I also have the same situation. My CJ's 'on road' days came to an end so I
though I'd buy a TJ for dual purpose (Light Trails and daily driver).
Unfortunately, it just doesnt work that way.
I must sell the TJ and buy a tow vehicle (F250) for the CJ7. If anyone is
looking for a loaded 2000 TJ let me know.
I'd also like to hear some input on trailers.

I'm also looking for a good trailer. I bought a tow vehicle about a year
ago, and I have been flat-towing the jeep because I live in an apartment and
don't have anywhere to park a trailer. But I'll be moving next month, so
I'm looking to buy a trailer now.

With this many folks looking for trailers, you all should get together and talk
to one of the trailer manufacturers about a group discount. There are a bunch of
trailer outfits in AJ and east Mesa. Just a thought.

Hi All
I need your excellent help. I have a 77 CJ5 with 304, T18A,Dana 20. 4
inch lift, 32 BFG Muds. The drive shafts have all new joints. The
problem is when I coast there is a growl from the drive line that gets
progressively worse with higher speed. If I put power to it or let off
the peddle completely it goes away. Only happens when I coast down hill
or briefly when I let off in town. It also has new clutch and through
out bearing. Thanks in advance.

What about building your own trailer. I built my trailer and could easily
build one to tow a Jeep. You want it to be a tandem axle. I will be
helping a friend build a trailer for his willy's to tow behind his dodge
dakota. I have lots of ideas about trailers. Let me know if you are
interested. Whats your tow vehicle?

is
getting that way, but I am trying to slow down the transition from daily

Is there a noticeable vibration that accompanies the growl from the
driveline? After I lifted my CJ7 I had driveline vibration that was only
really noticeable when coasting (neither accelerating nor decelerating). I
put in a CV joint and the problem went away, but my problem was caused by
the lift. The driveline itself may not be balance properly as well.

Bob,
Your symptoms sound like those I had in my XJ except the growling noise was
there when under power. When I let off the gas, the noise went away.
My problem was a bad pinion bearing in the rear diff. It was making an
abnormal wear pattern on the R&P.
Had the rear diff overhauled and it is quiet as a mouse. Mine had about
110K on it.

Linda,
I looked at quite a few tow vehicles, and finally decided on a 2000 Lexus
LX470. It tows 6500lbs and seats 8 (just enough for my family). I call it
the Family Truckster <grin>. I must be doing mid-life crisis backwards;
Sold my Lexus SC400 Sport Coupe and bought a family truckster... <sigh>.
Good luck slowing down the trailer queen transition on your ZJ... I'm

Good Idea Bob... I live in Mesa, and there are quite a few trailer
manufacturers out here. If anyone is seriously interested in trying to get
a group discount; I'd be glad to do some pricing. Those of you who will be
ready in the next couple of months to purchase a trailer, let me know and
I'll see what kind of group pricing I can get.

I'll have the PowerWagon in shape in about a year. The ZJ is going to have to

Jeepers --
A friend of mine bought a BigTex car hauler trailer about 6 months
ago here in town. He ended up getting the widest one (80" pad, 16'
long) that is actually none too small for most built rigs. He looked
at a ton of trailers and actually tried out a few of them. His
impressions were that anything shorter than 16' was excessively
squirrely because of the weight distribution (towed behind his
extracab 97 Dodge 1/2ton). He also said the BigTex carhaulers are
far better quality than anything else he looked at. His cost was
around $1700 complete with tags and axle straps.
As far as a group discount, I have been ready to purchase a trailer
for the last couple of months and have just been looking for the
right time. Myself, I need a tandem axle carhauler with an 80" pad
since sidewall to sidewall on my CJ is just shy of 78". I will be
towing it with my 78 Chero.
If anyone else is seriously interested in group trailer shopping,
count me in and keep me in the loop.

I'd be interested in a group buy. The Big Tex 16' sounds about right. I wonder if we could shave a couple hundred dollars off that price of $1700.

We went to Cove 1 first and then pro ceded to climb that steep hill. We all
made it so we proceeded to wander around looking for hills. It has rained
hard there so the trails that used to be in the washes are obliterated. We
got "sidetracked in a wash that ended up taking us up a steep little hill
and connecting up to FR13. We took FR13 to Cottomwood Camp where we took a
break. A couple of folks split off to go home and do chores and the rest of
us went back down to Cove 5 where we found grill deep water and a fun hill.
We all went up the hill and out the back way from Cove 5. We went out to
the play hill area and Kris fed his 3 girls while others played on the
hills. We then headed back out climbing every tough hill we could find.
All in all we had fun. The rains have changed things back there but the
garbage still calls out to be hauled away. I will lead another cleanup
there when it cools off.
Thanks to all who came it was a good way to spend a Saturday.

