To whom it may concern,

Not to sound like every other complaining asshole out there today, but I
recently ordered a Con- ferr roof rack for a TJ from 4 wheel parts
wholesalers. When I called and inquired about the product, I was told by
Jason that the basket was included and it also included an expanded metal
type floor. Then when I visited your web site, you had a picture of a TJ rack
and it showed the basket and everything. There was no mention of the rack
coming without the basket. If I would have know this, I would have ordered a
different brand like WP Warrior ($250) or Olympic ($210) instead of $295
(internet pricing) regular retail $362.00.

I thought that Con-ferr offered a superior product because they came highly
recommended, I was evidently wrong. This rack is so flimsy I can't even run
my spare up there, after 4 wheel wholesalers told me it was rated at 200 +/-
lbs.

Anyway, I'm pretty pissed off about the whole thing because I had to install
it because I was leaving for a trip to Colorado where I had to have a rack in
order to carry all my gear. Now I can't even return this thing.

At the risk of sounding like a complete prick, I belong to a 300+ member jeep
club in Phoenix and plan copy this letter to our e mail list.

If you guys have any interest in customer service, it would be nice to put a
note on your web site that the basket is not included with your roof rack.

As for the people in the club- GO TO O-R FAB ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Mark
and Wayne build a far superior product !!! I am going to have them fab me a
new one and beef it up with heavier tubing, a basket and a center support
that attaches right behind the door where the tub mounts to the roll bar and
what ever other ideas they might have ?? I hope all of you learn from my
mistake.

Since you made it through the break in period, you should be OK. If towing a trailer is next on the list, I might give it a few more miles before trying that. I had my 4.56s put in this spring, and the difference between the first 10 stop and when I finally worked up to 50 miles.....the diff was much cooler just after those first 50 miles of breaking in. Although it did not mention it, I also did about 20 miles of 4HI on a gravel road as part of my break-in so my front set would get some load applied to them, rather than just coasting along.

I've been meaning to post this awhile, but when you work as much as me you don't get around to it.. A few weeks ago a friend and I made new steering linkage for my Jeep. We used 1" 1.88 DOM seamless tubing, 5/8 Heim joints with a 1/2 hole, grade 8 bolts and castle nuts. It turned out excellent and everyone at Terminator on Friday can check it out. The only mistake I can see was the 5/8 didn't tap into the 1.88 tubing as good as we would have liked. So we welded a grade 8 nut on each end of the tubing to make sure their more than enough threading for the heim joints. If I were to do it again I would use 3/4 Heims and drill out knuckles more. My buddy did most of the work because he owns most of the tools (something about if I touch his welder I die) His prices are very reasonable, he's using the money to buy more tools so he can start a metal fabrication business. He has years of experience making stainless steel furniture and is flat out amazing with a Mig.. Can't wait to see what he can do with a Tig.. I bought the Heim joints down at a place called Ellis Racing for about $13.50 a piece and the tubing ran about $40 from Interstate Steel. The bolts and everything else ran about $20. So your price would be parts plus my friends labor. His name is Justin, many of you know him because he's been on about 7-8 runs with me, his cell number is 602.509.4550.. Give him a call and just tell him your from the AZVJC and see what he can do. He lives in North Phoenix, Bell and Tatum area.. Our next project is SOA and a 6 point cage for my Jeep. Anyways, if you want to check out some crappy pictures I took goto http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=627116&a=7679139

When I go SOA I'll drill out the knuckles and put both the drag and tie on top.. I had the drag on top before, just moved it back when I bought a droped pitman arm, don't want bump steer.. This new setup is so much stonger it's sick. 1" 1.88 tubing is seriously thick. The Heim joints are stronger and much more flexy than the tierods.. The problem with putting the drag and tie on top of the knuckles with SOA is the leafs are at the same height as the top of the knuckle. Then you have to fab up something to raise the mounting point to the knuckle so everything is above the tie rod. If and when that happens when I go SOA, then we will build something for it.. and I'll post the pic's..

On the subject of wearing out delete keys...have you ever considered
unsubscribing then re-subscribing to the digest version? You get one email
per day (roughly) that contains all the traffic in numbered messages. This
would greatly limit the stress on your delete key. I was driven to
distraction by continually arriving emails that were filling up the allotted
space in my mailbox - which I needed for business purposes. I eventually
had to transfer some clients to a webmail address, but the slower speed was
inconvenient to say the least. I'm not looking to get into the middle of
things here, just trying to propose a possibly unconsidered solution. Happy
Trails!

attend either event.

