View Full Version : Simple Dana 30 question

I have a Dana 30 front axle and the vent hose fell off completely yesterday. So I checked it out and it looked like a 1/8"NPT pipe fitting would work to thread into the diff housing.
Nope. The 1/8" pipe threads are just a hair too big to thread into the hole. I don't want to tap the hole because I would get shavings into the gear oil.
So... does anyone know what the proper size fitting is? Or what the factory used?
Thanks for any advice you can give.

I guess if all else fails I'll just have to tap the hole and then replace the gear oil.
The threads are kind of odd.. I'd say drain it, put some greese on the tap and go at it.. you could also place a magnet on the inside of the housing to catch any shavings..

I had the same prob w/ my D30. Even purchased a new vent fitting from 4-Wheelers.
The fitting is a press-fit from the factory. No threads! Hard as hell to press a new one in, IMO.
Tap to 1/8 NPT and get a fitting at Ace. Run the vent line up high somewhere on your rig, to help prevent sucking water into the diff.

OK, so would the local 4x shop stock the gasket for the diff cover?

you don't need a gasket.....just put some good gasket sealer on both surfaces....

Yeah, I went by Desert Rat Truck Center this morning and they said the same thing.
Now, since I'll have the cover off anyway, I need to decide which diff guard I should buy.

You ought to think about getting one of these.... Its called a Buttface
Its made by a small texas shop called Baertrax. www.baertrax.com.
It has worked well for me... protects the tie rod and also acts kinda like a slider that will allow the diff to push its way up and over rocks.

Finally had some time to work on the Jeep today. Sure enough, there was water in the front diff so the oil was all milky. Got it all cleaned out and got the breather hole tapped for the 1/8" pipe fitting. Just have to put the cover back on now and add fresh gear oil.

Cool... I was told when I bought this Jeep that it had an open front diff. Well, when I looked in there today, whoa, no spider gears. It looks like a Lock Right locker to me. What do you think, am I right?

Well considering that pic you have posted pops up a box from DuneBuggy Members Area asking for a username and password, I'm not sure if many will be able to help you. ;)

I don't know what a LockRight looks like, but I think that it looks very similar to the PowerTrax No-Slip I have in my diff.
I don't know what the visual differences are between the two though.

My understanding is the Lock Right and Powertrax are both built by Richmond Gear and look very similar.

Almost positive it's a Powertrax. The Lock-Right full locker is round and not square for the center section.

So if it is a Powertrax, how does that differ from the Lock Right? I guess my biggest question is do I need to run a special gear oil? I know some limited slips require special oil... does this one?
Thanks for all your help everyone.

The picture also looks a lot like this one: http://www.lockright.com
No special gear oil is necessary, just run the same lube you would normally. I'm using 80-90 with out any problems.

I think the lockright is round, and doesn't have the flat spot on it. Atleast that is what I remember them looking like from 3-4 years ago. They have since been purchased by PowerTrax, so they could have slightly changed the design...at any rate, I would guess a Lockright.
No special oil or additive needed.

Thanks everyone. It's good to know I have a four wheel drive Jeep instead of a three wheel drive. ;) :D

I really like the "ButtFace". Not a lot of selection though. None that work for me.

If you give Russ Baer a call he might be able to make one for your application... You have got a TJ and a Waggy? I know he makes product for Dana 30 and 44.