Land Use: Concentrating Our Efforts; Avoiding Burnout
(Managing Your Monkeys)
By Del Albright
It’s encouraging to see so many recreationists getting involved these days
in the land use/public lands access battles. In fact, now we face a time
when some of us old land use horses are starting to sag under the burden of
doing this so long. We can’t afford to lose any of our activists to
burnout, so I’ve come up with a cure to keep our fighters fighting.
I’ve found that a key to avoiding burnout and staying effective is to narrow
your focus; concentrate your efforts. I like to think of our land use
battles as a quail hunt. You ever hunted quail? Well, a typical hunt
consists of hours of walking, wearing yourself out, then all of a sudden
blazing away at a flurry of birds, usually missing most of them. The only
one who gets any enjoyment out of this is your dog – who can’t stop
dog-laughing at your new-found state of frustration.
The land use battles have reached such a flurry that many of us don’t know
where to start. So we take the shotgun approach. We try to get in all the
games. Of course, we want to help out all our partners in other states;
other regions; other clubs. So we assist with letters, phone calls, emails,
etc. Pretty soon we have an extensive little filing system that may cover
many subjects and many letters and many meetings. Then all of a sudden, we
realize we’re up to our ears!
And hey, what about that lawn that needs mowing? And that car (4wheeler?)
that needs detailing; the significant other that is tired of you being at
the computer half the night; and the trails that need riding? Next thing
you know, burnout sets in. There are just too many battles to fight and
soon you begin to drop off in effectiveness.
A friend of mine told me once that in his mind, this tactic of having too
many battlefronts is JUST WHAT OUR OPPONENTS WANT. Just like in military
maneuvers; if you spread the battle lines thin, pretty soon you’ll find a
way to penetrate and overwhelm the enemy.
Well, STOP! If you’re a land use activist who’s been doing MORE than your
share, it’s time to concentrate your efforts, increase your effectiveness
and avoid burnout. Here’s some ways to do that.
First Step: Re-affirm your commitment to fighting the land use battles. We
all need to keep fighting the good fight. You can’t let burnout take you
out of the battle. Every letter we write; meeting we attend; run we run;
new member we recruit; we make a difference. People we keep in the fight,
no matter what their role, we make a difference in the outcome. So STAY IN
THE FIGHT. Tell yourself you’re going to do your part; just maybe a
different part from here on. That’s ok.
Second Step: Decide what you’re really good at. Are you a letter-writer; a
meeting person; an advisor to others; a volunteer leader who organizes
others; a writer in general; or just someone who wants to give money and
stay in the background?? Find your niche. This may take some soul
searching.
Not all of us like to write letters, but we want to help. Not all of us can
lead a run or meet face to face with some bigwig bureaucrat and feel
comfortable doing it. Not all of us can take the time to attend all these
seemingly endless meetings; but we still are interested in many of the
meeting topics. The answer is to narrow your efforts and focus on those
things you can be good at (your niche).
Third Step: Drop those things you’re not good at. Yes, it’s like the old
management system called “Monkey Management” from the 1980’s. In that
system, everything on your chore list is a “monkey.” Your objective is to
either feed the monkey (keep it happy); get rid of it (if it’s not yours);
or shoot it!
So if your list of things to do, letters to write, meetings to attend, etc.
etc. is way longer than you can handle, (in other words some of those
monkeys just aren’t yours or you’re not keeping them happy), GET RID OF
THEM!!!
Fourth Step: Help others pick up what you need to drop. The sensible thing
to do is to help someone else take over those monkeys for you. Find another
activist to jump in where you left off (or never really got started). Don’t
just leave your partners hanging. If folks are depending on you, find a way
to transition out of something you’re not good at by helping someone else
pick up where you left off. It may take some “cards on the table” talks,
but that’s better than letting something fall off the table.
Fifth Step: Focus your efforts on your niche. Now that you know what
monkeys you want to keep, and have gotten rid of the rest, begin to focus.
Concentrate on getting really good at those things you’re now doing. Make
every effort count. Take classes if appropriate to improve your chosen
niche. Get the paybacks. Make a difference.
We all need to be fighting the land use/public land access battles; but we
all don’t need to fight all the battles. We must find ways to avoid burnout
in our fellow club members and keep everyone doing their part. Of course,
this assumes we’re all already out their joining organized recreation and
recruiting new members every chance we get. That’s always a given. If you
follow these steps, I think you’ll find we can stay in the fight and make
our efforts more effective.