Subject: LU - Anti-access SWFA Alert

From Terry Heslin:

Outdoor Enthusiasts:

While we agree that the BLM could improve motorized recreation
management, and address problems and opportunities in the field--we
believe that campaigns that
are based on half-truths and hyperbole are divisive and unproductive.
Further, such campaigns always play "win/lose, or no deal". That is we
(anti-access) win, you
(mechanized recreationists) lose, or no deal. We believe that win/win
solutions to land management challenges are achievable through hard work
in a collaborative
planning environment.

The post below originates with the anti-access SWFA organization. Much
of the inflammatory rhetoric in that post is designed to incite the
ignorant, e.g. this
statement:

"Technological advances have created a new breed of machines that can
enter and destroy the most remote -- and vulnerable -- landscapes.
Off-road vehicles pollute every environment they enter, expelling 20 to
30 percent of their oil and gasoline, unburned, into the air and water".

We are mystified as to what this "new breed of machines" could be. ATVs
are the newest addition to the recreational vehicle family--and they've
been around since
the seventies. Any guesses on the origin of the fuel and oil "factoids"?
You would think that "technological advances" would provide for better
fuel and oil
efficiency. This is how urban legends are born.

Here is another doozie:
"93% OF BLM LAND OUTSIDE ALASKA OPEN TO ORVs"

This shrill bit of innuendo would lead one to believe that the lands are
literally "open" to cross country vehicle travel or somehow available to
vehicle travel--regardless of topography; canyons, mountains, etc. It is
astonishing that these organizations maintain any credibility after

ACTION: Restore balance to BLM's ORV policy

Dear Public Land Activist,

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is developing a strategy to address
the growing problem of dirt bikes and other off-road vehicles on our
public lands. The BLM has the authority, through existing executive
orders and regulations, to implement an effective ORV management
program.
Take
action! Send your comments to the BLM by Aug. 31
fromhttp://www.wilderness.org/standbylands/orv/blm_orv.htm(http://www.wilderness.org/standbylands/orv/blm_orv.htm)

93% OF BLM LAND OUTSIDE ALASKA OPEN TO ORVs
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), our nation's largest public land
owner, currently allows dirt bikes and other off-road vehicles on over
90%
of the land outside Alaska under its jurisdiction. Meanwhile, off-road
vehicles (ORV) have become more powerful and are able to push deeper
into
the backcountry, gouging new paths through forests, valleys, and
hillsides; punching through fragile deserts and grasslands; polluting
lakes, rivers,
streams, and wetlands.

That, coupled with essentially no management or limits on ORVs by the
BLM, means that these machines are out of control throughout BLM lands
and are causing extensive damage.

Recognizing this enormous threat, the BLM has acknowledged the enormous
magnitude of the problem -- that ORVs are out of control -- and is in
a national process to craft a strategy addressing the problem of all
types of off-road vehicles abusing our land. The agency currently is
gathering the
public's ideas and comments about the problem. This input will provide
local BLM land managers a framework to address issues such as the
amount of land designated for ORV use, regulations, trends in
management, route
inventory needs, resources issues, special management and sensitive
areas and resources, monitoring, education, law enforcement, and budget.

FASTEST GROWING THREAT
As a result of technological advances, the development of a
well-organized ORV lobby, and the establishment of new ORV routes on
public lands
-- largely uncontrolled -- off-road vehicles are now one of the fastest
growing threats to the natural integrity of our public lands.

Technological advances have created a new breed of machines that can
enter and destroy the most remote -- and vulnerable -- landscapes.
Off-road vehicles pollute every environment they enter, expelling 20 to
30 percent of their oil and gasoline, unburned, into the air and water.

RESTORING BALANCE
The BLM has the authority, through existing executive orders and
regulations, to implement an effective ORV management program.
Reasonable
measures are desperately needed to restore balance to the use and
protection of BLM lands -- public lands that belong to ALL Americans. It
doesn't
mean closing all public lands to ORVs, but the current, largely
uncontrolled scenario needs to be corrected.

