The biggest electrical culprits are the TPS and coil for the 4.0l I-6
engine. A failed TPS will cause starting problems and idle problems. The
best indicator that the TPS is failing is engine stumbling and dying. I
have replaced three on of them on the ZJ. Each time I have performed all
the igintion system and fuel system diagnostistics defined in the
factory service manual before buying parts. Diagnostics take a couple
hours to perform but its better than throwing money at the Jeep and not
getting any results.
Hope this will make you a littler happier: Most of these parts are
available aftermarket so they cost less.
Good luck

If I remember the details of the CPS (the more coffee I am getting, the
better the memory is!), the person was able to just plug and unplug the
connector several times, then all was better. Obviously a bit of corrosion
had built up on the connector.

Subject: [LU] - Congressional Hearing for Forest Fires
[Deleted] has sent you an article from The Washington Times.
-----------------------------------------------------------
PANEL TO PROBE FIREFIGHTING FUNDS DIVERSION
Audrey Hudson
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
-----------------------------------------------------------
A House subcommittee will hold hearings next month to
determine why a Bureau of Land Management funding request to
prevent forest fires, now blazing through the West, went
instead to President Clinton's lands legacy initiative and
new national monuments.
Montana's sole congressman, Republican Rick Hill, requested
the hearing yesterday after The Washington Times reported
millions of dollars were slashed from the federal
firefighting agency's budget request.
Mr. Hill said the administration's "misplaced priorities
have exacerbated" this year's record-setting forest fire
season. Montana has been hardest hit, with 30 fires covering
630,000 acres.
"Clinton and [Vice President Al] Gore have taken many steps
to ensure funding for their lands legacy initiative, but it
now looks like their real legacy will be the historic fires
of 2000," Mr. Hill said.
Doug Crandall, chief of staff for the House subcommittee on
forest resources and forest health, said the panel has
agreed to Mr. Hill's request and will hold a hearing after
Congress members return from their August recess.
The lands legacy initiative is Mr. Clinton's conservation
effort to purchase land and preserve it as open green space.
Mr. Clinton also has declared nearly a dozen new national
monuments during his two terms in office.
Congressional and Interior Department aides confirmed the
White House cut the Interior Department's request of $322
million for fire preparedness, or prevention, to $305
million for this year. At the same time, the White House
increased its budget request for land acquisitions from $15
million to $49 million.
Documents obtained by The Washington Times show an even
greater cut proposed for next year's firefighting season.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) requested $400 million,
which the White House slashed to $297 million in its 2001
budget request -less than current funding.
At the same time, the White House increased the agency's
land acquisition fund from $49 million to $60 million.
Mr. Clinton recently announced $150 million in emergency
funding for firefighting efforts.
"We could have all the preparation in the world, but there
is no way of knowing we would have this kind of year," said
John Wright, Interior Department spokesman.
The National Interagency Fire Center yesterday reported 83
fires burning in 10 Western states and Florida, consuming
1.3 million acres. Wildfires have burned 5.5 million acres
this year, destroying hundreds of homes and forcing the
evacuation of thousands of people. Eleven persons have died
in the fires, nine of them firefighters.
The denied preparedness funds would have paid for training
and essential equipment such as tanker trucks and shovels.
"We're in the middle of the fire season, and we don't have
the basic assets to fight the fires that are overwhelming
us," said Republican Sen. Larry E. Craig of Idaho, where
more than 500,000 acres of forests are on fire.
"We should have had more people prepared and trained, but in
their mad rush to an environmental legacy, this
administration has ignored the basics of managing our
resources," Mr. Craig said.
Les Rosenkrance, former director of the National Interagency
Fire Center, may be called upon to testify at the hearing
about his January warning to Bureau of Land Management
officials that the low level of funding for wild-land fire
prevention would impair the agency's ability to prepare for
the current fire season.
"Should calamity strike in the form of being unprepared for
a severe fire season that results in injuries or deaths
among fire personnel, the agencies will be held
accountable," Mr. Rosenkrance said in the memo.
He said the agency has the prerogative to fund the land
acquisitions and national monument improvements, "but my
argument is these programs don't put the public at risk. By
curtailing preparedness projects like in this budget, you
put people at risk."
Mr. Hill spent the weekend touring fire sites throughout
central and western Montana, where he said a lack of
resources is having a substantial impact on firefighters'
ability to combat the wildfires.
"I've heard some shocking reports from the people on the
front lines, stories of hotshot crews forced to sit waiting
in buses because commanders weren't available to set up
command and control centers," he said.
Mr. Hill also heard concerns from his constituents that
federal employees were interfering with private landowners'
efforts to protect their property from the fires.
"There is a whole host of troubling reports on the lack of
preparation for, and the execution of, fire suppression,
from misallocated resources to poor command structure to
possibly illegal interference with private landowners," Mr.
Hill said.
"Although many factors contributed to this fire season,
there are many things that should have been done
differently, and we need to get answers to some tough
questions," he said.
The same House subcommittee last year held a hearing on the
disastrous Florida wildfires of 1998.
Chairman Helen Chenoweth-Hage, Idaho Republican, said the
panel discovered then that federal firefighters could barely
muster the resources to fight two complex fire systems - one
in Idaho and the other in Florida - at the same time.
"It is unfortunate that this sudden concern has waited to
emerge until after our lands are burning," Mrs.
Chenoweth-Hage said.

