It's pretty sad that there are so few outlets for OHV and 4x4 recreation
in the east (east of the Mississippi River, that is). Even with homeboy
Babbitt closing off millions of acres here in the West we are still
fortunate to be able to enjoy public access to public lands without
penalties. I don't know how long it's going to last. I want to be able
to enjoy Arizona's backcountry 40-50 years from now the same way I enjoy
it today.

what???
I've often thought of moving to AZ just to have free

Contrary to popular belief we really don't have 'free roam of the land'
but we do have a lot more places to go. Phoenix is practically
surrounded by BLM, USF, and State Trust Land with legitimate OHV and 4x4
trails. Most are within an hour's drive. So we are lucky in that
respect. Time will come when we'll have to start taking the land
agencies to court to keep these trails open. I doubt that we will be
begging permission from private land owners like you all have to do
since most of Arizona is goverment owned land.

Subject: New YJ need advice on SYE

Hey guys we just picked up 92 YJ for my brother...got a pretty good deal I
thought. 1992 64K 4.0 5 spd, hard doors, new soft top, 4-5" lift, new 33"
thornbirds, in great condition for $8,500!
Anyways the guy who had it before dropped the transfercase and angled it a
bit to get rid of the vibes. However it looks like the transfercase is
leaking a bit out the rear when you drive it. It also looks like the
driveshaft is like an inch too short now. My dad wanted to just get the
driveshaft lengthened but I was thinking my brother would be better off if
he went ahead and installed a SYE now and just did it right the first time.
Mind you he doesn't really have a lot of cash right now...poor kid's in the
navy!
What do you guys think? 4wheelers quoted me $900 installed for the AA SYE
and a new driveshaft. That's more than my brother is willing to spend i'm
sure. Anyone know about Tom Woods SYE kit? I'm thinking about trying to
tackle the install myself to save my brother some money but I'm not always
super confident working on someone else's jeep. I'm sure I'll wind up doing
the install myself on my ZJ when the time comes for it. Anyone ever
installed one? Maybe some a pizza and beer installation "party" at my
place? =) I know there's a pretty good writeup on the Tom Woods kit on
rockcrawler.com.
Anyways all advice and input is appreciated!
Jeff Gully
93 ZJ...now dwarfed by little bro's jeep!

It's not like they came in and closed up the trails...
We never had any to start!!! Everything here is
farmland... Farmers don't want you on the property...
The few places that do allow wheel'n are private...
The Badlands are private... The Indiana Four Wheel
Drive Assocation (which I'm a member) has been working
with the DNR to open some trails in the Green Sullivan
Forest area commonly known as "Redbird"... Hopefully
that will happen... Michigan which is just a few miles
away has plenty of trails and fire roads that are
open... In fact we frequent Silver Lake Sand Dunes...
I will keep you posted on the Redbird situation...

Subject: FYI XJ/ZJ power antenna mast fix

If you own an XJ or ZJ with a power antenna this might come in handy.

Jeep sells a power antenna mast repair kit that supposedly works with
the early 1990s power antennas on XJs and ZJs. Unfortunately it doesn't.
The mast anchor sleeve is just slightly too small. Turn on the stereo
and the antenna goes flying out! I found this out the hard way so now I
have two spare masts. Anyway, I knew that there had to be a fix that
was simple and cheap. I finally figured it out. For my 93 ZJ, it took a
5/16" ID wire washer inside the locknut that holds the mast in place.
Simple as that! So try this before wasting $36 on a repair kit. This
might be all you need.

After seeing the annoying NEXTCARD VISA ad 100 times, I decided to check it
out. 9.9% is a pretty good rate. What a crock of ****! The only way you can
get 9.9% is if you transfer $9000 of what you owe other credit cards. If I
had that much credit card debt, I sure as hell wouldn't be sighing up for
another one. If they are going to push these ads in our face, at least they
should have a little credibility.
OOPS, I'll only talk about Jeep stuff from now on.

Actually I perfer the idea of us all kicking in a buck or two towards
getting the ads removed completely from the group. If you are willing
to contribute $1 to removing the add send me a email and once we get 60
people I'll publish the list and coordinate with Dan on where to send
it. If you are willing to donate more so others don't have to let me
know and I'll keep a tally of when we reach the required amount.

Hello Jay/ToolBox,
I thought I would write you on this address as well due to the fact that
you may be reading this page rather than the ToyBox site. I received my 4.5"
ZJ coils today. It came in exactly when you said they would. It is sure
great getting what you pay for, unlike some of the other vendors I have done
business with. One thing O'Buddy, I believe RE may have messed up on the
number order. I received two (4) sets of 4.5" ZJ coils in one big box. I
hope that someone is not waiting for these, and I got them by mistake.
Please let me know how I can help. I want to order my locker for my rear on
my 87 XJ. It is a Dana 35c, with 3.55 gears. What else do you need to know
in to order ASAP. If you could shoot me a price, I will get the check off in
the mail ASAP. I believe you have my credit card Number...
If you would like to call me, go ahead and call anytime before 10:30 and
then anytime after 12.30.. I really appreciate your help Jay. Not having to
worry about whether I am getting my moneys worth or not is a great feeling.
You truly have GREAT prices and you have EXCELLENT customer service...
I can try to call you tomorrow before 10:30 and if no contact, I will call