TAKE ACTION
You can help ensure the Bureau of Land Management's ORV program is an
effective one. The BLM is accepting comments on their ORV policy,
but only through August 31. Send comments from
http://www.wilderness.org/standbylands/orv/blm_orv.htm(http://www.wilderness.org/standbylands/orv/blm_orv.htm),
or send them directly to the
address below. Tell the BLM that their final ORV management strategy
should contain the following:

- ORVs should only be allowed on routes that are clearly marked with
signs indicating they are open.
- The BLM should designate routes as open *only* a) after a study
determines that the routes will not cause adverse environmental impacts;
and b)
where BLM can demonstrate it can monitor the impact of ORVs and enforce
existing rules and laws protecting the land from ORV damage.
- BLM should prohibit ORV use in legislatively or administratively
proposed wilderness areas, inventoried roadless areas, and in Wilderness
Study
Areas (WSAs).
- Unauthorized routes, including "existing" routes created illegally by
ORVs, should be closed, and environmentally damaging routes restored to
non-motorized uses such as hiking and mountain biking.
- BLM should stop building new ORV routes, and redirect funds to
monitoring, enforcement, and restoration.

Subject: Where to buy a gas tank??

Hey everyone,

One last question (I hope!)...

My gas leak is a cracked tank. Some dope who worked on the Jeep before I
bought it tightened the straps too much and pinched the tank against the
skid plate, creating a crease (now turning into a crack) along its entire
length. Is there any place (local?) that would carry a tank for an 87 YJ
besides the dealerships? It's a 19gal, poly tank. However, it does not
match pictures of any of the tanks in 4-wheel drive hardware mag?!?!?! The
sending unit has a rectangular flange and is screwed to the tank (no lock
ring).

TIA for the help (AGAIN!)

Tom

Subject: Be warned of Bill Luke Chrysler service

I just wanted to share my 1st and only experience with Bill Luke
Chrysler (Camelback and I-17) with 300 of my closest jeeping friends.

I had Bill Luke Chrysler fix a cooling problem on my XJ (they were at
the right place at the right time). I picked up the vehicle when it
was done (last Thursday) and on the drive home I noticed right away
that the air conditioning vents weren't working at all. As it was
rush hour traffic and I've got a friend with me I drove home hoping
the problem would fix itself. On Monday I called the dealership and
explained the problem and and that I was sure it was a result of the
original work. Tuesday I dropped off the XJ and waited for it to get
fixed. I was charged a diagnostic fee of $38 to determine that a
vacuum line was disconnected under the bumper. I explained to the
Service Advisor that that was a direct result of the original work
since the vacuum line *had* to be disconnected to remove the radiator
(they did remove the radiator).

On a side note, I did originally tell the Service Advisor that I
thought the new problem was a result of the airbag sensor recall
because they had to remove part of the dash to relocate the sensor.
I tried to explain to him that this new problem was a result of the
original work. The Service Advisor said he based his troubleshooting
(diagnosis of the vacuum system) on that fact and it had nothing to
do with the airbag recall. Agreed. BTW, diagnosis of the vacuum
system did lead to finding disconnected vacuum line under the bumper.

So I got charged for diagnosing a problem that was created by
unfinished original work. Yesterday I got a call from Bill Luke for
a customer service survey. I explained (nicely) that I was unjustly
charged for the diagnostic fee and I will never spend another penny
at Bill Luke either through repairs of my 3 Jeep vehicles or purchase
a vehicle from them unless I'm reimbursed the diagnostic fee. I also
explained that I wasn't expecting to get reimbursed, but if I did, I
would most likely use their services again.

I had a phone conversation with the Service Advisor today (he seemed
bitter that I gave him a bad survey) and he explained there was
nothing they would do (I'm sure this situation does happen
frequently). I again explained that I felt I was unjustly charged
and they would lose a customer over a $38 charge (I spent $560 on the
first service charge). He seemed fine with that. After that phone
conversation, I decided I would tell 300 of my closest AZ jeep
friends about my Bill Luke experience. The Service Manager has my
number, although I doubt I'll hear from him/her. It does surprise me
that a company would lose a customer over a charge this small - they
have a good chance of recouping that money within the next visit.
Definately not now.

All in all, I am frustrated that I can't find a decent dealership to
do work on my vehicle. Just thought I'd pass along my experience.
Thanks for letting me rant a little. Maybe I'm way off base here,
but I don't think quality of service and customer service like this
should be tolerated.