I totally agree, this "greenies" thing is getting out of hand, I
thought that the Idea was to down and throw "punches" at them not Us.
I do not want to leave the List and I cannot claim immunity to the
greenie argument, I have had my share of punches, but it seems like
some people are no longer getting along because of this thing, which
goes to show that even when they are not here they can still affect
everyone in a negative way. Pretty sad if you ask me.
Opinions are opinions and they are like assholes if you don't have
them, something is really wrong with you because I have both.
If i offended anyone then please except my deepest appoligy. I only
wanted to hear opinions, why because that is what makes a person a
person.
Anybody know of some good trails around Tucson besides Chiva Falls
and Charouleau Gap. I am getting bored of those trails.

I have an electrical problem that I have no answer for, thought maybe one of
you, been there done this before.
The engine runs great 99.9% of the time then when crossing and intersection
or just driving down the road the engine up and quits. No warning, no missing
just dies dead. In some cases I can turn the key off and start it right back
up no problems. The radio and accessories continue to work. It will run for a
day or so and then do it again. Some times it will not start, just crank away
and then 10-20 minutes later work just fine. It has died 3 times just sitting
at a red light, not a great position when the darn thing goes red, and I'm
dead. I spent many hours checking all the wiring for a short, but no luck. I
have an MSD install, but not sure why it would be the problem. So before I
start the replacement witch hunt thought I would throw it out to the group.
Thanks for and thoughts.

Not to start a war over postings....but it seems to me there has been runs
every single weekend all summer long being posted. I am forever (and I do
not mind) deleting runs about Chia Falls, Charloueasu Gap, XJ cooling
problems, for sale postings, someone that couldn't get their carrier out,
keeping a trail log, someone wanting stock springs, Linda IDing a t-case, CJ
brake and clutch option, someone wanting a tranny, a LONG discussion about
4" lifts in Utah, XJ emission questions, doing a spring over project, Sean
selling his TJ, a t-case not staying in 4HI, the right carb for a 4.2L
engine, clutch noise problems, something going on over by Globe, FR42 was
run about two weeks back, 4 runs on Terminator if memory serves me correctly
(including some awesome BigIron participation I believe), Bulldog Canyon,
many postings for night runs, heck, I can't remember all of them.....am I
wrong or what here?
There is also postings of broken Jeeps, carbs, George in search of a FSJ,
George's new TJ, Linda and her various topics...injectors, Rubicon run,
on-board hot water, someone with a roll bar question, regearing and a
lengthy exchange on powertrax and lockright lockers, Len getting rid of the
non-titled Jeep in his back yard....heck, this list keeps going on and on
too.
(most of those topics all came from the last 8 days of deleted mail)
Eric, there are certainly political comments going back and forth, but there
is no way you will convince me that there is not a ton of direct Jeeping
topics going down all the time and runs happening every weekend. Sorry, I
will not buy into your comments.
My delete key is about all used up too....I don't care much about XJ
emissions or XJ injectors, spring over projects, the Terminator, carbs for
4.2L engines, clutch noise probelms, on-board hot water (sorry Linda)....but
the point is, there is a lot of stuff posted here that may OR may not appeal
to you. That is why they made the delete key! So we ALL learn to use it.

the real question I have to ask is if there is any way to upgrade my front

something like that, I have acces to almost any kind of tool in some shops,
so I can just take my axle and get the work done, but I want to know how to
do it, what to use, where to get HIEM joints, how thick should I go, if some
of you has pictures of this that can share, I will apreciate it

Monday I made a quick run up Box Canyon late in the day, Not smart

We got through the canyon OK but the road to Mineral Mtn. was washed
out and not passable. There is a wall of rocks about a mile or two
up the road. It was dark so I could have made a wrong turn some
where but in any case there was a lot of change in the canyon.

