Wow!! what great service....they had the part and when I told the woman I
was in Mesa, she said she could send it to me...I said great and started
pulling out my Visa to pay for it....she said she'd just stick the bill in
the package and I could mail the check when I got the parts....when have you
EVER heard of a company trusting someone like that???....Statewide 4WD has a
new loyal customer....thanx again Mike for hooking me up....

I do have another question though....on a D20 T/C is 4L all the way to
floor???....the reason I ask is that I always thought it was, but I looking
for a replacement knob for the shifter and the one in the picture showed 4H,
2H, N, 4L....I called Four Wheeler Supply and Off-Road Unlimited and they
weren't 100% sure....again, thanx in advance....

TJ --

I own two Jeeps with D20 transfer cases. The one in my CJ came off
of a '79 CJ7 and from front to rear the shifter positions are 4H->2H-
>N->2L->4L (My guess is the 2L is only available after the shift
poppet is removed between the two shift rails.

On my '78 SJ the D20 has different linkage where 2H is completely
forward, N is one position back, 4H is another position back, and 4L
is over (right) and up.

Hope it helps ...

Regarding the clutch upgrade. I had questions about that myself. I directed
them to Steve, who manages the shop at 4 wheelers supply. His response to me
was to stay with a stock clutch; says he has seen them smoke, and then given
30 minutes they would work fine, whereas he said most of the aftermarket
clutches if smoked would leave you stranded.
Just my two cents.

Actually, I have done a fair amount of business with a small 4x4 shop in OK,
ran by owner Bob Supplee. Several orders ago, wires got crossed and Bob
sent me an order. He thought I would be sending him a check. I thought he
had billed it to my credit card, which he had always done before and had the
info available. There was no "you owe me bill" with the parts.

About 6 weeks go by and I call up Bob to order some more parts. After
confirming they would be in the mail later that day, he asked me when I
might be sending him the check for the last order. We cleared that up with
two postings to my credit card for that day.

The guy is a real honest fellow. He believes in customer service. No, he
doesn't have a web site or a catalog (cheaper prices that way). Besides
that, he ships for free and his prices are almost always the lowest ones you
can find. You can get him at 405-799-8977. Don't call him right now since
he is on a well deserved vacation and won't be back for about another 7 days
or so. If you call him, tell him Stu from Phoenix says HI.

Subject: RE: TJ Lift

Don't know what cheap is to you so I'll pass along a couple of options.

The cheapest lift is probably a Tera Budget Boost or the equivalent from Rubicon Express. They both make a 2" spring spacer lift. The spacers slip up on top of your coil springs and raise your chassis a couple of inches. Add some longer shocks and you are pretty much ready to go. You will also want some method by which to disconnect your front sway bar while off-roading, so you have some good flex up front.

Up from the spacer lift comes a modest 2" suspension lift. These will give you taller springs (no spacers needed). Longer shocks are needed for these as well. These usually come with a rear trac-bar relocation bracket, to help keep your rear axle properly centered under your vehicle. Several companies, including the ones previously mentioned, make lifts in this range.

Either of the above type of lifts may induce some rear driveshaft vibrations on your vehicle. If so, you can simply lower your t-case skid about 1/2" to 1" to reduce/eliminate the vibrations. There are other methods available to do this but this is by far the cheapest.

Next come the 3" and up lifts. These lifts usually require more parts to be replaced so that everything works well together. Lower control arms, slip yoke eliminators and CV drive shaft kits, etc.

Hope this helps some.

Hey All,

I'd like to get out of the city a bit this Saturday, but don't have
any solid plans on where to go. I have a couple of thoughts:

1. South West of Wickenburg is a trail that runs to the top of the
Harquahala Mountains. Looks to be an interesting 3.5(+) or 4.0(-)
trail. This is a loop trail so vehicles can be trailered to the trail
head.

2. I know Crown King has been done to death, but I'd thought about
getting up early and getting on top of the mountain before lunch and
then do some exploring. There is a trail that runs from Battleship
Butte across Johnson Flat to Palace Station I'd like to check out.
This trail will come out somewhere near Prescott. Rating around 3.0
- 3.5.

3. Do some exploring up in the Prescott Nat Forest, maybe near
Potato Patch. 3.0 - 3.5(+?)

4. Do some playing at the old P4W Ranch area until about noon and
then head over to Lake Pleasant to cool off. The ranch has something
for everyone..

5. Run Turkey Creek, possibly there will be running water which will
definitely make it more interesting. Solid 3.5 trail when dry.

6. I've never been on FR42... Which also may have been done to
death, but having an option of stopping somewhere there is water is a
good thing this time of the year. I believe this is rated around a
3.5.

7. I've volunteered to lead either Powerline Trail (3.5+) or Jack
Handle (3.5) for the Jamboree, but have yet to actually run this
trail. I need to run these sometime between now and then so at least
I know where they are.

