Tom,

Thanks for suggesting the 4x4 trip out the Martinez Canyon. I needed a
4x4 fix! Plus I was wasn't sure about a couple of fix-its on the ZJ, but
the trip confirmed a problem with the steering box and the fact that I
have a bent shock. Kind of wished I had done that last 'little' obstacle
on Mineral Mtn Rd, but it'll be around for a long time.

Hope to see you and Lisa on the trail again soon!

Went to Cherry creek road this weekend. At the first creek crossing after the real trail starts the road is closed do to a serious washout but with a Jeep you can creativly get by it. The rest of the trail is passible in 2 wheel drive. PB Cabin is in good shape with a ton of supplies stocked, though I leaned up against a shelf and stood there for 5 minutes and when I turned around and looked on the shelf there was a big rattler coiled there just looking and sticking his tongue out at me, inches from my belly....Anyways, to go with the big debate on mechanical verse electric fan, mine being an electric and mounted in the center of my radiator with the pull through the vane ties, during the harsh offroading the fan was apparently jumping up and down and managed to work itself down the radiator, the ties ripping through the vanes and putting a hole in my core....Barely made it to Young and picked up a package of radiator sealent. Another item to add to the safety kit. It works really well. I'll be picking up a new radiator this week and finding a new way to mount my fan.

Cheery Creek is one of my favorite areas. I have done a bit of bear hunting in there. My Grandmother worked on the ranch at the north end 70+ years ago. If anyone wants to do a trip in there I would be glad to guide or tag along. Some very beautiful country. On top I know there are some gnarly mine roads.

Cherry Creek is a large valley/canyon that runs east of the Sierra Anchas, generally from the Salt River to Young. PB Cabin is a line shack that's still in use and in very good condition. It's about 2/3rds the way to Young.

Well I finally finished my lift. It did take a few months to do it right,
but rather than buy something cheaper at the earlier stages, I held out for
what I really wanted and WOW!!
It is much better than I thought it would be. I had a Rancho 3" lift before
I changed it out for the combination 7" lift from both RE and Rusty's Off
Road. The ride is much more pleasant, and it handles very well. I have had
the rig up to 75 mph for a small trip of 40 miles, and there is absolutely
NO death wobble or anything else to worry about so far..........knock on
wood!!!
Now all I have left is the locker; Hurry home Jay so I can order my
Lock-Rite...............
I will take some pictures of my new lift and post them this week. Oh and by
the way, does anyone know or remember the e-mail that was sent a few days
ago about a set of Super Swampers, half worn down but still good tires? I am
very interested in them if they are the right size.

Thanks,
Casper

Subject: [az_vjc] TR -- Crown King

Well, what can I say? There wasn't much of a turnout for today's run to
Crown King........exactly 2 vehicles showed up: Mike P and Me. Is
everybody tired of Crown King?

The rains have changed the trail a bit since the last time I was there.
Some would say it's better, some would say it's worse. It all kinda depends
on how well set up your rig is :-). I'm happy to say that I was able to
make it up all of the optional hills/obstacles in the first half of the
trail..........including the one with the hornet's nest at the top (Chris
M's favorite).

Why only the first half? 'Cuz Mike's Z71 blew the front axle actuating
solenoid just before the lunch/camping spot halfway up. We made it to the
nice clearing with the mini-hillclimbs that are cut into the side of the
trail (the spot with the famous tree that sparked all the debate a while
back when somebody posted pics of vehicles driving up the tree) when Mike
noticed that he just wasn't moving along very well. The transfer case was
still working, but the front axle wouldn't engage. At first we thought that
the wires had just been pulled out of the solenoid (they were hanging loose
under the truck), but after we re-wired it (and secured the wires with duct
tape in true McGyver fashion) the "4x4" fuse would blow every time the
transfer case was engaged. Thinking that we had wired it backwards, we
disassembled our trail repair and reversed the wires.........same result.

Neither of us has ever been inside a GM independant front suspension
electrically controlled front axle assembly, so we decided to turn around
and work our way back to the trailhead with Mike running in 2wd. In order
to "hotwire" the front axle and make it engage, we would first have to pull
it apart and find out HOW it engaged.........and we weren't exactly in a
very good spot to do that. We were fortunate enough to have a really nice
hill handy so that Mike could park the truck sideways on the hill so that
all of the gear oil in the axle didn't run out when we pulled the
solenoid.........the greenies would be proud - we didn't spill a drop.

Mike made it back to the trailhead in 2wd without ever needing to be
strapped, which I feel is a great testimony to his driving skill. I fully
expected to have to drag him most of the way, but he worked it for
everything it had and managed it without tearing up the truck or the trail.

Which brings me to a part of the day that really disgusts me.........someone
almost started a forest fire while we were there. When we arrived at the
mid-way clearing, there were two logs about 18 inches in diameter BURNING on
the shelf overlooking the clearing. Not only did someone go off and leave
their campfire burning, but people had been driving by the damn things all
day long and NOBODY STOPPED TO PUT IT OUT. We rolled them over, broke them
up, and poured water over them until they were out.......then hung around
for another half hour to make sure that they stayed out. These logs weren't
just smoldering..........there were actual flames and a good quantity of
smoke.

This really pisses me off. We fight so hard to keep the forests open, and
some yahoo tries to burn them down........and nobody else cares. Really
makes me lean more and more towards the off-road license idea. We need
idiot management along with forest management.

Maybe the broken axle was a sign that we had done our job (putting the fire
out) and it was time for us to go. Or maybe the forest spirits were looking
kindly upon us and that's why Mike was able to make it back out in 2wd
without any problems. :-)

All in all it was a good trip. It was a beautiful day, we had a good time,
and Mike's truck can be fixed. No complaints..........except about the
yahoo's.

be careful out there

Subject: steering box blues?

While on the Rubicon I discovered that the ZJ would easily turn right,
but had a hard time turing left (no political jokes please!) while the
transfer case was engaged. The problem doesn't occur in 2WD, but I do
feel a little 'pulsing' through the steering wheel. The recent trip to
Martinez confirmed that fact that there is definitely something wrong
with the steering box.

The question is: What would be more practical? Installing another OEM
steering box or going with an AGR type steering box instead? The ZJ sees
a lot of trail abuse, but is also my daily driver. Any other ideas?
