Subject: RE: Jamboree Registration

For those of us who have not attended the jamboree, is there some place to
get some info on it? I have already been to the ASA4WDC web site and can
not find any info that explains what the jamboree consists of, other than
the list of volunteer jobs that need filling.

For instance, I saw a tech inspection item on the list, which no doubt is
needed before doing a trail. Where is one to find all of this tribal
knowledge as to what the inspection consists of, etc.? It appears there is
camping available, etc. Where and how much?

I could not even find a registration price on the ASA4WDC web site....I hope
I simply over looked it.

Comments on the web site such as "being held in the same place as last year"
doesn't help those who weren't there last year.

If anyone knows where I can get some helpful information, I would appreciate
you passing it along. :-)

Thanks......Stu

I just got an e-mail from Sandee McCullen. The registration forms will be
mailed out Tuesday and Wednesday to those that attended last years Jamboree.
Others can pick up the forms at most Four Wheel Drive shops or go to
www.asa4wdc.org and register there. They are still looking for volunteers to
lead runs and help with other things too. Those that help will save $25
dollars off your registration and get a free T-shirt.

Linda,
What is puzzling about your problem is that the symptoms do not show up when
in 2WD. I realize that once in 4WD, additional forces act on the front end
and the steering becomes "heavy" so to speak. Is it that the pump is just
marginally working....just providing enough force to barely assist your
turning in 2WD?

As to which replacement item to go with, the old theory about replacement
parts being a good opportunity to upgrade to a better grade of component is
a good one. I don't know the cost difference between the two.

While on the Rubicon I discovered that the ZJ would easily turn right,
but had a hard time turing left (no political jokes please!) while the
transfer case was engaged. The problem doesn't occur in 2WD, but I do
feel a little 'pulsing' through the steering wheel. The recent trip to
Martinez confirmed that fact that there is definitely something wrong
with the steering box.

The question is: What would be more practical? Installing another OEM
steering box or going with an AGR type steering box instead? The ZJ sees
a lot of trail abuse, but is also my daily driver. Any other ideas?

Hi Stu, all that info is generally in the mailer, and they usually post
it on the web site too. Everything appears to have been pushed back a
bit this year due to the permitting issues. I'll try to answer some of
your questions here.

The mailer, which should be available in 4WD shops, or by request.

They check for basic things- roll bar or hardtop, battery tie down, seat
belts, tow hooks. For the higher rated runs they generally require 1/2
lockers + >=33" tires, they will check.

The camping areas are on AZ state trust land, IIRC, and you can camp
there free with your registration.

This was a bit up in the air due to BLM fees, but the last I heard was
$70. Don't hold me to that, I work right next to desert rat, I'll see
if I can pick up a mailer at lunch.

http://www.cnn.com/2000/NATURE/09/04/eliminating.roads.ap/

Forest Service makes push to eliminate roads as logging numbers drop

Former FS employees claim that roads are being closed by edict from DC,
Dombeck claims that all closures are handled by local staff. Get this:
at DC direction. Hmmmm.... Sounds like he agreeswith the former FS
employee, in a roundabout way.

On the (sort of) plus side, in the last 10 years, only 25,000 of 386,000
miles of existing reads have been closed. They are on pace to close
another 3,000 this year. It sounds like they are concentrating on the
Pacific Northwest, which does have a (relatively) high density of
logging roads. It still bothers me that the local offices don't seem to
get a lot of say in how their land is managed.

As Sandee McCullen said: "They don't know in DC what is happening on the
rocks in Arizona."

I would perfer doing a lot of the work by pulling the axles and

I could deliver the axles or the entire vehicle to someone else's

I have installed a gear before in a 12 bolt, but I would like the

If your interested email or call and give me a price$.

Steel rims...one popular setup is AR767 (American Racing). I think these
can be found at Discount Tire if memory serves me correctly. Fairly
inexpensive and pretty sturdy from what I have heard.

Most folks are running 15" x 8" rims. Backspacing around 4"~4.5" is fairly
common for a TJ. I am running just a bit less on mine, not quite 3.5".