I'd prefer to do something in the mountains where it will be cooler.
If anyone has an interest in running one of these this weekend, let
me know and I'll throw something together.

Sounds Like Ann, her and Earl are good people. I've done business with them
since High School. Earl use to be big into Jeeps, mostly War models, His
hobby kinda took a detour into really odd stuff, like Amphibious craft and
such. Hard to believe, but he drove the entire North American continent in a
Stock War II model Jeep..... all the way into Alaska! (These Jeeps had a 1"
pad for a seat, which sat on top of the gas tank..)
I still stop by and talk to Ann from time to time. I think they are
looking to retire, at least that was the impression I got last time I was
in. You ought to stop in and see them sometime, they have got allot of
restoration items that are hard to find.
Speaking of hard to find, Good people sure are hard to find these days....

With the help of Keith Auble, Mike Anderson, (AZVJC) and Rob (Vermin) I
pulled an all niter last night on the Jeep and got it running again. Just so
happens, I was sent to Yuma today for work, My Jeep, sensing this, followed
me on the trailer all the way there, and demanded I drive it around the
dunes. Not wanting to upset the Jeep, I had to oblige..... Nothing quite
like the full tilt boogie!!

Going slow is ok and all, but something about fresh dune and the smell of
Jet fuel....

I'm working this weekend, and I got a few paybacks to take care of, but I
should be up for a run shortly.

For those interested, looks like we are planning on getting up fairly early. Lake Pleasant to Crown King; we should be in Crown King well before noon, then well do some exploring on the Prescott side of the mountains; the trail Im wanting to find goes from Battleship Butte to Palace Station.

Here is the map.

You'll see Battleship Butte in the lower left. Follow the trail that runs up the middle of the map to Johnson Flat then over to Crooks Canyon. The trail then runs up Crooks Canyon to Palace Station. There is also another trail that runs to the right, but comes out in the same area. Both run up Crooks Canyon until it hits the main Forest Road; this intersection is Palace Station.

To those who may have read my posting to Rags last week about the

It was found that I had installed the lift in the front wrong. I have done
this many times before and didn't think it possible. But it is the little
things that get overlooked. It was my error and early post to Rags that made
this announcement. It was not meant to spur any bad feeling or in NO WAY

>VOLUNTARY Repair and Upgrade Draws Comment
>
>At a recent meeting of the Southwest Virginia Car Council, members
>discussed
>the importance of the SEMA Action Network (SAN). Everyone is thankful to
>SEMA for its timely and informative legislative updates. There is no doubt
>SEMA is a great ally to the hobby. However, it did not go unnoticed that
>the
>August edition of Driving Force contained a letter from Mr. Bill Buck of
>Arizona, which applauds upgrade or retrofit of emission systems as an
>alternative to scrappage.
>
>We believe that there should always be fallback positions in the event
>scrappage legislation cannot be defeated entirely. Trade-offs are often
>necessary to negotiation, but retrofit and upgrade should be used only as a
>last resort. Repair should be the trade-off alternative to scrappage.
>Retrofit and upgrade will likely lead to the governmental incrementalism to
>which we have grown accustomed. Government will always want us to do more.
>States rights are falling daily only to be replaced by overriding federal
>laws. We may soon be forced to fight national scrappage legislation. Let's
>not give away the store without a fight.
>
>Mr. Buck suggests, " We truly hope other states can put together a similar
>program....and keep our pride and joys on the roadways." Our group says
>thanks but NO thanks. Rather than giving in bit-by-bit to ill-informed
>legislators and special interest groups, we should start educating them and
>stand against scrappage and the trading of pollution credits, period!
>Scrappage bills can be fought if we all work together. If we must trade-off
>something, let's offer repair-not retrofit-because the latter leaves us
>little room to maneuver in the future.
>Tom Cox, President,
>Southwest Virginia Car Council
>
>
>I absolutely love what SEMA does for the hobby. But you've got to be more
>careful on this repair/upgrade/retrofit topic. We know the EPA is going to
>make it necessary for states to clean their air, and we know that this
>means
>states are, more and more, going to look at scrappage programs. This is the
>unfortunate reality. But when you talk about any "upgrade" program it
>scares
>the daylights out of auto restorers! No hobbyist with a perfectly restored
>car, like my 1960 Chevy, wants to hear about putting an "upgrade" on their
>car!
>
>You guys need to be clearer: Emphasize the fact that repair/upgrade
>programs
>are necessary only when it becomes obvious that the only other alternative
>is crushing cars. Emphasize that repair/upgrade programs are VOLUNTARY and
>that classic car owners will not be forced to upgrade their cars. Emphasize
>that 25-year emissions exemptions, like we have in California and like the
>one in Virginia, are a perfect way of nullifying this whole argument.
>It only takes a couple extra sentences in your articles to tell the whole
>story and to avoid confusion. This is my unsolicited advice.

