Doug,
After making some phone calls, I have decided not to apply for the open
committee position for the parks thing. I was not able to get any helpful
answers to my questions and could not get any feedback from the current
members. Among other things, I would not "play" well with a group that
conducts business in that matter. It would frustrate the hell out of me and
I am sure it would do no good for the people I would be representing.
You said to drop you a line if I decided not to pursue it, so I am.

Another problem I've heard RE kits have been experiencing is where the metal
'Heim' joints on the end of the control arms rub on the metal brackets
attached to the axle. There is so much pressure and friction at the point of
contact, the arms are rubbing/grinding through the brackets on the axles.
Wayne over at O-R repaired one that had worn all the way through and busted
out of the bracket. I also have a friend who, when he took his TJ to O-R to
have the frame gusseted they found some significant wear.
After hearing this and looking closely at the Teraflex set up.... in my next
life I think I will go with the teraflex. But if anyone is interested, Mark
and Wayne can do some reinforcing on the brackets to make this prob less
likely to occur.

I'm confused. The YJ needs a left drop front axle if it has a NP231 tcase. The quadratrac transfercase (not transmission) had right drop front and rear axles, not left front and right rear. Swapping out the 231 would be the only option for running a righthand drop front D44.
To my knowledge the *only* vehicle that came stock with a left drop D44 is the late 60s-early 70s broncos. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Some wagoneers with ¿quadratrac? transmissions have the diff on the right side, the only drawback is you must go with 6 lugs, and the rear differential it is not centered, I am not totaly sure about that.
Chris, also one of those J Jeep trucks, are 8 lug D44/60 would be a good combo IMO.

Just a thought, but my wagoneer D44 has a passenger side pumpkin,
where as the tcase in the YJ requires one on the driver's side. The
only option available I would imagine would be a 68-71 bronco D44.

Cool - I didn't think they put D44s on SJs in the 80s. I wonder what
transfer case they were using with those axles. Thx for the info :)

Jeff,
80-82 narrow Wagoneer front 44's have drivers side diffs and do not have
vacuum disconnects.
83-86 are also drivers side diffs but used vacuum disconnect. Im not sure
about 87 and up.
Stock Wagoneer gearing is going to suck...I think 3:31 is the lowest. The
spring perches will be about 1" further apart than the YJ. Just grind off
the old and reuse them or buy new ones.

Actually I perfer the idea of us all kicking in a buck or two towards
getting the ads removed completely from the group. If you are willing
to contribute $1 to removing the add send me a email and once we get 60
people I'll publish the list and coordinate with Dan on where to send
it. If you are willing to donate more so others don't have to let me

I have an original RE 4.5" lift (circa August 1997) on my ZJ. I think this is
pre-TJ. I have never had a problem with the rod-end bearings/heim joints. I
did; however, have the upper control arm bushings on the front axle
disintegrate. The mechanic who replaced them suggested that the control arm
angles (not the same as the factory control arms) may have helped in the
premature failure. I now have approx 20k miles on the new bushings. They show no
signs of deteriorating. It should be noted that RE is no longer using rod end
bearings in their control arm design. They are using a modified version called a
'johnny joint'. Two reasons I can think of that they stopped using rod end
bearings: Noisiness, and there are some states that don't allow rod end bearings
to be used in suspension assemblies.