Subject: TR -- Crown King
Well, what can I say? There wasn't much of a turnout for today's run to
Crown King........exactly 2 vehicles showed up: Mike P and Me. Is
everybody tired of Crown King?
The rains have changed the trail a bit since the last time I was there.
Some would say it's better, some would say it's worse. It all kinda depends
on how well set up your rig is :-). I'm happy to say that I was able to
make it up all of the optional hills/obstacles in the first half of the
trail..........including the one with the hornet's nest at the top (Chris
M's favorite).
Why only the first half? 'Cuz Mike's Z71 blew the front axle actuating
solenoid just before the lunch/camping spot halfway up. We made it to the
nice clearing with the mini-hillclimbs that are cut into the side of the
trail (the spot with the famous tree that sparked all the debate a while
back when somebody posted pics of vehicles driving up the tree) when Mike
noticed that he just wasn't moving along very well. The transfer case was
still working, but the front axle wouldn't engage. At first we thought that
the wires had just been pulled out of the solenoid (they were hanging loose
under the truck), but after we re-wired it (and secured the wires with duct
tape in true McGyver fashion) the "4x4" fuse would blow every time the
transfer case was engaged. Thinking that we had wired it backwards, we
disassembled our trail repair and reversed the wires.........same result.
Neither of us has ever been inside a GM independant front suspension
electrically controlled front axle assembly, so we decided to turn around
and work our way back to the trailhead with Mike running in 2wd. In order
to "hotwire" the front axle and make it engage, we would first have to pull
it apart and find out HOW it engaged.........and we weren't exactly in a
very good spot to do that. We were fortunate enough to have a really nice
hill handy so that Mike could park the truck sideways on the hill so that
all of the gear oil in the axle didn't run out when we pulled the
solenoid.........the greenies would be proud - we didn't spill a drop.
Mike made it back to the trailhead in 2wd without ever needing to be
strapped, which I feel is a great testimony to his driving skill. I fully
expected to have to drag him most of the way, but he worked it for
everything it had and managed it without tearing up the truck or the trail.
Which brings me to a part of the day that really disgusts me.........someone
almost started a forest fire while we were there. When we arrived at the
mid-way clearing, there were two logs about 18 inches in diameter BURNING on
the shelf overlooking the clearing. Not only did someone go off and leave
their campfire burning, but people had been driving by the damn things all
day long and NOBODY STOPPED TO PUT IT OUT. We rolled them over, broke them
up, and poured water over them until they were out.......then hung around
for another half hour to make sure that they stayed out. These logs weren't
just smoldering..........there were actual flames and a good quantity of
smoke.
This really pisses me off. We fight so hard to keep the forests open, and
some yahoo tries to burn them down........and nobody else cares. Really
makes me lean more and more towards the off-road license idea. We need
idiot management along with forest management.
Maybe the broken axle was a sign that we had done our job (putting the fire
out) and it was time for us to go. Or maybe the forest spirits were looking
kindly upon us and that's why Mike was able to make it back out in 2wd
without any problems. :-)
All in all it was a good trip. It was a beautiful day, we had a good time,
and Mike's truck can be fixed. No complaints..........except about the
yahoo's.
be careful out there

Sounds like you finally made it to the extreme 'wheeler class! LOL! The ZJ
is
getting that way, but I am trying to slow down the transition from daily
driver
to trailer queen for at least a few more years. At least until Steve and I
move
to Cochise County. It's the emissions rules here in Maricopa County that
keep me
from having too much fun with the Jeep. What did you buy for a tow truck?

I call it
the Family Truckster <grin>. I must be doing mid-life crisis backwards;
Sold my Lexus SC400 Sport Coupe and bought a family truckster... <sigh>.
Good luck slowing down the trailer queen transition on your ZJ... I'm
thinking you are already there. <laugh>

His only regret is that he did not get the breaks on BOTH axles. He is

I will have to modify what ever trailer I get because I will need to drive

one ton rear end on the Dodge those brakes are handy when you need to get it

Thought you all might appreciate this. I start every year with the best

end of the year I feel pretty good. If I end the year without making a
difference somewhere I feel pretty bad.

We try to get in all the
games. Of course, we want to help out all our partners in other states;
other regions; other clubs.
You can’t let burnout take you
out of the battle. Every letter we write; meeting we attend; run we run;
new member we recruit; we make a difference.
In that
system, everything on your chore list is a “monkey.” Your objective is to
either feed the monkey (keep it happy); get rid of it (if it’s not yours);
or shoot it!

No complaints..........except about the
yahoo's.
be careful out there
Len