>Supreme Court To Review EPA's Clean Air Standards
>
>This fall, the U.S. Supreme Court will review the U.S. Environmental
>Protection Agency's (EPA) tightened clean air standards to determine if the
>agency had justification for developing the regulations which establish
>tough new particulate matter and ozone limits. The Court will also consider
>whether EPA should have considered costs to the industry when they issued
>the regulations. EPA has historically not been required to consider such
>costs. Last year, a lower court found EPA had not demonstrated sound
>justification for the regulations. The EPA appealed this decision.
>Tightened air quality standards will naturally lead to EPA to increase the
>air quality targets required of individual states and localities. For the
>automobile hobbyist, this will inevitably mean more enhanced emissions
>testing programs, like the I/M 240 test, and an increased emphasis on
>questionable vehicle scrappage programs.
>SEMA Executive VP Chris Kersting commented, "The EPA practice of issuing
>pollution standards that lack scientific backing has gone unchecked for too
>long. We look forward to the Supreme Court's decision, hoping it will
>establish an important precedent to limiting the agency's power under the
>Clean Air Act, as well as establishing an important standard or

>
>Feds Propose "Rollover" Rating System
>The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently
>released
>a proposed rollover rating system for passenger cars, light trucks and
>SUVs.
>The rating system will be determined by dividing one-half of a vehicle's
>track width by the height of the center of gravity. NHTSA will convert the
>resulting number, called the "static stability factor," into a 5-star
>rollover rating scale-more stars will supposedly mean greater tendency to
>roll. Given this single measurement, naturally, taller and narrower
>vehicles
>will have fewer stars than shorter and wider vehicles.
>Consumers, SEMA and the automakers have serious concerns about the
>proposal.
>Brian Caudill, SEMA director of outreach and public affairs, noted, "This
>rating system is ill-advised and very likely deceptive. Consumers may
>expect a low rating to mean lower rollover incidents. However, NHTSA data
>shows that other factors like driver behavior, road conditions and
>inclement
>weather are overwhelmingly more to blame for real-world rollovers." The
>rating system also fails to take into account specialized vehicle stability
>features like enhanced suspension systems and stability control systems now
>available on many automobiles. NHTSA currently has two other star-rating
>systems for frontal and side-impact crash tests. NHTSA wants the rollover
>ratings to go into effect for model year 2001 cars and trucks.

Subject: ToyBox Off-Road!

To all the members,
For those of you looking for a reliable and honorable Vendor, I encourage
you to talk to Jay at ToyBox Off-Road. He is very honest and his word is
solid. He will sell you only the best and will not direct you in a false
direction. You will find that his prices are hard to beat. I found that I
could find no one with a better price than ToyBox. But even if his price was
a little higher, I would still go with him because of his standards. Those
of you who have been burned by other Vendors will appreciate this true
value. My high recommendation.....
TOYBOX OFF-ROAD!!!!!!!!!

thanks,
Casper

Subject: Challenger Cat Back Install Completed ... Thoughts ...

I am very happy with the cat back I installed this evening from Challenger.
Challenger is Off-road Unlimited's brand. It installed very quickly and
easily. About 35 minutes. I didn't want my opinion of whether or not I
gained power to be tainted by the sound so drove it before cutting off my
stock exhaust with ear protection (couldn't hear a thing) and took mental
note of acceleration and feel. After completing the install I threw on the
ear protection again and started it up, didn't feel any different, backed
out of the garage and took off down the street .. DEFINITE DIFFERENCE .. I
was very impressed at the noticeable power increase. I hope that it does
something for my MPG as well. It's got a deep throaty sound to it. Overall
impression .. excellent product at an excellent price. A+

Subject: Undoing a transfer case drop

Thanks to everyone who gave me advice on the SYE kit. I'm going to go ahead and tackle it myself. I have a new question though, the original owner dropped the t-case by putting spacers between the transfercase skid plate. Is there anything else people normally do when they drop these? Basically I'm just wondering what i have to do to get it back to the stock height. Thanks in advance,
Jeff

One thing to check is that, with a T-Case drop, it's recommended that the t-case shift linkage be relocated. It's possible that the original installer also installed a linkage relocation plate. If so, It'll be attached to the stock linkage bracket, on the inside of the tub tunnel. However, since this relocation is not always done, you may not have to worry about undoing it...but it's something to look for.

On the SYE - if cost is an issue, you could go with the RE SYE kit. It uses the stock output shaft, but requires that the shaft be cut, drilled and tapped. I had this set up for a while and it worked fine.

A better set up, though, would be to swap out the stock shaft w/ a heavy duty short shaft. There are a number of them available, but since I have no direct experience with them, perhaps there are others that can advise specifically on them.
