Actually, I was referring to Scott's post where he mentioned "that the
longer arm may tend to drag on the rocks more often". But, I see you
also mentioned the same disadvantage in your post too. So I agree with
both you and Scott.

I don't have AC either but just have a bikini top. I drive about 15
miles each way and it's ok, but sometimes HOT. I bring shorts to
wear on the really hot days.

I found a local company that sells an AC kit for $650 + install and
charging.

I got a lot of good replies from folks.. thanks. Sounds like it's doable to
go the 3 HOT HOT HOT months without AC. I might suffer the first summer, but
I think I will get used to it.

Unless I get a job down there where I need to be prim and proper, then I
might have to consider the $$$ but at least it will be winter when I get
there the prices should be a little better.

With thanks to Dan Frazer and Crystaltech.com, the web hosting
company Dan works for, we are now the proud owners of azvjc.org!
CrystalTech is offering us free hosting of the site in exchange for
some advertising on our pages. A small price to pay in my opinion.

Web.com, where we have registered azvjc.web.com, has been bitten by
the greedy bug and is now charging for the subdomain name service
that used to be free. Because of the huge investment Jon Loveless
has taken on with the decals, I have spent the $$ and registered this
name as well. We've got it for a year and can evaluate the need to
keep it next year.

So far I've footed the bill for the domain name registration and
web.com registration. Not a big deal. However, I'd like to offer
the opportunity to a member owned Jeep related business to cover the
costs in exchange for some advertising on the site. If there is no
interest, I'll probably just throw my web development companie's ad
on and write off the costs myself.

If you're interested in advertising, please send me an e-mail for
more information.

Set your bookmarks for www.azvjc.org or azvjc.web.com!! Visit the
site often as Mike Chatfield is working on some neat new things to
make the site one to be proud of!

Subject: Re: Opinions on RE's new Long Arm Kit Upgrade

From what I have heard, the RE kit is not being shipped right now.... they are redesigning their control arms.

The Teraflex kit (should be out soon) is going to have a bend manufactured in the control arms so as to prevent dragging on rocks. Their control arms will mount to a bracket that either bolts or welds to the frame (your choice).... unlike the RE kit that ties the control arms to the tranny crossmember (possibly a maintenance nightmare).

If it were me, I would wait and see what happens in the next 6 months. Warn and Tomken also have long arm kits in the works and Im sure Currie will follow. There is also a number of TJ owners with great fab skills working on long-arm suspensions of their own designs. Interesting times ahead for TJ suspensions... almost makes me want to keep mine!

Some of the benefits:
Decreased Torque Steer
Decreased Body Roll
Decreased squatting
Increased Balance
Front tires are kept on the ground much longer and will quickly climb an obstacle rather than get shoved back first.

Regards,
Larry

Pete,

From what I've gathered the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. Better offroad flex, increased clearnace at the t-case, much better ride on street, eliminates the problem of torque induced body roll which is common with all of the other lift kits. One drawback is that the longer arm may tend to drag on the rocks more often. I am very happy with the RE ultimate kit that I purchased last year. If I had bought my TJ now I would definitely go with the new kit for the reasons listed above. But since my TJ is not a daily driver I won't be upgrading.

Good luck,

Scott

Everything will drop back into place without any readjustment. Just be sure to
keep the left shim on the left and the right shim on the right and the caps on
the correct sides as well. In terms of pulling the carrier, get a HUGE breaker
bar, put one end into the carrier in some way and let the other end ride on the
edge of the case. Then push HARD! It should pop out, When putting it back
in, use a 2X4 or dead blow hammer and work it back in as best as possible.
Don't beat on the bearings too hard with anything hard. This will ruin them.
You should be able to hit them with a dead blow hammer or a 2X4 without hurting
them. Once you get it good and seated, you can reinstall the caps. DON'T use
the caps to completely pull the carrier into the case. I've "heard" of people
screwing things up by doing it this way. Using the caps to pull it in the last
little whisker of distance is fine. Just don't crank 'em like 1" while the
carrier drives in.

All-in-all, shouldn't be a problem. Feel free to give me a call on my cell
phone if you've got other questions. You should still have the number.

The orange bronco driven by Pat Gremlin who owns premier welders and the pul-pal, who was also at the rock-crawling championships here, has the long arms that extend to the middle. He broke one on the last obstacle on the first trail and welded it back together, but I would say he wheels pretty hard with that setup.

I have thought about going that route myself (but without a kit) but my main

it's that kits design or what.
I have heard the same thing from other sources that a longer control arm
will better the ride quality...

If you do go that route, please post the results to the list as I would live

through 3 months of it every year. With the unrelenting urban sprawl,

longer and longer. The monsoon storms, which used to cool the valley now
just make it more hot and humid. I am really looking forward to leaving
