Subject: Question for TJ owners RE: front lockers...

Hi,
I'm trying to assist a friend in the selection of a
locker for the front of his brand new TJ. He's trying
to do his homework before the purchase but keeps getting
conflicting info from the local vendors. One place tells
him to go Lockrite while another place says they're not
a good idea in the front without a hub conversion. The original
vendor tells him its not a problem since one of the axle shafts
is disconnected until you put the transfer case in 4WD.
Of course there's the ARB option. He's not opposed to the Lockrite
but does not want horrible street manners.

To further frustrate him he's gotten quotes from all the major vendors on
parts and installation and discovered that the prices varied considerably.
Yesterday he called the same place twice and got 2 different quotes that
varied by almost $500.:-(

So, any TJ owners running front lockers? Any experiences, pro or con?

Thanks,
Uncle Mike

Mike....concerning the "original vendor tells him its not a problem since
one of the axle shafts is disconnected until...." comment, tell your friend
to RUN. That vendor doesn't know squat about what he/she is talking about.
Disconnected front axles stopped with the YJs in '95. TJs have no
disconnect in the axle.

However....many TJ owners run a light locker in front, such as a LockRight.
It is my understanding that these lockers do not exhibit "normal" locker
characteristics until torque is applied via the input shaft, which is not a
problem when in 2WD. They are basically transparent until you slip into
4WD.

I myself am running a Detroit TrueTrac, which is a limited slip diff, but
there is certainly nothing wrong with a locker up front either. I am sure
the other TJ front locker owners will chip in with a comment on how they
like theirs.

Had the same problem. But It leaked ocationally and only in the summer.
Mine wasn't the seals so I bought rebuilt ones from linder Tech. The guy
says the factory jeep injectors suck. So he won't rebuild them, but he does
have replacements (bosch). I haven't had a problem yet. I paid $150.-set of

This is a very common problem with the 4.0 motor. Seal kit is about ~$15 and
easy to install. Pull the fuel rail and injectors, replace the o-rings, and
re-install.....should take less than 2 hours.

I've done the same research recently. Several people in this group
have the Powertrax no-slip in front, and report no affects at all
while in 2WD. Yes, the front axle is always live on the TJ, but
without torque being applied the no-slip is essentially transparent.

I've had a number of quotes for prices and installation. The most
consistent quotes have come from Fly-N-Hi at about 100-125 install
and
around 380 for the unit. Four Wheel Supply has given me the most
inconsistent prices along with some mis-information. Prices of 200
per
axle were quoted, and on a second call, they said it was unsafe on
the TJ and would NOT install it at all (without an $800 hub
conversion).

If you are interested in the no-slip, I can forward you some comments
from several national R&P dealers. I would recommend calling yourself
though and get their opinion.

Mike,

Was that you I talked to Saturday night? I was in the white TJ at Cambells
Mercantile and was heading out to P4W ranch where you were returning from.

Anyway... A LockRight will be almost completely transparent in the front of
a TJ when in 2 wheel drive. If he has any concerns at all, I can point him
in the direction of dozens and dozens who have the same setup with no
problems or ill effects.

By the way... we didnt get home until 4:00am the next morning. Had some
carnage and some creative trail fixes.

Discovered a leak in one of the fuel injectors (93, 4.0l) today. Got an
o-ring kit. Started removing the fuel rail. It has never been taken off
before. I was able to get 3 of the 4 bolts off. The last one I rounded
off pretty good on the first try (soft steel in an aluminum intake
manifold). But that isn't the problem. I have pounded on it and am
letting it sit overnight soaking in WD-40. I'll do the same tomorrow
morning and (hopefully) by tomorrow afternoon some of the oil will get
into the threads.

How in the heck do you disconnect the throttle, cruise control cables?
They look like they snap on to the throttle body, but I'm not sure.

I have probably used a Lockrite in a TJ longer than most. I it installed in
July of 97. I have been very satisfied with it's road manners and off road
performance. It recently broke and I replaced it with a Powertrax "No Slip".
The 4 pins that go between the 2 clutches separated and wedged them selves
in such a way that caused the wheels to locked up tight. I had to remove an
axel in order to drive it. The Lockrite has been causing my wheels to lock
up occasionally for almost a year. I did not know what was causing it until
in completely broke. Powertrax support people said this is common and they
sent a new set of pins to repair it. After I looked at the construction of
the "No Slip", I decided to install it instead of repairing the old
Lockrite. I'm glad I did. The "No Slip" has no pins to break. It is made of
stronger steel. It has more teeth that engage during 4 wheel drive, and as
advertised it is much quieter and has better road manners than the Lockrite.
I got used to the small jerks and clicks with the Lockrite, but the No Slip
has none at all. I have been on several 4+ trails with it and it seems to
work great off road. The install is about the same as a Lockrite. It costs
about $100 more than the Lockrite, but, I think, well worth it.
You didn't say what your friend is running in the rear. I think about
everyone will agree that a rear locker or at least a limited slip should be
in the rear before considering a front locker.
