Well, no one took a camera so here is my report on the trip. There
were 6 Jeeps that showed (3 were no shows, with one late entry). We
got started and found that the little water that accumulated from the
rain gave us a bit of slippery maneuvering. One jeep got a tire
puncture and had to do a change (sorry, I didn't get your name) then
shortly after that Mike C. got a sidewall puncture and had to plug it
since his spare was damaged the night before while extracting the ZJ
from Lower Terminator. I had exhaust troubels by way of backing up
into a rock, which closed off the pipe and pulled it off of the two
rear hangers and bent the right rear shock. We tried to re-hang the
pipe but it didn't stay. A few hang-ups here and there but nothing
major. I had bent the center tie rod that I sleaved and put a pipe
into to reinforce (not enough) on a large rock that I didn't see.
Thanks to Joe Clark for winching it straight again. A few of the
gang headed to see Predator and the rest of us headed back to
civilization at around 10:30am. A quick but eventful trip. Are we
going to continue on to Predator now? I'm in.

These guys are really helpful and based on what I've read pretty good on the price. Swapping to 456 and adding a Powertrax in the back came to $1500. Fortunately there was no backlog so it goes in next Tues.

Thanks for all of the help everyone

Merle,

I would probably approach it not so much as a "good starter", but more like
"I only want to do this once cuz it cost too much to do it twice" approach.
<G>

Is this your Jeep your daily driver? What kind of rear axle do you have in
your YJ? What kind of plans for your YJ are in the future? These are
usually some of the things to consider when making your choice.

I have a Detroit Locker and love it. Other guys like the Lock-Right on
account of it being less expensive to install. An ARB is probably the most
expensive root to go. A few folks have recently had a Powertrax installed
but I don't know enough about them to say one way or the other.

Jeff,

My K5 Blazer did the same thing, then one day the Throwout bering exploded
into little pieces of shrapnel, I had to replace the clutch throwout bering
pressure plate and the input shaft pilot housing...

It ran me about 300.00 for all the parts and took 2 months to complete by my
self..... No one wanted to help pull the tranny and transfer case.. It was
quite a learning experience... In my opinion your throw out bering is
beginning to go and needs replacement soon or you'll be replacing everything
soon...

I'd go for the stainless lines. The biggest advantage being the improved brake response, they don't swell like the rubber ones. This reminds me, I need to swap the one rubber line in the rear sometime.

I have a 93 YJ and have Lock-Rites in both axles, the first went in the rear
and the front followed a couple of years later. Last September I took a trip
to Moab and had a great time, the Lock-Rites worked GREAT, they are
inexpensive, can be installed in your garage/carport and are readily
available. I highly recomend them for your first locker, especially if you
are on a budget. The Dana 35c locker was under $300 and installed in about 1
1/2 hours. Another benefit to Lock-Rites is they don't require any special
additives, I use 85-140 gear oil and have not had any problems or regrets.
These lockers gave me the traction neccesary to run Moab, Upper and Lower
Woodpecker, Upper and Lower Ajax, Upper and Lower Terminator, etc...,
admittedly a strap and hi-lift were needed on occasion but that was due to a
lack of clearance rather then traction, (I have 31x10.50 BFG's).

Subject: Re: Stainless Steel Brake Lines

I copied this info from a JPOR discussion about a year ago. The below comments are not mine but rather a collection of other's.

*******************

SS Brake lines - Pros
1. They don't swell like rubber lines, so they can potentially firm up your brake pedal.
2. If you're doing a lot of off-road driving, the stainless-steel braid may protect your lines from being punctured by rocks or whatever.

SS Brake lines - Concerns
1. When you install them, you must make SURE that they can't kink, twist, or stretch under any combination of wheel droop, bump, or (for the front wheels) steer.
2. The stainless-steel outer braid will cut through anything against which it rubs, so you have to make sure that the lines don't rub back and forth over anything important.

3. Stainless steel lines have been known to fail when dirt gets between the outer braid and the Teflon lining... As the braid moves back and forth, the dirt abrades the Teflon and can make it rupture. If you look at stainless-steel lines on motorcycles, you'll see that many of them are encased in plastic tubing, apparently in an effort to eliminate this problem. The tubing also helps considerably with the abrasion issue mentioned above.

*****************

Nearly all passenger cars are shipped with rubber brake lines, and they hardly ever fail.

*****************

"Stainless-steel" lines are made of Teflon tubing, not rubber. Teflon has a number of advantages over rubber; the chief ones are that it doesn't expand under pressure and it doesn't deteriorate with age. It also resists high temperatures and is chemically inert, so it's compatible with all brake fluids.

However, Teflon is pretty fragile, so it has to be protected from physical damage (chafing, flying rocks, etc.). Although some manufacturers armor their Teflon hoses with Kevlar, most protect the Teflon with an external sheath of braided stainless-steel wire... So that's why armored Teflon hose is usually called "stainless-steel hose".

