Subject: early CJ brake and clutch options?

Hi all --

I've got a '68 Kaiser CJ5 that has the original clutch and brake
linkages. The brake master cylinder is mounted under the floorboards
with the brake pedal and clutch pedal going through the floor instead
of newer 'hung' pedal assemblies starting in '72.

My questions:

I want to replace the clutch and brake assemblies with a more
reliable configuration, preferably hung pedals, although I don't need
to run power brakes so I don't have to use a power brake booster. I
have found a mail order shop that sells hung pedal assemblies for
race cars with 3 m/cs (front brake, rear brake, and clutch) as well
as clutch slave cylinders. Anyone done this conversion? Now is the
opportune time to convert to a hydrolic clutch since I'm replacing
the seats and floorboards. Anyone converted their mechanical clutch
linkage to a master/slave cylinder setup? The master cylinders come
in 3/4", 7/8", and 1" bore - any clue which bore I should choose to
run Scout calipers and drums (this is important because I won't be
running power brakes)?

I know Advance Adapters sells a nice chain clutch linkage replacement
for early jeeps, I would still have to deal with pedals that run
through the floorboards. Anyone have 1st hand experience with the AA
chain-drive clutch linkage and is it worth the money?

Any advise would be appreciated from Jeepers that have done similar
setups before.

Jeff

Hey Jeff I cnt help you much, but my race had the three master cylinder setup
for the front, rear, and clutch. It worked great and never had any problems
with it.I am not sure what company you are talking about, but mine were from
Afco.

Good turnout Friday nite for the work run. In attendance were
Bob Trenton
Mike Anderson
Jeff Meade
Eric ?
Keith Auble
If I missed anyone, I'm sorry.
Bob met me at the trailhead and we transferred some gear over to his
Jeep. and went in the front way. While we were setting up, Jeff showed up.
This is where all the breakage begins. His clutch linkage bent, but he was
able to make it work. Next 3 Jeeps on the trail, next 3 Jeeps break. Mike
Launches his rear coil spring like something out of a Loony Tunes cartoon.
He also tears his shock off in the process. Eric rips the Pass. side control
arm axle bracket off the housing, and Keith completely Tacos his Tie rod.
All within the first 3 obstacles. All before 9:00PM.
I stick to the plan of cutting up the ZJ. we all manage to get the axle cut
out, engine cut out and what's left of the body cut in half. I go back to
Mike's Jeep, we all come up with a plan to fix it. Since the Left front is
approx 3' off the ground, we decide to tie the spring in with wire to hold
it in place and winch it forward until the suspension settles. We used the
winch for better control of vehicle movement, and the wire is so no one's
little piggies get smashed. With the coil in place, we beat the Smithereens
out of the shock pin on a rock until it reasonably straight, then re-attach
it to the mount. Now that he is going, I send him up to the ZJ to clear the
trail of all the parts. I work my way back to Eric and weld the mount back
to his axle, after he beats it reasonably straight. We decide to continue
running the trail, and we will come back in at the front to get Keith's Jeep
fixed and out. We load up and start moving out. All went well until the
crack about 100yds from the exit. My Turn!!
I succeed in pulling the threads off of every nut holding my spindle to
the steering knuckle, snapping at least half of the studs off, fragging the
inner hub bearing and one cap on the axle u-joint! Now that's cool breakage!
We get it jacked up in the crack, (that sounds funny) everything taken
apart, and figure out what we need to fix it. We decided to leave Keith
there to camp with the Jeeps. Eric would run his GF home. Mike would give me
a ride back to my house, where we both would sleep, then round up parts and
meet back up there. This is at 3:00 AM. Back at house at 5:00am. Sleep until
9:00am. Grab spare spindle from parts pile. No studs or nuts, We try
Checker, no luck there, decide to cut our time as it's getting hotter as the
day wears on, we take the front-end of Ross' Jeep apart, and scavenge it for
parts. We call Ross. ( AFTER we were done raping his Jeep!!) Bad news for
him, we are using his stuff, Good news, I hafta replace his stuff! We go
back up to the parking lot, meet with Eric and head back to the trail with
Sausage muffin breakfast for Keith. We get the Jeep fixed, under the shade
of a tarp, and a light breeze blowing, and we are moving again. That is,
until the rocks claim a sidewall on Mike's front right tire. We Change the
tire. We head to Keith's Jeep, get it out, and then go back up to the
parking lot load up and go home. 24 hour ordeal, finally done......Until
next Friday.......

Anybody wanna break something??

I left out all the fun that was had along the way, because this is
supposed to be a trip report, not a book!