Subject: Trail Report - Chiva Falls 8-19-00
OK, I know this is nearly two weeks later, but it took me that long before I
could finally download the pictures from my camera.
This is my first attempt at a trail report and I'm trying to recall
everything that happened, so bear with me.....
Date: 8-19-2000
Where: Chiva Falls
Attendees: Alan & Brent (Gold YJ), Brent & Jason (Red TJ), Ryan (Blue CJ),
Sinan (Orange and White GMC)
We met up at the Circle K on Tanque Verde, east of Houghton. The original
plan was to leave at 9:30. We weren't quite sure who was showing up for the
run. Ryan thought a couple of Jeeps from Phoenix were coming as well. We
waited until about 9:45 and left for the trail.
This was my first trip off road where I was actually going to need to use my
4 low. I wasn't really sure what to expect, so I was pretty excited. I have
a bone stock TJ and I was really looking forward to seeing what it could do.
The first major obstacle was Three Feathers. We arrived and there was
another group heading out while we were heading in. A couple of guys in a
blue CJ were having trouble making it up the line they chose. I think they
were having clutch troubles and kept having to stop and fix whatever was
breaking. We watched them for a while and decided they were handling their
situation fairly well and decided to continue on.
I was a little apprehensive to make that first drop down Three Feathers, but
decided there's no better way to learn about four wheeling than just doing
it. I made it down with only minor scraping and only stalled once or twice.
I didn't think I was doing too bad for my first time 4 wheeling.
We stopped at a dry creek bed for about 10-15 minutes for a quick lunch and
headed towards the falls. It had been raining the night before, so there was
actually a little bit of water falling. Alan, Ryan and Sinan played at the
last obstacle near the falls. I thought Ryan came pretty close to rolling
his '51 flat fender. But, we were able to run a strap from Alan's TJ and
straighten him out.
Alan and Brent had to get going so they went ahead of the rest of us on the
way out. We stopped again at the dry creek bed for another quick snack.
While we were waiting, a gold and white TJ pulled up and asked if we were
with AZVJC. It was the members that came up from Phoenix. They didn't
realize how far the Circle K was from the highway and got there a little
after we left.
After they arrived, another group showed up (not AZVJC members - I hope). I
thought it was kind of disgusting to see most of the drivers drinking beers
as they pulled up. That's the last thing we all need out on the trails.
We took a wrong turn after leaving the creek bed and realized we were going
the wrong way. After we got straightened out, we got back to Three Feathers
and Sinan an Ryan did a little more three wheeling action. Sinan missed an
ideal line by a few inches and settled nicely into a rut. We tied an end of
his winch line to Ryan's CJ and got him back on track. His right front tire
must have gotten pinched and ended up flat. But, after he got it pumped up,
we headed on out.
I had a really good time. I just want to thank the guys that were there for
all the help they gave me with spotting. I looked under my rig when I got
home and noticed a few scrapes and scratches on the tranny skid and my nerf
bars. I also got a few minor dents on my gas skid. I think that's one skid
that I really need to upgrade before I head out on an equally rated trail
again. But, that's what skids are for right?
If anyone's interested, I've posted some photos of the run on Photopoint.
(http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=904207&a=8443711) Feel free to
download and post on other sites as you see fit.

Badlands this weekend... If you've never been there
you'll want to take it all in... Start with the green
trail but it may be a little boring for you "Rock

After you've done those go to the office and ask for
Troy... Ask Troy to take you out to Mission
Impossible... It's a new hardcore trail that is prolly
just what you guys are looking for!!!!
Attica is a great place but then again here in Indiana
it's all we've got... We do go up to Michigan and run
the sand dunes at Silver Lake quite a bit also...

Jeff,
80-82 narrow Wagoneer front 44's have drivers side diffs and do not have
vacuum disconnects.

If anyone's interested, I've posted some photos of the run on Photopoint.

download and post on other sites as you see fit.

Now lets not forget that they all have thier pros and cons...Tera-Flex has
a control arm problem of thier own...they break in the middle at the twist
point and I will take alittle rubbing over breaking any day...and lets not
forget that the RE will out ramp the Tera-Flex. Tera-Flex does make a good
lift but it would take alot for me to change from my RE knowing all that I
know now about them.
My 2 cents

Hi Mike. There will most likely be a run. We have anywhere form 1 to 3 runs
going on almost every weekend. As time gets closer, post when you'll be in
town. I'm sure we can put a run together.

I looked at TeraFlex when I was looking for a lift kit for the ZJ. Their
initial design had a lot to be desired, but I understand that is has
improved. Like you I wouldn't trade the RE suspension for another brand
-- or even the newer RE suspension parts. The RE kit has never let me
down. The Jeep on the other hand .....

Thanks to everyone that offered advice on where to find a 44 at a reasonable
price. My buddy was overwhelmed with the response and will now be joining the
group. You can see our jeeps at www.azrocks.alloffroad.com

I sure wish that I could hook up with you's at the
Badlands this weekend... If you've never been there
you'll want to take it all in... Start with the green
trail but it may be a little boring for you "Rock
Guys", next move on to the orange, pink, white...
