will have several million websites and sublevels that have the info you want. If you can't pull this off, get rid of your Jeep and move on to another hobby.

Only mods can do it.

The Sticky is done.

One item though Don for a summer run during the day I would expect very early times for obvious reasons. You will also see a lot of night runs anything to avoid the heat.

Good post, Don. I don't know how many times I've had to email the trip poster asking where "the usual meeting spot" is :D

The few runs I've posted have always included specific directions and even links to maps (you can use html tags in the trip posts). Makes it so much easier for folks who've never run certain trails/areas. I've yet to hit any Table Mesa area or West side trails, and I'm sure when I do, I'll be sending email asking for detailed directions

Great points. The trail ride portion especially applies to me. I'm new here too, and it makes it worse that I have only lived in AZ for a year and a half. So I don't know the state as well as most of you probably do. But I'm a fairly quick study so I'll try to catch up. :D

Thank you for speaking up for the new guys. I just recently purchased a Jeep (less than two weeks ago) and I'm very eager and anxious to add mods, go on trail runs, meet other Jeepers, etc. I can't speak for other people, but to me, credibility is something I like to have in the eyes of my peers. Having to ask "Where the usual spot is" or even asking for help/assistance can sometimes be intimidating for fear of sounding dumb or singling myself out as the "new guy". The points you made are very relevant to a "new guy" like myself and I look forward to becoming a well-seasoned Jeeper like some of you.

Looking forward to seeing you out on the trails!