Subject: Re: opinions wanted - hood vents

Thank you to everyone who replied.........

I'm still going to try the vented hood idea, but I didn't have time to do it
today. I did finally get my leaking valve covers fixed though ( I think ).
Suggestion to those of you who are or eventually will be running a small
block Chevy engine with an Edelbrock Performer manifold: be sure that
whatever kind of valve covers you run don't hit the manifold on the top.
The cheap chrome ones from Spectre have too long a flange on the side of the
gasket surface and never seal properly due to interference from the intake
manifold.

I removed the flex fan today and replaced it with a fixed blade fan of the
same diameter. The new fan is the same size and has the same number of
blades, but the blades have a much more radical pitch and move more air at
low engine speeds. Changing the fan (and the necessary mods to the fan
shroud depth to match) dropped the "normal" operating temp of the engine in
traffic by 2 or 3 degrees -- a little more than a needle width on my
gauge -- and also kept the engine temp under 200 (barely) even after sitting
in the driveway at idle for 20 minutes. This tells me that I'm very close
to my goal of keeping the engine under 190 degrees at all times - it just
needs a little more tweeking.

The cooling system that I have is about as good as it can get with all stock
parts, so my future plans are to install a high flow water pump (either from
FlowKooler or Edelbrock) and an external oil cooler -- along with some big
vents in the hood.

Keep in mind that my truck is not overheating, and that my current cooling
system is perfectly fine for everyday use. Rock crawling in Arizona during
the summer is not 'everyday use' however, and I'm rather anal about my
underhood temps. 200 degrees is really not that big a deal.......my daily
driver Buick runs a 195 degree thermostat stock. The only reason I'm hung
up on lowering the engine temp on the trail is because I want to be. The
truck runs fine as it is and has never been in danger of
overheating.........I just want a 'cool ride.'

see y'all next Saturday

I posted this to a couple of newgroups, but haven't got answer. I wonder

What are the differences between the NP201 and the NP205? They are both
gear driven transfer cases, have a 1.96:1 low range. NP201 is a two
stick. NP205 is a single stick Any other differences? I am wondering
which is the better transfer case.

Lisa: Do you know? I think the NP201 was used on military vehicles. I
could be wrong

Anyone have stock springs from a V-8 4x4 Grand Cherokee sitting around that
they would like to get rid of. MY wife wants larger tires and a little lift
in her 4.0 non 4x4 so I figure, compared to 4.0 engine weight to a V-8
weight difference the V-8 springs should lift it up a little. Or I can just
get 2inch spring spacers.

All I know about them is that the 201 was used in some early Dodges and
maybe some IH's, and the 205 was used more widely in Chevy's, Fords, IH, and
Dodges. The 201's may use an intermediate shaft between the tranny and
t-case, though I'm really not sure. The 205 came with a fairly high low
range (1.96:1 - at least that was the range in 71 to 80 Dodges) and came
either as bolt on's or divorced (intermediate shaft). Spline counts vary a
bit on the 205, depending on use (Ford, Chevy, etc.). Don't know about the
spline counts on the 201.

Is this a Power Wagon question?

Also - the 201 is physically bigger than the 205 - but not sure what that

PASS THIS ON TO ANYONE YOU HAVE AN E-MAIL ADDRESS FOR.

If you receive an email titled "Lets watch TV" DO NOT OPEN IT. It will

erase everything on your hard drive. This information was announced
yesterday morning from IBM; AOL states that "KALI" is a very dangerous
virus,
much worse than "Melissa,"and that there is NO remedy for it at this time.

Some very sick individual has succeeded in using the reformat function
from Norton Utilities causing it to completely erase all documents on
the hard drive. It has been designed to work with Netscape Navigator and
Microsoft Internet Explorer. It destroys Macintosh and IBM compatible
computers.

This is a new, very malicious virus and not many people know about it.

Pass this warning along to EVERYONE in your address book and please share it
with all your online friends ASAP so that this threat may be stopped.
Please practice cautionary measures and tell anyone that may have access to
your computer. Forward this warning to everyone that might access the
Internet. If you receive any mail with the following file attachments,
please do not open and delete them immediately. List of exe files not to be
opened -

DO NOT RUN and DO NOT LAUNCH THEM at all!!

There is no remedy or cure. They will completely wipeout all your data
in your hard disk and destroy all your emails!

The viruses are:
1) buddylst.exe
2) calcu18r.exe
3) deathpr.exe
4) einstein.exe
5) happ.exe
6) happy99.exe
7) japanese.exe
8) keypress.exe
9) kitty.exe
10) teletubb.exe

Do pass on this important message to all your friends and business
associates.