Recently my brothers and I were out wheeling when one of the jeeps started
running really bad. On one particular off camber spot the sputtering motor
nearly caused the jeep to roll over due to the lack of a controllable idle
speed. We checked everything out and all seemed to be good. The jeep had just
had a complete tune up so every thing was new. After several attempts to cure
the problem we decided we would have lunch, let the jeep cool down and see
what we could figure out then. After we ate the jeep started up and ran like
new. We were a bit perplexed until we saw were the coil had been arced and
grounded to the manifold. We couldn't figure out what had caused it until my
12 year old Daughter pointed out that that's were we had heated up our
burritos wrapped in tin foil!! Duh Dad.

Meeting place: Table Mesa "Parking lot". See attachment for rough
directions. Expect the last escort to the trail to leave at around 7:00pm,
So be there before then. If you get there before 7:00, and no one's there,
wait a bit, someone will be along shortly. If you won't be there before
7:00pm, running late or whatever, and you don't know where you are going,
Get on Channel 4 of your CB and make your intent known.
Those of you that know where the trail is, please check the "Parking Lot"
for rigs that want to help, and need an escort in!
I'm going to be up there at 5:00pm, I will take the trailer and truck back
to the end of the Terminator trail, providing I have at least one Jeep with
me, and will meet you all on the trail. As people arrive, we can start
hauling out the pieces. With 8 Jeeps in, I think we could pair up on the
haul out. Preferably one unloaded vehicle in front with one towing a piece
behind, that way the one up front can spot, be a winch anchor or lend a pull
strap if needed. Haulers,Trust me on this: Do not be shy to take a strap,
winch cable, or whatever. Just go until the wheels spin, then stop and get
help! Don't break!!
If there aren't enough parts to go around, we'll have a "Trail Parade" to
celebrate The final removal!!
While doing this, let's keep our eyes on the trail for rubbish or fallen
pieces, and pick them up. maybe co - pilots or spotters can help out with
this.
I still need people to help load the trailer at the end of the trail. There
are already parts there, so this potentially could begin as the "drag out"
occurs. If nobody wants to miss the trail action, I'll understand, and we
can do it when everything gets to the trailer. Keep in mind, I would like
the front of the trailer to have all the heavy pieces, like Axles and motor.
Bring chain, heavy work gloves, tow rope, plenty of water, and flashlights
in addition to whatever else you would pack.
On the confirmed attendance list I have: (in no particular order)
DougB (and Clan)
Dan Frazer
Keith Auble
Roger Tomas
Devon Whitney
Chris (cmandrick)
Todd Jaramillo
Mike Anderson
Ross Skinner
Greg Banfield Bronco owner :( Hey, someone's gotta crash the Jeep party!

Hopefully you all will make it, and more are welcome.

Subject: Delete Key Solution? Re: Digest Number 259
On the subject of wearing out delete keys...have you ever considered
unsubscribing then re-subscribing to the digest version? You get one email
per day (roughly) that contains all the traffic in numbered messages. This
would greatly limit the stress on your delete key. I was driven to
distraction by continually arriving emails that were filling up the allotted
space in my mailbox - which I needed for business purposes. I eventually
had to transfer some clients to a webmail address, but the slower speed was
inconvenient to say the least. I'm not looking to get into the middle of
things here, just trying to propose a possibly unconsidered solution. Happy
Trails!

We got through the canyon OK but the road to Mineral Mtn. was washed

Duh Dad.

Hi All
I just went to the ASA Convention last Saturday. The Jamboree is 19 to 22
October in the same location ETC. Sandee needs lots of volunteers to help out
so if anyone is willing please give her an email at the above address. The
info will be up on the web sight shortly. The Wheel Dust paper got delayed
due to printer problems but should be available shortly. The fees will be a
little higher this year thanks to the BLM but I am not sure what they are
right now.

Subject: TR ZJ Terminator Friday 8/25/00 5:00- 7:00pm
Linda Luik

Happy
Trails!