******************

"We've run braided lines and had them fray, pinch, kink, and come apart before... a few times. For this reason we now offer only the safest DOT longer rubber brake lines for your lifted 4x4" .... RockyRoad Outfitters

******************

Regarding your original question about needing more length.... I have heard that YJ hoses are 3" longer and use the same fittings or you can lower the bracket quite easily.

Good Luck,

Larry

Subject: 1988 XJ -- free to good home

Don't get too excited about this offer -- there is a catch (several of
them actually). It's kinda like the Paul Harvey radio show.......wait until
you hear the rest of the story before you make any offers.

This summer has been an almost complete balls up for me and my family.
We've driven over 10,000 miles, had our property destroyed, our money
stolen, been taken advantage of, and just generally had a sh*tty time (with
a couple of nice exceptions, but far too few).

Anyway, we've almost got our lives back together and are actually thinking
about rejoining the human race. I do however have a couple of things I need
to clean up before I can start my life again:

1. I need to return David O'Boyle's engine hoist. Dave, if you'll send me
your address AGAIN I'll bring it out to you this weekend. Beer and steak
are on me.

2. I need to get rid of this POS XJ that is sitting in my yard. The first
big catch in the deal is that I DO NOT HAVE A TITLE TO THE VEHICLE. This
truck was abandoned by it's previous owners when we kicked them out of our
house. It was being used as daily transportation and as a trail rig (a lot
of you will recognize it) until it threw a rod through the oil pan. Here is
a list of good/bad things about it:

4.0 engine with at least one rod thrown
working auto tranny
working transfer case
good front axle
bad rear axle - spider gears broken and welded into a spool
passenger front window broken out
body in good shape overall
4" ProComp lift kit
31" tires
15x8 black spoke rims
good interior with some wear - drivers seat ripped
power seats and windows
no keys - will have to disconnect the rear driveshaft and break the
steering lock to move it - or pull it straight onto a trailer

I could file for an abandoned title and part the thing out to recoup some of
our losses resulting from our failed attempt to help a family in need, but I
don't have the time or the room in the yard for that. At this point I just
want the POS out of my front yard.

If any of you want to go to the trouble of getting an abandoned title for it
and can bring a trailer to pick it up, you can have it. Otherwise, I'm just
going to drag it out to the side of the street and have the city of Phoenix
red-tag it and tow it away. I can't give it to any junk yards without
having a title for it, so it will end up in a city impound lot. At least it
will be out of my yard.

I have not spoken to this vehicles owners since they abandoned it (and their
dog) at our house on their departure almost a month ago. Considering the
circumstances surrounding our "parting of the ways" I do not expect to ever
hear from them again -- stealing my children's piggy banks kinda put a
damper on the relationship.

If you're interested, you can see a pic of the vehicle here:
http://albums.photopoint.com/j/ViewPhoto?u=41056&a=271409&p=10861910

I'm sure some of you will recognize the vehicle and realize who the owners
are, and even though I now consider them to be the scum of the earth I would
appreciate it if no names were mentioned on the list.

Hey Len,
If anything part the POS out, it looks like it does have some good features.
Buy your kid a new piggybank with interest. I had your problem once. I
ended up leaving the vehicle parked halfway through the abandoners garage
door at 3am...with a gas tank full of foam peanuts. Another option is
parked backwards in front of a fire hydrant or in an emergency zone at the
hospital, karma kicks the previous owner in the butt for that...
Have a better day

Two die when Jeep plunges into lake

By Keith Paul
<keith@l...>
LAS VEGAS SUN

A man and a child were killed early this
morning after their Jeep plummeted down
a 40-foot embankment and submerged
upside down in Lake Mead.

Another child, a 4-year-old boy in the
Jeep, escaped serious injury when he was
thrown from the vehicle.

The driver of the Jeep was reportedly
trying to tow another car that was stuck in
a primitive camping area off Northshore
Road near mile marker 8 in the Lake
Mead National Recreation Area.

The Jeep crashed down the cliff and into
Lake Mead about 12:15 a.m., National
Park Service officials said.

The names of the man driving the Jeep
and the child who died were not released
this morning pending the notification of
their family. The child who survived the
accident was released to the care of the
mother, officials said.

The accident is still under investigation.

What's the trail rating of this run? I'd be interested in going, but I'm in
a stock rig until at least Christmas. Are there bypasses for any tough
parts?

I would rate it at 3-3.5. I have seen a stock 2000 TJ make it, without
any problems. Don't know of any bypasses, but you can always try a
different line. If you have driven on rocks before you should'nt have
a problem, I think this is a great learning trail !

I have two JBL 6X9 3 ways I want to put in my Jeep, I have had no
radio for about a year now, I was wandering if anybody knew of some
good Boxes that would fit without letting them get wet whe It rains,
or should I just make my own.