Subject: Why I am leaving Seattle... was: No AC even an option?

Too much rain and clouds really gets to me after a while. It's cold and nasty when you leave for work and cold and nasty on the way home. And the cost of living up here is tremendous. If you house is worth 130,000 to 160,000 down there, it's double that up here. My house is 10 miles from downtown Seattle (read 45 minute commute minimum) it's a 1600 sq ft rambler, 50 years old, 3 bedroom, 1 1\4 bath with a *tiny* lot and it's going to sell for $200,000+. It's an easy $300,000 for a decent 3 or 4 bedroom and unfortunately the wages are only 20% higher (not relational for sure!) You end up spending a higher percentage of your income on basic things.

I have two kids (6 and 3) and they are stuck in the house for 9 months because its cold and nasty out.

And don't get me started on the traffic... 2nd or 3rd worse in the COUNTRY! Ack!!! 2+ hours to go less then 20 miles from my house to Microsoft.

I know it's hot there. I have been there when it was 120* but I would still rather be too hot for three months then cold and wet for nine months.

And we can always move back (granted, we will be poorer and tired, but we will have done it and not regretted at least not trying.) And if we do like living down there, we can always come and vacation with our family up here and see the rain again! LOL

Thanks!

Jason

As I mentioned, I am moving down there this winter. I have a 97 TJ with no AC because well, there is absolutely NO use for AC on a Jeep in WA. But when it's 120 down there, is no AC even an option? Is it doable to just run a bikini top in the summer (for the shade)

Or maybe I should try to get the AC while up here (and in far less demand)

Thoughts?

Jason (it's 65 and rainy here now.. so long summer)

This is a hoax. This "virus" does not exist.

http://www.norton.com/avcenter/venc/data/lets.watch.tv.hoax.html

As far as the .exe's listed, it is _never_ a good idea to run an
untested .exe received via email. Or a .vbs either.

I received a virus warning from someone in this club. I deleted it, so I don't know who it came from. The virus warning, however, was a hoax.

Go to this web site. It describes the KALI virus as a "Virus Hoax"

Subject: Charouleau Gap Trail Report

Well The run to the Gap went well this weekend, only four people
including myself were able to make it. The run started at 8:15 and we
had some very interesting events during the run. There was a newbie
to the world of Four Wheeling, My brother in Law, He just bought his
Ford Truck a Little while ago and We found The the U-Joints were the
wrong size in his front Driveshaft, as a result we found that U-
joints from an 87 wrangler are the same size, and He used the Two
spares that I carry with me, we were at the First wash when they
broke. Then he found out that his truck really eats Gas when out four
wheelin, Thanks to a Late 70's Chevy Luv with an Electric Fuel pump
we got a couple of Gallons of extra Fuel in the Tank which got it out.

He was very funny in his response to the " Is that where we gotta go"
his answer was always" I'm not going up that ******* hill", or I'm
Not going to go down that Damn thing" very funny. But he was a good
sport.

About a Mile from the wash when you start the Decent from the Gap we
found an late 80's early 90's four door Cheroke off the road in a
really flat spot with no way to get it back on the road without a
wrecker. We went to inspect the jeep to see if anybody was hurt or
anybody had fallen down the ledge, when I went to the Jeep the Column
was Busted apart the Key switch was ripped apart and the Stereo was
missing, Figured It was stollen so we stayed away and took the Plate
number down. Other than that the Slide just passed the Cabin is
really washed out and was wet so it made for a fun Decent nothing you
could do could keep you from sliding so it was really a matter of
picking the right line and slippin down. We got to Oracle at about
5:30 so we really didn't do so bad as far as time goes, considering
we had a couple of hold ups.

When we got home we called the Jeep in to the Police Non-emergency,
It was not reported stolen, then we were told to call the Sheriff's
office and they were going to go out today check up on the vehicle.

By the way (this is funny), When I was on the phone with the Sheriffs
office , I told the Nice lady where we had spotted the Jeep, She
replied, "Hold on, I think that we were out there already yesterday,
Might be for the same vehicle.", When she came back she replied " No,
that was for a Golf Cart" So someone went Four wheelin with a golf
cart.

Pretty funny Ha!

In these emergency situations, wouldn't it make sense to grade the
road, put out the fire, and then "erase" the road after the fire was
out? Surely it's possible to re-plant vegetation, through some rocks
around, block entry, etc. and help make the road go away faster than
what Mother Nature would do. And this would probably be less costly
than fighting a fire that gets out of control.