Outdoor Enthusiasts:

The statement below was snipped from the Land Use Digest today. It is refreshing to see an eastern Congressman shares the perspective of many weserterners who believe that mechanized and motorized access to ALL public lands is at risk under the current Administration:

by U.S. Congressman Donald A. Manzullo
16th Congressional District Illinois

It is evident that the goal of the Clinton-Gore
Administration is to eliminate motorized vehicle access from our nation's
public lands.
This is apparent given the reasoning behind and process utilized in recent
actions
it has taken.
As many people know, the National Park Service (NPS) has
decided to ban snowmobiles in many of our national parks. As the
snowmobile goes, so likely will go other motorized vehicles. Even horseback
riding is at
risk.
Don't think this will stop at just national parks. Other
public lands will likely be included in the future given the underlying
circumstances.
This development concerns me greatly, as it should
everybody. On July 13, 2000, I held a hearing on this issue in my Small
Business
Subcommittee on Tax, Finance and Exports. The hearing highlighted the
impacts that
this proposed regulation will have on small businesses linked to
snowmobiles and
snowmobiling. Whole communities are in jeopardy if this ban is allowed to
go
through. This is a fact that the Clinton-Gore Administration seemingly
neglected to
consider before proposing the ban.
However, it is not just small businesses in and around
national parks that are at stake. Sports equipment shops and
snowmobile/trailer
dealers, for example, in places that are not necessarily close to a
national park
will feel the impact, too.
National parks are supposed to be for everyone, not just
an elite few who choose not to take advantage of certain modes of
transportation. One witness at my hearing noted that park visitors should
be "able to
access all of the elements that constitute a national park"...including
"clean air,
natural sounds, undisturbed wildlife, and the scent of woods and flowers."
Doesn't it seem
logical that the same reasoning goes for national monuments, national
forests,
and other areas regarded by environmentalists for being important?
What proponents of the ban apparently want is to turn
our parks into something just short of wilderness. This would be a mistake
on
several fronts.
First there is the claim that snowmobiles pollute. Then
there are the complaints about noise. Well, if that is the basis for making
the
determination to ban the use of these machines on the trails inside the
parks, trails
which are plowed over the roads used by sightseers driving vehicles with
combustion
engines, it stands to reason that the use of any privately owned motorized
vehicle will be
banned in the future.
Therefore, the stakes are high for those who drive or
ride motorcycles, cars, RVs or personal water craft (PWC) in and around our
national
parks. These vehicles emit some pollution, there is noise associated with
most, and with the exception of PWCs, they operate on roads, which
environmentalists for
years have complained disturb wildlife. >From some of the mail I receive,
there
are those who appear to argue that the presence of anything involving human
activity would be a disturbance.
To partially address that concern, the U.S. government
has set aside nearly 104 million acres of wilderness--but with the approval
of
Congress.
Proponents claim that they are simply following the law.
They go back almost three decades to a little known executive order signed
by
President Nixon to make their case. (Notice that it is an executive order
and not a
statute that is in question here.) Furthermore, they claim that the
rule-making process has
been open and public. Nothing could be further from the truth. And this
should
concern everyone, proponents and opponents of the proposed ban alike.
What happened, as viewed in public policy terms, is not
the norm. However, the action is yet another example of the Clinton-Gore
Administration legislating from the executive branch without input from the
Congress.
This administration constantly seems to assert that the
ends justify the means. When the proverbial shoe of policy is on the other
foot,
however, environmentalists who support this type of policy making should
beware. They
will not always agree with future administrations.
The actions of the Clinton-Gore Administration, which
apparently believes that the current Congress is an obstacle standing in
the way of
the actions it wants to take, unfortunately set a poor standard for policy
making.
That is why it is imperative to get involved in the public policy process.
Two gentlemen, John Lyon and Ron Hambly, of the Illinois
Association of Snowmobile Clubs--came to my Washington, DC office last
fall to make me aware of the threat to snowmobilers. What they shared with
me
encouraged me to act. I held a hearing. But we need to do more. On June
21st, I
joined several other Members of Congress and Senators at a press conference
to announce the formation of a new coalition: Americans for Responsible
Recreation Access (ARRA). The founding members of ARRA include the
American Horse Council, the American Council of Snowmobile Associations,
the
American Motorcyclist Association, the Motorcycle Industry Council, the
Personal Watercraft Industry Association, and the Speciality Vehicle
Institute of
America.
It is evident that people feel the need to band together
to fight for access to public lands. Therefore, it is incumbent upon
everyone--snowmobilers, horseback riders, motorcyclists, motorists who
drive through national
parks in cars, SUVs, recreational vehicles, or anyone who uses other modes
of
transportation, to become aware, active and involved. Congress needs to
know that people are concerned about losing their access privileges. If we
don't make a stand for access to national parks with regard to snowmobiles,
further
bans on other modes of transportation will follow, and not only in national
parks, but other public lands as well
